WED APR 16 2008 — Loud booms and strings of lights two nights in a row over north-central Indiana may have been Air National Guard 122nd Fighter Wing F-16 fighter jets on training missions.

The booms shook houses in the Kokomo area about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday with similar reports Tuesday over Logansport.

Police switchboards in Howard and Tipton counties were flooded with calls from residents who saw bright lights just that preceded a loud sound like a sonic boom Wednesday night. Emergency 9-1-1 dispatchers took 146 phone calls within a 15-minute period between 10:25 p.m. and 10:40 p.m. (The 9-1-1 center usually averages 15 to 20 calls between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.)

The Air National Guard was on training missions during the week, but sonic booms were not reported on the official ANG 122nd log. A police official heard jets after he heard one of the booms.
