Lake County Sheriff’s Marine Unit Deputies and Antioch firefighters and paramedics responded about 3:10 p.m. Saturday, August 19, 2023, to the north side of Petite Lake to a report of a boat crash with injuries.
Lake County Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located a damaged Yamaha Wave Runner, which struck a Hurricane Deck Boat. The operator of the Yamaha, a 53-year-old man of Crystal Lake, had already been transported by a Good Samaritan to the north shore of Petite Lake near the block of 39300 North Lake Court in unincorporated Antioch.
The operator of the Yamaha was transported via ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with serious injuries. The operator of the deck boat was uninjured.
Preliminary investigation shows the deck boat, being operated by a 53-year-old man of Volo, was traveling southbound out of the Long Channel, entering Petite Lake. The Yamaha was traveling westbound across Petite Lake and struck the front of the deck boat. The operator of the Yamaha was thrown from the watercraft, facedown into the water, however he was wearing a lifejacket. He was initially unconscious in the water, but was quickly removed by the Good Samaritan.
It appears alcohol was a factor for the operator of the Yamaha Wave Runner, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit and criminal charges are possible.
