Carlos, 7, and his six-year-old sister were hiding in a locked bathroom when Carlos called 9-1-1. The three offenders fled when they learned that the 9-1-1 call had already been placed. Carlos had already given the 9-1-1 operator detailed information about the home invasion. “Bring some cops … and ambulance … and all of them … and bring soldier, too (elapsed time 0:41)”

When three armed robbers found Carlos hiding in the bathroom with his sister, the offenders asked him who he was talking to on the phone. In the 9-1-1 audio you can hear the men enter the bathroom. The 9-1-1 operator is heard relaying the information that the robbers broke into the bathroom to the other dispatcher that was in contact with responding police units.

Nobody was injured in the home invasion. The suspects were not captured.

After initiating a traffic stop that turned into a vehicle pursuit, Cook County Sheriff’s deputies on northbound Hicks Road near Lake Cook Road had at least two suspects bail out of the vehicle. A foot pursuit continued in an area of woods just after 1100 p.m. Wednesday. One of the suspects, who bailed out of their vehicle, was carrying a shotgun and wearing all red. A second suspect was wearing a black hoodie and jeans. Palatine Police Department and Lake County Sheriff’s deputies immediately assisted with the pursuit. Police lost sight of the suspects and called in a police helicopter for aerial searching.

Buffalo Grove police assisted with a wide perimeter border that was located near Arlington Heights Road and Checker. Police announced three suspects in custody at about 1:15 a.m. Thursday.

The traffic stop is possibly gang related. Cook County Sheriff’s deputies were on a surveillance operation at the Country Glen apartments in unincorporated Arlington Heights. Police were on alert for a gang fight that might be initiated in the neighborhood. The vehicle pursuit headed to the Lake Cook Road and Hick Road area– where the suspects bailed out and fled on foot.

The suspect with the shotgun was caught immediately. A bloodhound tracked a second suspect to the location where he was hiding. The third suspect was stuck in mud in a marshy area, and spotted by a Cook County Sheriff/Chicago Police Department helicopter.

Fire in the 4800 block of South Paulina starts out looking as a routine fire. But notice the increasingly dark smoke early in the video (at :45) that becomes lighter again (at about 1:20). At about 3:00 minutes and later the smoke over the front door (to the right of the ladder) is possibly pulsating.

Less than a minute after a firefighter ventilates a top story window (3:46 elapsed time), a large backdraft engulfs the house (4:12 elapsed time). Four firefighters suffered facial burns. One of the firefighters spent more than a week at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Three of the injured firefighters were standing near the front door. The rush of flames blew out the front door. The fourth injured firefighter was hit by flames while he was on a ladder. The biggest risk of harmful or fatal injury is when a person inhales the hot air. An injured airway can swell and block air to the lungs.

A backdraft is a situation which can occur when a fire is starved of oxygen; consequently combustion ceases but the fuel gases and smoke remain at high temperature. If oxygen is re-introduced to the fire, by opening a door to a closed room, combustion can restart often resulting in an explosive effect as the gases heat and expand like a blast or explosion. Ventilating a roof or an upper window helps the gases escape upward and helps the heat escape upward.

Characteristic signs of a backdraft situation include yellow or brown smoke, smoke which exits small holes in puffs (a sort of breathing effect) and is often found around the edges of doors and windows, and windows which appear brown or black when viewed from the exterior. These darker colors are caused by incomplete combustion. If the room contains a lot of soot, it indicates that the room lacks enough oxygen to permit combustion. Firefighters often look to see if there is soot on the inside of windows and in cracks around in the room. The window might have cracked because of the heat. The windows of the structure may also have a slight vibration due to the pressure differentials. The surrounding environment (e.g. the hallway outside the suspected backdraft room) will be extremely hot.

A flashover is similar to a backdraft, but does not involve the introduction of oxygen to an oxygen-starved fire area as a cause of the increased combustion. A flashover is the near simultaneous ignition of all combustible material in an enclosed area. When certain materials are heated they undergo thermal decomposition and release flammable gases. Flashover occurs when the majority of surfaces in a space are heated to the autoignition temperature of the flammable gases. Flashover normally occurs at 500 °C (930 °F) or 1,100°F for ordinary combustibles, and an incident heat flux at floor level of 1.8 Btu/ft²*s (20 kW/m²).

An example of flashover is what happens after a piece of furniture starts to burn in a domestic room. The fire involving the initial piece of furniture can produce a layer of hot smoke which spreads across the ceiling in the room. The hot buoyant smoke layer grows in depth (downward), as it is bounded by the walls of the room. The radiated heat from this layer heats the surfaces of the combustible materials (other non-burning furniture, toys clothing) in the room, causing them to give off flammable gases via pyrolysis or material decomposition caused by high temperature. When the surface temperatures become high enough, these gases ignite (at a flashpoint temperature) and the entire room becomes engulfed in flames. Autoignition is also known as kindling point, and is defined as the temperature at which a material will spontaneously ignite in a normal atmosphere without the initiation of a spark or flame.

‘Lucas’ played by Corey Haim with the Grace Gym scoreboard on the west wall toward the foyer.

Haim’s major break in acting was in 1986, billed as the main star alongside Kerri Green, Charlie Sheen, and Winona Ryder in the popular movie Lucas. Haim would receive a nomination for an Exceptional Performance by a Young Actor Starring in a Feature Film – Comedy or Drama at the Young Artist Awards for his role as the title character. Film critic Roger Ebert gave Haim good reviews.

Lucas filmed the summer immediately following the controversial closing of Arlington High School in 1984. The Arlington High School library was converted to a cafeteria for the film. Other school scenes, including the football field, were shot at Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn, Illinois and Arlington High School in Arlington Heights, as were many of the scenes outside of the high school. The pep rally scene early in the film was shot in the Grace Gym and Grace Gym foyer of Arlington High School. Other scenes for Lucas were filmed at various locations throughout Chicagoland.

Charlie Sheen as ‘Cappie’ on stage at Grace Gymnasium for the Pep Rally — an early scene of the film ‘Lucas’.

The title character, Lucas Bly (Corey Haim), is an extremely intelligent, if nerdy 14-year-old high school student. He becomes acquainted with Maggie (Kerri Green), a pretty older girl who has just moved to town. After meeting Lucas on one of his entomological quests while she is playing tennis, Maggie befriends him, spending time with him during the remainder of the summer. When school begins Lucas, who finds himself a frequent victim of bullying and teasing, has a protector of sorts —Cappie (Charlie Sheen), a fellow student and football player. Cappie was once one of Lucas’ tormentors, until Cappie contracted hepatitis and Lucas brought him his homework every day, ensuring that he didn’t fail his school work.

Wynona Ryder in the Grace Gym foyer which is now painted blue for Christian Liberty Academy.

Rina (Winona Ryder, in her first feature film role), Lucas’ best female friend, encounters him as he sits by a lake, looking across the lake at the dance festivities. Even though she has obvious feelings for him, Rina consoles Lucas as he frets about him and Maggie being “from two different worlds”. He witnesses Cappie and Maggie’s first kiss from across a lake.

The next day Lucas joins the football team in desperation, and the rest of the movie is about his determination.

Roger Ebert gave the film 4 out of 4 stars, calling it a film “about teenagers who are looking how to be good with each other, to care, and not simply to be filled with egotism, lust and selfishness, which is all most Hollywood movies think teenagers can experience”. Ebert later included the film in his top 10 films of 1986.

By the late 1990’s, Haim’s career was in trouble. After starring in several other films and a TV series, he filed for bankruptcy in 1997. In 2007, he told ABC’s “Nightline” that drugs hurt his career: “I feel like with myself I ruined myself to the point where I wasn’t functional enough to work for anybody, even myself. I wasn’t working,”

Toyota Instructional Video: Stopping Procedure for sticking accelerator pedal .

Overall, Toyota has recalled more than 8 million cars and trucks worldwide because gas pedals and floor mats that can cause the accelerator to become stuck.

Toyota Emergency Stopping Procedure Transcript:
Although it is a rare occurrence, your Toyota may experience a sticky accelerator pedal. You should pay attention to the operation of your accelerator pedal. If the accelerator pedal is hard to press than normal or slower to return, it may be a precursor to a stuck pedal. These vehicles should be parked and a dealer immediately notified.

OK, what should you do if your accelerator pedal sticks?
Although it is a rare occurrence, we thought you should know what steps you should take in the unlikely event that it did occur.

If your pedal sticks and won’t return to its original position when you take your foot of it, step on the brake with both feet — using firm and steady pressure. Don’t pump the brake pedal, as it will deplete the effectiveness of the brakes. Then simply shift into NEUTRAL — that’s ‘N’ for neutral. And firmly apply the brakes to make a ontrolled stop on the side of the road.

If your Toyota’s transmission has a notched shift gate, and you’re driving in sport mode, step on the brake with both feet using firm and steady pressure. Simply nudge the shifter to the right into DRIVE — ‘D’ … then forward into NEUTRAL ‘N’ and firmly apply the brakes to make a controlled stop on the side of the road in a safe area and shut off the engine.

Drivers who cannot put the vehicle into NEUTRAL should turn the engine off. This will not cause a loss of steering or braking control, but the power-assisted systems will be lost.

If the vehicle has an ENGINE START STOP button, firmly push the button down for at least THREE seconds to turn off the engine. DO NOT tap the START STOP button. If the vehicle has a conventional key ignition, turn the key to the ACCESSORY position or ACC to turn off the engine. But DO NOT remove the key from the ignition as this will lock the steering wheel.

If you experience any issues with your accelerator pedal, please contact your dealer without delay.

If you’re not experiencing any issues with your pedal, Toyota is confident that yor vehicle is safe to drive.

Thank you.
