Howard Street is a major east-west street in the Chicago metropolitan area, located near the north border of the City of Chicago. The eastern terminus is at Eastlake Terrace. The roadway continues as a lane in a private apartment/condo parking lot just north of Howard Beach Park. Howard Street runs intermittently from the shoreline of Lake Michigan west to Elk Grove Village at Ridge. At Paulina Street, Howard Street is the location of the Howard CTA Station, which is the northern terminus of the Red Line. The Howard Street Station is about 2,400 feet from the Lake Michigan shoreline.
The CTA Purple Line continues north serving Evanston and Wilmette. The Purple Line ends at the Linden Station, 349 Linden Avenue, Wilmette — about a 4 mile trip. As the crow flies, Linden lines up with Gregory Street just south of Prospect High School in Mount Prospect (about 13.3 miles away) and Gregory Street in Arlington Heights.
The CTA Yellow Line continues west serving Skokie. The Yellow Line ends at the Dempster-Skokie station in the block of 8700 Terminal Avenue, just south of Dempster Street — about a 5 mile trip.
Howard street is located at 7600 N in Chicago’s address system, and between Paulina Street and Kedzie Avenue, is the border between the City of Chicago and the City of Evanston. The Chicago community areas at this border are Rogers Park and West Ridge.
Howard Street runs intermittently through several north and northwestern suburbs continuing and terminating near O’Hare International Airport.
Howard Street is interrupted by the Edens Expressway in Skokie.
On the way west, Howard Street becomes Sibley Street at the intersection with Merrill Street in northwest suburban Park Ridge.
At the Des Plaines River and Algonquin Woods, Sibley Street is interrupted, and Howard Avenue continues west in Des Plaines west of the Des Plaines River.
Howard Avenue is interrupted west of Mt Prospect Road by Interstate 90 in Des Plaines.
Howard Street begins again in an industrial park just east of Route 83 (Busse Road) in Elk Grove. Continuing west, Howard Street is interrupted again just west of Bonnie Lane.
Howard Street begins again just east of Woodview Avenue in Elk Grove Village, and continues west.
Howard Street terminates (west) at Ridge Avenue and Appleseed Park in Elk Grove Village — just east of Arlington Heights Road and Busse Woods.
