CHICAGO BEARS RADIO -- WBBM Newsradio 780 "Traffic on the 8's"

OVERNIGHT UPDATE: Two suspected snipers shot 12 police officers and one civilian. Additional snipers or accomplices were also suspected overnight. Police were in a standoff/negotiation/shootout with one shooter, who shot and killed himself overnight about 3:30 a.m. on the second floor of El Centro College parking garage near the initial shootings.

In the initial shooting, one DART police officer was killed, and four Dallas Police Department officers were killed. DART is the Dallas Area Rapid Transit.

The DART police officer was identified as Brent Thompson.

In addition to the dead suspect, two men and a woman were taken into custody overnight. The woman was taken into custody near the scene. The two male suspects were seen putting camouflage bag(s) into the back of a black Mercedes and were followed by police until they were stopped at I-35E and Kiest.

Fox 4 News is reporting that a “person of interest” turned himself in after police circulated pictures of him online, and that Dallas police released him shortly after 1:00 a.m.

Dallas Police Chief David O. Brown reported in the middle of the overnight response that he is not confident that all suspects have been accounted for.

Initially two police officers were reported shot shortly before 9:00 p.m. Thursday in Dallas, Texas during a protest over recent shootings of two black males in the past two days in the United States. By 10:10 pm. it was reported up to six police officers were injured. Then it was reported possibly five police officers were gravely wounded in Dallas.

About 10:30 p.m. an official update reported four DART police officers were shot — one was killed, and 3 other police officers were in surgery with apparent non-life-threatening injuries. Immediately following the DART update, Dallas Police reported that a total of 10 police officers were shot. Three total police officers were killed — one DART police officer, and two Dallas Police Department police officers.

An update also reported that snipers shot at police from elevated positions.

The shots — possibly up to 50 shots — were fired near the intersection of Lamar Street and Commerce Street in Dallas, Texas.

Police have confirmed one suspect is down while a second possible suspect is in a downtown Dallas garage — possibly wearing a bulletproof vest and tactical gear. By 10:00 p.m. KDFW Fox affiliate reported police are negotiating with the second suspect.

SWAT officers are on scene and guns have been drawn near the building.

Protests were promptly organized this week after a police-involved shooting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana Tuesday morning and Minneapolis Wednesday evening.
