3-11 Alarm Fire Culminates Busy Overnight for Chicago Fire Department

An early morning fire broke out at about 5:30 a.m. at Holy Name Cathedral at 735 North State Street with fire reported through the roof by 5:50 a.m. The fire was seated in the cockloft or attic — a space above automatic sprinklers where recent roof work was ongoing. A 2-11 extra alarm was requested at about 6:00 a.m. and a 3-11 extra alarm was called at about 6:50 a.m. At the height of the fire fighting operations, fire was showing through the roof from three locations. Firefighters are being commended for an excellent stop of a fire that had the potential to be devastating for the Catholic church. The fire, which was fought in near zero temperatures with 14 mph winds (Weather Underground: 2/4/2009), was declared under control about 7:30 a.m. Firefighters are remaining on the scene to check for hot spots throughout the cockloft.

The sanctuary is reported in good shape, except for water damage near the altar and five water-soaked cardinal hats worn by previous cardinals. The roof will require replacement.

Cardinal Francis George was notified at about 6:00 a.m. and was allowed to enter the Holy Name Cathedral at about 8:00 a.m.

Chicago Fire Department Busy Overnight
A busy night for Chicago started about 5:30 p.m. when Chicago Fire Departments had a working fire in an apartment building at 6310 South Fairfield on the first and second floors.

Next, Chicago Fire Department firefighters fought a smokey fire involving a propane tank at a large paper factory warehouse of the Continental Paper Grading Company at 1623 South Lumber. Firefighters arrived on the scene about 5:45 p.m. and reported the fire out by 6:30 p.m.

Then firefighters arrived at 6845 Peoria confirming fire showing upon arrival of fire equipment at about 6:50 p.m.

At 7:05 p.m. Chicago Fire Department was fighting a basement fire at 5739 W Byron.

About 7:10 p.m. Chicago Fire Department was called to put out a stove fire in a warehouse at Lake and Kostner.
