Police, firefighters, and paramedics from Palatine, and Illinois State Police troopers responded about 6:11 p.m. Monday, June 8, 2026 to a report of a suspicious person in the area of Euclid Avenue and Route 53 and Twin Lakes at 1200 Twin Lakes Drive in Palatine. Initially, Illinois State Police, beginning about 5:35 p.m. had been looking for a male/black who was reported to be walking in lanes on Route 53 near Algonquin Road.
The suspicious pedestrian was located by Illinois State Police walking northbound in the southbound lanes of Route 53 near Northwest Highway. He was described as a male/black wearing pajama bottoms and carrying a bat or a large piece wood, or a long piece of metal. He may have hit a vehicle with the object he was carrying on Route 53 before police located him.
Next, Palatine police officers discovered the suspicious male off of Route 53 in the area of Twin Lakes.
The male jumped into either Lake Irene or Doughnut Lake (not specified) about 6:17 p.m., and began to swim a significant distance toward the middle of the lake. He went under water about 6:21 p.m. Illinois State Police troopers went in the lake to attempt to rescue, but deferred the rescue to Palatine Fire Department because the male remained under water and not visible.
A MABAS Dive Box was activated for a dive rescue or recovery. Additionally, several Illinois State Police troopers were checked out by paramedics at the scene.
The male was recovered from the water by fire department divers at about 6:49 p.m., and paramedics immediately began CPR. The male was transported by Palatine Fire Department paramedics to Northwest Community Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
