THE ILLINOIS ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY AND THE INDIANA
DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT HAVE DECLARED SUNDAY AN AIR
POLLUTION ACTION DAY DUE TO ELEVATED POLLUTION LEVELS. FOR

DUE TO THE EXPECTED ELEVATED POLLUTION LEVELS…PERSONS ARE
ENCOURAGED TO AVOID PROLONGED OUTDOOR EXERTION…PARTICULARLY THOSE WITH PRE-EXISTING RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS.

AN AIR POLLUTION ACTION DAY IS DECLARED WHEN WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE SUCH THAT WIDESPREAD PARTICULATE MATTER – PM2.5 – LEVELS ARE
EXPECTED TO BE ABOVE THE UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS CATEGORY
OF THE AIR QUALITY INDEX. SINCE TODAY MEETS THIS CRITERIA AN AIR
POLLUTION ACTION DAY IS BEING DECLARED.

UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS…ACTIVE CHILDREN AND ADULTS…AND
PEOPLE WITH RESPIRATORY DISEASE…SUCH AS ASTHMA…SHOULD LIMIT
PROLONGED OUTDOOR ACTIVITY.

PARTICIPANTS IN THE…PARTNERS FOR CLEAN AIR PROGRAM…ARE REQUESTED TO INITIATE THEIR ACTIVITIES. AREA RESIDENTS ARE ALSO URGED TO REDUCE POLLUTION LEVELS BY FOLLOWING THE TIPS BELOW.

1. TAKE PUBLIC TRANSIT…RIDESHARE WALK OR BIKE.
2. IF DRIVING CONSOLIDATE ERRANDS AND RUN THEM AFTER 7 PM.
3. SWITCH TO COMPACT FLUORESCENT LIGHT BULBS.
4. SET YOUR THERMOSTAT UP AT LEAST 2 DEGREES.
5. TURN OFF AND UNPLUG ELECTRONICS.
6. USE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY HOUSEHOLD AND CLEANING PRODUCTS.
7. USE A CHARCOAL CHIMNEY OR GAS GRILL INSTEAD OF LIGHTER FLUID.
8. AVOID USING GASOLINE-POWERED EQUIPMENT ON ACTION DAYS.
9. DO NOT BURN LEAVES AND OTHER YARD WASTE.
10. CHECK YOUR LOCAL DAILY AIR QUALITY FORECAST OR SIGN UP TO
RECEIVE YOUR FORECAST VIA EMAIL AT WWW.CLEANTHEAIR.ORG.

The Air Quality Index reached 100 in Chicago and 84 in the north and west suburbs of Chicago. The worst reading in Chicagoland was the Aurora-Elgin reading which topped out at 101, which is the lower limit for the rating of UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS.

The forecast for tomorrow for your area is for AQI levels to be between 101 and 150. Which identifies increased liklihood of respiratory symptoms and breathing discomfort in sensitive groups. Active children and adults, and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor activity.
