There have been more shootings in Chicago in 2021 from January 1 to the end of the Labor Day Weekend than the entire year in 2019, according to Chicago Sun-Times’ Sophie Sherry. There have been more than 3,100 shooting victims in 2021, according to the city’s most recent data reported September 7, 2021. The shooting stats for 2021 are up 9% from the 2,849 shooting victims recorded to this time period in 2020, and are up 69% from the 1,838 victims compared year-to-date in 2019. The number for all of 2019 was 2,664. Chicago’s 2021 shooting stats have already overtaken 2019 by 436 shootings.
As of Monday, September 6, 2021, homicide were recorded at 535, which is 10 more than year-to-date for 2020.
At least 16 children, age 15 and younger, have been shot and killed this year, which is three times the rate recorded in 2020.
The worst recent year for gun violence in Chicago was 2016, when there were more than 4,300 shooting victims and more than 762 murders, which was recorded as the highest death toll since the mid-1990s.
