South Side Chicago Railroad Yard Thief Arrested By Cook County Sheriff

One man has been arrested in connection with the theft of property from a south suburban railroad yard, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced Monday.
On the afternoon of January 11th Cook County Sheriff’s Detectives responded to a call of a possible theft at the Canadian National rail yard located at the 4700 block of South Merrimac in Chicago. At this time it was learned that three subjects removed railroad ties and other scrap metal from the Canadian National rail yard property, total property value was approximately $100,000. A positive description of the get-a-way vehicle was also provided to the detectives.

Detectives immediately sent out a Critical Reach Bulletin to local area law enforcement agencies with information regarding the incident and offenders and requested that the subjects be taken into custody if contact is made. Sheriff’s Detectives started to check with various scrap metal yards for proceeds of the theft.


On January 12th through investigative techniques, Cook County Sheriff’s Police Detectives located the offender and his vehicle. George Galanos of Hickory Hills was arrested and charged with one count of felony theft and one count of criminal trespass to real property. Additionally, Detectives canvassed local scrap metal yards and located some of the stolen items from the Canadian National rail yard.
On January 14th George Galanos appeared in bond court and was given a $50,000 bond. His next court date is January 18th in Bridgeview.
