Police Activity/Surveillance Vernon Hills: Arrests After Armed Robbery at La Tienda del Pueblo

One Suspect Captured Immediately After Fleeing Outside Store, 2 Suspects Captured in Parking Lot, and 2 Captured In Nearby Neighborhood An Hour After Fleeing Out Back Door of La Tienda del Pueblo Grocery

McHenry County deputies, Vernon Hills police and possibly U.S. Marshals and other law officers were watching the five suspects under surveillance as they robbed the La Tienda del Pueblo grocery at 115 E. Townline Road in Vernon Plaza at approximately 8:30 a.m. Thursday.


Two suspects were apparently getaway driver/lookouts and three suspects entered the store. Among the three that entered, one suspect held the store owner to the floor at gunpoint, and two check the store cash register for money.

About the time the store owner’s wife entered the store, law officers intervened and entered the store. The three suspects fled out the back door. One suspect was caught immediately, while the other two escaped into a neighborhood nearby.

The two getaway/lookouts were arrested and a perimeter was setup to apprehend the two at large. Police searched on foot and by police patrol.

LOCKDOWN: Police notified Vernon Hills High School, Stevenson High School, the Hawthorn Elementary School campus and Cook Memorial Public Library District’s Aspen Drive Branch to activate a lockdown. Police used security video images from the Aspen Drive Library to confirm the descriptions of the suspects they had from the robbery. Law officers used the Sullivan Community Center as their command center.

By 9:45 a.m. Thursday all suspects were apprehended. The last suspect was apprehended near the Famous Dave’s Bar-B-Que less than one-half mile west of La Tienda del Pueblo grocery along Townline Road (Route 60).
