The heat and fire weakened the steel of the bridge support system of ‘The Maze’ at Interstate 580 and Interstate 880 [MAP/SAT] and caused the bridge to collapse and obstruct traffic that connects Oakland and San Francisco via the Oakland Bay Bridge.

The tanker fire was first reported to the California Highway Patrol at 3:45 a.m. on Sunday. The driver of the tanker walked about a mile and hailed a cab to take him to the hospital. The overpass began to sag at 4:02 a.m.
