Heat: Upper 90’s Afternoon; Children and Pets Should Not Be Left Unattended in Vehicles Under Any Circumstances

HOT AND HUMID WEATHER TO CONTINUE THROUGH WEDNESDAY…

At 10:30 a.m. the temperature at Chicago Executive Airport was 86°F.
The official overnight low at O’Hare International Airport was 75.9°F at 4:51 a.m.

HOT AND HUMID WEATHER WILL CONTINUE TO AFFECT NORTHERN ILLINOIS
AND NORTHWEST INDIANA THROUGH WEDNESDAY. TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO CLIMB INTO THE MID AND UPPER 90S THIS AFTERNOON…AND INTO THE MID 90S AGAIN ON WEDNESDAY. THESE TEMPERATURES…COMBINED WITH DEW POINTS IN THE MIDDLE TO UPPER 60S WILL RESULT IN HEAT INDICES CLIMBING ABOVE 100 DURING THE AFTERNOON HOURS. BECAUSE OF THE SOUTHWESTERLY WIND COMPONENT…THIS DANGEROUS HEAT WILL ALSO
IMPACT AREAS NEAR THE LAKE.

Heat Index is expected to be just over 100 — below the criteria for a HEAT ADVISORY, which is 105.

LITTLE RELIEF IS EXPECTED TONIGHT…AS TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED
TO REMAIN IN THE MID AND UPPER 70S IN MANY AREAS AND ARE LIKELY TO REMAIN AROUND 80 IN THE MORE URBANIZED AREAS OF CHICAGO. COOLER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED BY WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND THURSDAY AS A COLD FRONT MOVES ACROSS THE AREA.

THE COMBINATION OF HEAT AND HUMIDITY WILL CREATE A SITUATION IN
WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE POSSIBLE. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS…STAY
IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED ROOM…STAY OUT OF THE SUN…AND CHECK UP ON RELATIVES AND NEIGHBORS.

CHILDREN AND PETS SHOULD NEVER BE LEFT UNATTENDED IN VEHICLES
UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE DURING HOT
WEATHER WHEN THE CAR INTERIOR CAN REACH DANGEROUSLY HIGH
TEMPERATURES IN A MATTER OF MINUTES!

Watch for severe thunderstorm, which are possible with cooler weather arriving on Wednesday afternoon. Thursday through Saturday may be cooler than normal.
