Chicago Police responded about 12:30 p.m. Friday, October 23, 2020 to a ShotSpotter alert indicating multiple shots fired in the block of 2600 South Hamlin Avenue.
UPDATE: The male shot by police died at Mount Sinai Hospital Friday afternoon.
Upon arrival to the area Chicago police officers attempted to “curb a suspicious vehicle” but the driver fled and crashed into a light pole near an alley in the block of 3700 West 26th Street. Two males adults and a female adult fled the vehicle. At least one of the male subjects was seen armed with a gun.
Police said they fired multiple shots at an armed offender, and the armed offender was struck in the buttocks. He was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition. Police said the woman is still at large. The status of the second mail was initially unknown.
A second weapon was recovered in the vehicle that crashed into the pole.
Police also said that a man believed to be from the original ShotSpotter call on Hamlin Avenue suffered a graze wound to the head, and was transported to an nearby hospital.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the police-involved shooting. The police officer who fired his weapon was placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days.
No police officers were struck by gunfire, but they were transported to a hospital for observation. Initially, it was unknown whether the armed offender had fired any shots at the police.
