Neighborhood flooding just west of Harrah’s Casino. River level was 50.4 feet at Paducah, KY at this time. Metropolis does not have a levee or a floodwall to protect against Ohio River flooding.

Metropolis Mayor Billy McDaniel says flooding along the Ohio River has forced a dozen families to leave their homes and closed down Harrah’s Casino that employs 600 people.

April’s rainfall statistics in 2011, according to Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel broke the old April record of 7.13 inches set back in 1957 with an April 2011 statewide average rainfall of 7.45 inches. Southern Illinois ranged 10 to 20 inches in April 2011. The state’s highest rainfall was 20.01 inches at Anna, Illinois.
