Hit by Pickup Truck on Elmhurst: Ruthe Stathas Killed Crossing Busy Street

Ruthe Stathas, 83,of Elk Grove Village was struck by a southbound pickup truck on Elmhurst Road about 1:00 p.m. Friday. Ruthe Stathas was crossing in the 2300 block of South Elmhurst Road near Oakton Street — just north of the Route 83 overpass over the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90). She crossed away from a crosswalk in an area where three lanes of traffic were traveling on each side of the road. Two vehicles had stopped for her, but a third vehicle — the pickup truck — was still moving when she crossed into its path.

When Mount Prospect police arrived, they notified responding paramedics they had found a woman with no pulse, who had suffered a head injury. She was pronounced dead at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village at 1:39 p.m.

Elmhurst Road was closed in both directions near Oakton Street and reopened after 4:00 p.m. The area of Oakton and Elmhurst Road borders Mount Prospect and Des Plaines. Des Plaines police also responded to the call and shut down the northbound lanes of Elmhurst Road.
