Public information officers (PIOs) are the communications coordinators or spokespersons of certain governmental organizations (i.e. police/ andfire departments, city, county, school district, state government, etc.).
The primary responsibility of a PIO is to provide information to the public and media as necessary and to meet the legal requirements.
PIOs often use Twitter or Facebook accounts for alerts for public safety emergencies, updates. Media briefing and news conference locations, dates and times are often announced via Twitter by PIOs.
Public Safety Information officers are identified by the initials “PIO” emblazoned on helmets or vests.
