Norma Favela, 31, Killed After Being Intentionally Hit in Head with Hammer

THU JUN 04 2009 — Rafael Alvarado, 32, charged with first-degree murder and the intentional homicide of an unborn child in the death Thursday of Norma Favela, 31, who was seven to eight months pregnant.

Norma Favela, who was seven to eight months pregnant was killed early Thursday in the Hanover Park home she shared with boyfriend Rafael Alvarado in the 1700 block of Linden Avenue, Hanover Park. Favela’s daughters, ages 2 and 10, also lived at the home. The 2-year-old was sleeping beside her mother, when the homicide began with Alvarado striking Favela several times in the head.

Alvarado was arrested in Melrose Park Thursday and has admitted the murder on a videotaped statement. Police have recovered the murder weapon and blood-soaked clothing.

Criminal Past
Alvarado was also sentenced to 41 months in federal prison in 2002 for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. He has a significant criminal history that includes convictions for aggravated DUI, driving with a suspended or revoked license and other traffic violations, probation violations and several bond forfeiture warrants in Cook County and Du Page County.
