Krzysztof Kaczor, 24, of the 400 block of East Washington St. in Des Plaines was pronounced dead of multiple gunshot wounds at 2:14 a.m. Sunday at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, after he was shot by a Des Plaines Police officer.

Kaczor was shot as he appeared about to strike the police officer with an ax. The police officer ordered Kaczor to drop the axe. When Kaczor did not comply, he was shot multiple times to prevent injury or death in self-defense.

The police officer responsible for the shooting was placed on administrative leave, as a standard procedure. The incident is being investigated by the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force — also a standard procedure.
