Huge Salaries Revealed: Citizen Outrage Forces Bell, California Officials to Resign

Three administrators whose huge salaries sparked outrage in this small blue-collar suburb of Los Angeles have agreed to resign, the City Council said Friday.

The city manager of Bell, California this year was paid about twice the salary of President Barack Obama. City Manager Robert Rizzo was earning $787,637 annually, which is twice as much as President Barack Obama. Police Chief Randy Adams was earning $457,000 annually, which is double the pay of LAPD Chief Charlie Beck. Assistant City Manager Angela Spaccia was earning $376,288 annually.

Residents packed city hall for the meeting as tempers flared. They booed the city council and chanted, “Recall!”

Robert Rizzo, Police Chief Randy Adams and Assistant City Manager Angela Spaccia are still likely to get millions from their pensions during their retirement years.

Bell, California is a working-class city of 37,000 people with a median income is $40,000 per year. In 2010, about 17 percent of Bell’s residents live in poverty. More than half of the population is immigrant.
