Two Firefighters Killed in 5-Alarm Fire at Warehouse at Front and York Street, Philadelphia

Philadelphia firefighters responded about 3:13 a.m. Monday to a large warehouse fire at Jasper Street and York Street in Kensington. The fire response was elevated to a 5-Alarm fire as the fire spread to neighboring businesses and homes.

“It is with deep regret that the Fire Commissioner Ayers announces the death of Lt. Robert Neary and FF Daniel Sweeney, both from Ladder 10, who were killed in the line of duty. Lt Neary and FF Sweeney died on Box 361 Front and York Sts, which was dispatched at 0313 hrs on April 9th, 2012.”

The fire was declared under control about 5:21 a.m. but firefighters were at an adjacent furniture warehouse when a wall collapse and trapped five firefighters at about 5:50 a.m. One firefighter freed himself. Ladder 10 Lt. Robert Neary, 59, died at the scene. Firefighter Daniel Sweeney, 25, died at Temple University Hospital.

The two other firefighters were seriously injured. Francis Chaney and Pat Nally, who was stabilized after requiring CPR.

Fire Radio Audio: Firefighters originally responded to a rubbish fire at Jasper and York, and reported a six-story building (60 feet by one city block) with heavy fire showing from the first and second floor.
