Wednesday September March 17, 2010 was the day to turn out for a St. Patrick’s Day parade through the streets of New York, wearing green, waving at bands.

Little is known of Patrick’s early life, though it is known that he was born in Roman Britain in the fifth century, into a wealthy Romano-British family. His father and grandfather were deacons in the Church. At the age of sixteen, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken captive to Ireland as a slave. It is believed he was held somewhere on the west coast of Ireland, possibly Mayo, but the exact location is unknown. According to his Confession, he was told by God in a dream to flee from captivity to the coast, where he would board a ship and return to Britain. Upon returning, he quickly joined the Church in Auxerre in Gaul and studied to be a priest.

In 432, he again says that he was called back to Ireland, though as a bishop, to save the Irish, and indeed he was successful at this, focusing on converting royalty and aristocracy as well as the poor. Irish folklore tells that one of his teaching methods included using the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) to the Irish people. After nearly thirty years of teaching and spreading God’s Word he died on 17 March 461, and was buried at Downpatrick, so tradition says. Although there were other more successful missions to Ireland from Rome, Patrick endured as the principal champion of Irish Christianity and is held in esteem in the Irish Church.

Originally the colour associated with Saint Patrick was blue. However, over the years the colour green and its association with Saint Patrick’s day grew. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn in celebration of St Patrick’s Day as early as the 17th century. He is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pre-Christian Irish, and the wearing and display of shamrocks and shamrock-inspired designs have become a ubiquitous feature of the day. Then in the 1798 rebellion in hopes of making a political statement Irish soldiers wore full green uniforms on 17 March in hopes of catching attention with their unusual fashion gimmick. The phrase “the wearing of the green”, meaning to wear a shamrock on one’s clothing, derives from the song of the same name.

Chevy Suburban fully involved car fire showing arrival of Gary Fire Department, and a head-on crash involving a gaper with moderate damage at 5:05 elapsed time.

A fully involved vehicle fire in a large SUV occurred at 20th and Chase in Gary, Indiana (date unknown possibly September 2009). While firefighters were wrapping up, a head-on collision at moderate speeds occurred down the street (you can hear the crash at 5:05 elapsed time). No injuries at either incident.

Many people worry about huge car explosions, such as they see on television or movies, but the biggest risk at a car fire is probably getting hit by another vehicle in a second incident caused by human error of drivers distracted by the first incident. Another risk of car fires is getting hit by an exploding air bag canister. Air bags usually detonate during fully involved vehicle fires. The canister can go airborne like a missile and fly out the back window of the vehicle — landing up to about 50 feet directly behind the rear of a vehicle. The canister is sharp and made of metal, so impact with the human body could cause serious injury or death. Notice the videographer doesn’t stand directly behind the SUV. Firefighters face other hazards in newer vehicles — namely hybrids energized by electricity.

Video is by Edward Malik, a photographer and videographer from the south Chicago suburbs and Gary, Indiana area.

Apart from the scareware files themselves, many malware that aid rogue anti-virus programs in attacking computers are grouped into the fake-alert Trojan family. Prior to the first quarter in 2009, the number of fake alerts discovered were under 100,000 per quarter. About 250,000 newly discovered fake alerts were reported in Quarter One 2009, about 350,000 new fake alerts were reported in Quarter Two 2009, and over 600,000 new fake alerts were reported in Quarter Three 2009. Quarter Four 2009 and the current quarter in 2010 are about 350,000.
