Health Care Town Hall: Man Protecting Son with Cerebral Palsy Cites ‘Deadly Doctors’

Mike Sola, man who confronted John Dingell about care for his disabled son, responds to Speaker Pelosi’s remarks that he and others are un-American and disruptive.

Ask Mike Sola, father of a boy with cerebral palsy:
To say that Mike Sola is concerned that upcoming health care bills coming out of congress would be an understatement.

To say the Mike Sola’s behavior and motivation are backed by conservative, right wing or Republican ‘astroturf’ grassroots efforts would be an insult.

Mike Sola explained during a FOXNews segment on his removal by police officers during a town hall meeting with Rep. John Dingell, that he was respectful of the police, and the police were respectful of him when they asked him to leave the meeting. Sola had been shouting down Dingell, especially when Dingell claimed that an amendment to the health care bill would provide adequate care for his son, even with his condition of cerebral palsy.

Dingell, a Michigan Democrat, sponsored the event on President Barack Obama’s health care plans Thursday evening in Romulus, Michigan. Video shows Sola, of Milan, Michigan, exclaiming that the proposed changes in health care would hurt his son, as he wheeled his son in a wheelchair and approached Dingell at the podium.

After the confrontation, Dingell claimed the town hall had been infiltrated by Republicans.

Sola claims his anger came from within … that he just brought his wife and son to the meeting to look out for his son. Mike Sola cited a New York Post editorial by Betsy McCaughey entitled ‘Deadly Doctors: O Advisers Want to Ration Care’ … claiming everyone should read the editorial.

McCaughey claims that at least two of President Obama’s top health advisers should never be trusted with the power to decide what health plans cover, how much leeway your doctor will have, and what seniors will get under Medicare.

(1.) The first is Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, the brother of White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, who has already been appointed to two key positions: health-policy adviser at the Office of Management and Budget and a member of Federal Council on Comparative Effectiveness Research.

Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel bluntly admits that the cuts will not be pain-free. “Vague promises of savings from cutting waste, enhancing prevention and wellness, installing electronic medical records and improving quality are merely ‘lipstick’ cost control, more for show and public relations than for true change,” he wrote last year (Health Affairs Feb. 27, 2008).

Savings, he writes, will require changing how doctors think about their patients: Doctors take the Hippocratic Oath too seriously, “as an imperative to do everything for the patient regardless of the cost or effects on others” (Journal of the American Medical Association, June 18, 2008).

Doctors take the Hippocratic Oath too seriously.

– Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel

That’s what freedom-loving patients with freedom of choice and serious illnesses want their doctors to do — take their cases too seriously. But Emanuel wants doctors to look beyond the needs of their patients and consider social justice, such as whether the money could be better spent on somebody else. McCaughey points out that most doctors achieve social justice one patient at a time.

Emanuel believes that “communitarianism” … that medical care should be reserved for the non-disabled, not given to those “who are irreversibly prevented from being or becoming participating citizens . . . An obvious example is not guaranteeing health services to patients with dementia” (Hastings Center Report, Nov.-Dec. ’96).

Emanuel oddly defends discrimination against older patients: “Unlike allocation by sex or race, allocation by age is not invidious discrimination; every person lives through different life stages rather than being a single age. Even if 25-year-olds receive priority over 65-year-olds, everyone who is 65 years now was previously 25 years” (Lancet, Jan. 31).

(2) Dr. David Blumenthal, the second key Obama adviser mentioned by McCaughey, has long advocated government health-spending controls, though he concedes they’re “associated with longer waits” and “reduced availability of new and expensive treatments and devices” (New England Journal of Medicine, March 8, 2001). But he calls it “debatable” whether the timely care Americans get is worth the cost. (Ask a cancer patient, and you’ll get a different answer. Delay lets cancer spread and lowers your chances of survival.)

No one has leveled with the public about these dangerous views. Nor have most people heard about the arm-twisting, Chicago-style tactics being used to force support.

– Betsy McCaughey

White House, Chicago Style: Cronyism, Twisting Arms and the ‘Golden Circle’
In a Nov. 16, 2008, Health Care Watch column, Emanuel explained how business should be done: “Every favor to a constituency should be linked to support for the health-care reform agenda. If the automakers want a bailout, then they and their suppliers have to agree to support and lobby for the administration’s health-reform effort.”

Mike Sola also claimed that thugs had threatened him at his home in the middle of the night. He replied to the thugs with a threat on the FOXNews segment, saying he is not afraid to go to prison to protect his family. His threat comes within a week after SEIU members in purple shirts were accused of roughing up a vendor on the streets in St. Louis. Kenneth Gladney, 38, a conservative activist from St. Louis, said he was attacked by some of those arrested as he handed out yellow flags with “Don’t tread on me” printed on them. He suffered injuries to his knee, back, elbow, shoulder and face. Gladney, who is black, said one of his attackers, also a black male, used a racial slur (n-word) while asking him why a ‘n—–’ would be doing what he is doing. Then the black male attacked Gladney. Some liberal bloggers are reporting that Gladney is an SEIU member that was attacked.

The week has been filled with accusations by Democrats that the Town Hall meetings are being infiltrated by organized efforts of Republican. Meanwhile, Democrats have proceeded with organized efforts of their own. See the Craigslist searches below …
