Des Plaines Fire Department responded about 4:45 p.m. Sunday to a three-vehicle crash with at least one person trapped in a vehicle at Northwest Highway and Dempster. The box alarm was also called out with a location of Northwest Highway and Dempster for eight injured accident victims. The injuries were reported to be minor to moderate. Two vehicles rolled over, and at least one vehicle was reported on its side. Des Plaines called for the extra-alarm EMS Box at about 4:50 p.m. Sunday. Fire departments from Elk Grove Township, Mount Prospect, Niles and North Maine assisted on the first alarm.

A call for additional ambulances to the scene was requested at about 5:10 p.m. by Des Plaines Fire Department. Arlington Heights Fire Department, Glenview Fire Department and Park Ridge Fire Department responded into Des Plaines after a second request for additional ambulance. Staging for ambulances was in the parking at the northwest corner of Miner Street (Route 14) and Rand Road.

Victims were transported to Level One Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, Northwest Community Hospital, Glenbrook Hospital, and Resurrection Hospital in Chicago. The last victims to be transported were transported from the scene about 5:45 p.m. Sunday.

A confusing intersection …
The location callouts are confusing because Route 14 is Miner Street east of River Road and west of Rand Road. Route 14 is Dempster east of Rand Road. Even more confusing is the fact that Route 14 is Northwest Highway in Arlington Heights through downtown Des Plaines. But in eastern Des Plaines Northwest Highway is south of Miner/Dempster, but it is NOT Route 14. Going east, Dempster picks up the Route 14 number. Also Rand Road is NOT Route 12 in that area. In summary, two streets change names at the crash intersection. Going southeast Rand Road becomes Northwest Highway. Going east, Miner Street becomes Dempster.

As of February 2010 …
The overhead traffic signal on the southeast corner of the intersection has a sign for Northwest Highway cross-street for east- and westbound traffic.

The overhead traffic signal on the northwest corner of the intersection has a sign for Rand Road cross-street for east- and westbound traffic.

The overhead traffic signal on the southwest corner of the intersection has a sign for Miner Street cross-street for northwest- and southeastbound traffic.

The overhead traffic signal on the northeast corner of the intersection has a sign for Dempster cross-street for northwest- and southeastbound traffic.
