Fighting Frankenfood: Cities gearing up for intl march against Monsanto.

PROTEST AGAINST GMO FOODS PLANNED FOR SATURDAY OCTOBER 12, 2013
Protesters around the world are preparing to rally against genetically modified food producer Monsanto. Hundreds of cities in over 50 countries are expected to take part in Saturday’s march. The previous international protest last May brought about 2 million people together. The marches are calling for a permanent boycott of genetically modified foods and harmful chemicals. Monsanto is also blamed for polluting the environment and trying to improve its reputation by falsifying safety reports.

Monsanto insists it’s playing a key role in feeding the world’s rapidly growing population. But Jeffrey Smith who has written extensively about the dangers of GM foods, begs to differ. Smith is consumer advocate promoting healthier non-GMO choices, who claims that the Obama administration has a group of Biotech “Yes Men” working to expand the use of dangerious genetically modified food in production. Smith says critical analysis has been replaced by irrational devotion to risky technology.

Taylor was also in charge when the FDA approved Monsanto’s genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (rbGH or rbST). Dairy products from treated cows contain more pus, more antibiotics, more growth hormone, and more IGF-1—a powerful hormone linked to cancer and increased incidence of fraternal twins (see www.YourMilkonDrugs.com.) The growth hormone is banned in most industrialized nations, including Canada, the EU, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. But under Michael Taylor, it was approved in the US, without labeling.

— Jeffrey Smith

Smith reports that the responsibility for this disregard of science and consumer safety lies with the first Bush White House, which had ordered the FDA to promote the biotechnology industry and get GMO foods on the market quickly. To accomplish this White House directive, the FDA created a position for Michael Taylor, as the FDA’s new Deputy Commissioner of Policy. Taylor was formerly the outside attorney for the biotech giant Monsanto, and later became vice president at Monsanato. He had also been the counsel for the International Food Biotechnology Council (IFBC). With IFBC drafted a model of government policy designed to rush GMOs onto the market with no significant regulations.

Whole Food Market has three sales going on this weekend! They’re kicking off this salepalooza with 20% off all Non-GMO Verified products in the store Friday October 11th thru Sunday October 13th. Two other sales will be announced soon.
