The NIU shooter has been identified as Steven P. Kazmierczak, 27, from Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. He carried shotgun in a guitar case as he walked to Cole Hall on the NIU campus. Other guns and ammunition were hidden under a coat. Kazmierczak was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene.

He came through a door on the left side of the stage, and immediately began shooting, according to Don Grady, chief of police of NIU Police Department.

The Daily Herald is reporting that Steven P. Kazmierczak was a 1998 graduate of Elk Grove High School in Elk Grove Village, Illinois.

He is reported to have served as Vice-President of NIU’s Academic Criminal Justice Association. In 2006, the NIU sociology department awarded Kazmierczak one of its highest honors, the Annual Dean’s Award — described as an award for really good students.
