Tonight’s Moon is a Supermoon, but it also has the distinction of having one of the slightest eclipses of all — a Penumbral Lunar Eclipse. You might notice a slight darkness on the face of the Moon at peak about 11:11 p.m. Central Daylight Time. the Penumbral Lunar Eclipse is given actually May 25, 2013 in Universal Time (0415 UT).

Two Bike Thefts on East Anderson Dr, Palatine

Palatine police received a report about 5:49 PM Friday of a two bike thefts in the block of 900 East Anderson Drive Palatine, IL. Police received a report that an unknown offender or offenders took two bicycles.

Bike #1 was a silver and green 26-inch mountain bike, and bike #2 was an orange mountain bike.

The crime is reported to have occurred between 5:20 p.m. and 5:50 p.m.

“Flags In” Memorial Day Flags Placed at Arlington

Continuing a 40 year tradition, the 3rd U.S. Infantry placed flags at the grave markers of those buried in Arlington National Cemetery ahead of Memorial Day. The practice is known as, “flags in.”

Each year for the past 40 years, the 3rd U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard) has honored America’s fallen heroes by placing American flags before the gravestones and niches of service members buried at both Arlington National Cemetery and the U.S. Soldier’s and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery just prior to Memorial Day weekend.

Skagit County I-5 Bridge Collapse: 3 Rescued from Skagit River

Dan Sligh, injured in the collapse of a bridge near Seattle, Washington, describes what it was like when the bridge collapsed.

Three people were rescued about 7:00 p.m. Thursday May 23, 2013 after a bridge collapsed into the Skagit River in western Washington and dropped vehicles and people into the water.

The Skagit River Bridge had a federal sufficiency rating of 59.8 at a 2010 inspection. The number is figured base on a combination of structural soundness and traffic-carrying ability.

The Skagit bridge was rated “structurally deficient” in 1992 and functionally obsolete in 2000 and 2010, according to a report by uglybridges.com, which cites the National Bridge Inventory data for that year. There was erosion on the stream banks below, and serious road-deck damage or wear. By 1994, the National Bridge Inventory federal database listed the bridge as “functionally obsolete,” an improved rating but an indication the bridge still wasn’t adequate for modern traffic.

Clinically Dead Mom from Missouri City, TX Is Revived After Baby Delivered by C-Section

A pregnant high school teacher gives birth while technically dead, and is then revived by doctors.

Last February, Erica Nigrelli, 32, was teaching at a high school in Missouri City, Texas, when she walked over to a co-worker’s classroom because she wasn’t feeling well. When she felt faint, she put her hands on a table in the classroom, but passed out and had a seizure.

Nathan Nigrelli, her husband who happened to a teacher in a nearby classroom, rushed to her side, as three teachers started CPR and deployed an Automated External Defibrillator. When paramedics arrived, Erica had no pulse; she was in cardiac arrest. She was rushed into surgery for an emergency cesarean section — technically a postmortem delivery. But is didn’t remain defined as a postmortem delivery because after the delivery, Erica’s heart started beating again.

Erica remained in a medically induced coma diagnosed with hypertophic cardiomyopathy — a thickening of heart muscle that puts extra workload on the heart. Erica didn’t see her baby Elayna until three weeks after childbirth.

Both area healthy now.

Bell Elementary School Warns of Kidnapping Attempt of 4th Grade Boy Near Oakley Ave and Grace St

Chicago police received a report that a man attempted to abduct a fourth-grade boy at Bell Elementary School, 3730 North Oakley Avenue in the North Center neighborhood of Chicago.

A middle aged black male approached the boy in the playground at Bell Elementary School about 3:20 p.m. Wednesday May 22, 2013. The man said he was supposed to pick up the boy because his mother was at home sleeping. The child was able to run away and return safely to his mother. The offender was last seen walking westbound on Grace Street.

The full description of the offender was a male/black, 45-55 year-old 5’6″ thin build, brown eyes with short hair and a dark complexion. He was wearing blue jeans, a stained black T-shirt, flip-flop sandals and a blue Chicago Cubs baseball cap.

Vehicle Burglary at Cooper’s Hawk On West Algonquin Rd, Arlington Heights

Arlington Heights police received a report about 8:52 AM Friday of a vehicle burglary at Cooper’s Hawk, 798 West Algonquin Road Arlington Heights, IL. Police received a report that an unknown offender or offenders burglarized a Mercedes compact luxury crossover SUV.

Offender(s) shattered the front passenger side window on a black 2013 Mercedes GLK 350 and removed a red Coach purse which was left under the front passenger seat. The damage to the widow is estimated at $500. The red Coach purse, which was valued at $400, contained a Kate Spade wallet ($200), Kate Spade sunglasses ($200), Marc Jacob sunglasses ($200), Coach make-up bag ($100), black Apple iPad 2 ($699), approximately $300 cash, checkbook, I.D., credit/debit cards and keys. A credit card obatain from the vehicle burglary was used at a gas station in Maywood, IL.

The crime is reported to have occurred on Tuesday May 21, 2013 between 8:35 p.m.-9:50 p.m.

Teen Cleans Out Cash Register at Cleaners on West Golf Rd, Schaumburg

Schaumburg police responded about 9:10 AM Friday to a theft at Countryside Cleaners, 1761 West Golf Road Schaumburg, IL. Police received a report that a teen-aged male/black subject took all the money out of the cash register and fled from the cleaners storefront.

The owner was at the back of the store when the incident occurred.

The offender is described as a male/black with short hair, teen-aged, wearing a gray shirt and dark jeans. He fled on a black bicycle. He was last seen heading eastbound on Golf Road toward an apartment complex.

The incident was captured on video.

Theft of Wallet at Panera Bread, Arlington Heights

Arlington Heights police received a report about 8:35 AM Friday of a wallet theft at Panera Bread, 5 West Rand Road Arlington Heights, IL. Police received a report that an unknown offender or offenders removed a Vera Bradley wallet valued at $68 from a purse which was placed on a window ledge behind the victim. The wallet contained several credit/debit cards, a driver’s license and approximately $80 cash.

The crime is reported to have occurred on Thursday May 23, 2013 at 2:30 p.m.

Truck-Train Crash: Semi-Trailer Gets Clipped By Canadian National Freight Train On Northwest Highway In Barrington

VIDEO: Aftermath of truck vs. train crash at Canadian National crossing on Northwest Highway just west of North Avenue in Barrington, Illinois.

Barrington police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 6:00 PM Thursday to a train vs truck crash on the Canadian National railroad, just west Northwest Highway and North Avenue, Barrington, IL. Apparently a westbound semi-trailer truck became stuck in traffic and didn’t clear the track. The rear end of the trailer was hit and dragged in the direction of the southbound freight train. The cab or tractor of the truck was pushed into at least three vehicles that were also stuck in westbound traffic. Possibly two people in those vehicles were injured. Crews in rescue ambulances from Palatine-Rural Fire Protection District and Rolling Meadows Fire Department assisted Barrington firefighter/paramedics.

BARRINGTON TRAIN VS TRUCK CRASH PHOTOS …

The crash caused major traffic problems for the evening rush hour. Northwest Highway was blocked in both directions between Lake Cook Road and Route 59. Westbound Lake Cook Road was backed up at least to Ela Road. Metra trains, running on totally different perpendicular tracks, were slowed for safety precautions.

The freight train also blocked Lake Zurich Road and Cuba Road. The tail end of the train was just north of Cuba Road by the Cuba Marsh. The locomotives were stopped about 150 yards southwest of the crash site. There was no word on any derailment, railroad personnel were inspecting the tracks and the train cars.

The semi-trailer was transporting items, but there were no hazardous materials reported.

An Accident Investigation Team was investigating the crash site past 8:30 p.m. Cook County Sheriff was also on the scene. Barrington Hills police assisted with traffic.

The train cleared the scene about 10:00 p.m. which means that Lake Zurich Road and Cuba Road should be open. Investigators, railroad personnel, and towing and recovery personnel remained at the scene past 10:00 p.m.

Arlington Heights police received a report about 8:31 AM Wednesday of a theft at the Citgo gas station, 1650 West Algonquin Road Arlington Heights, IL. Police received a report that an offender removed two cartons of cigarettes valued at $220 while the employees were restocking shelves. The theft was discovered when video was checked after the inventory was short two cartons.

The crime is reported to have occurred Wednesday May 22, 2013 at 8:30 a.m.

The offender was described as a male/black wearing a green shirt, blue jeans and a white baseball cap with a Chargers logo.

Theft at Arlington Lakes Golf Course Locker Room on South New Wilke Rd, Arlington Heights

Arlington Heights police received a report about 6:01 PM Tuesday of a theft at the men’s locker room at Arlington Lakes Golf Course, 1211 South New Wilke Rd Arlington Heights, IL. Police received a report that an unknown offender or offenders stole a black wallet and a black rosary case which were on a bench in the men’s locker room. The wallet contained a retired police badge, I.D. and approximately $200 cash. The rosary case contained a white gold wedding ring valued at $200.

Buffalo Grove police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 11:07 AM Thursday to incidents related to a large power outage in the area of Dundee and Arlington Heights Road Buffalo Grove, IL. Police received a report of traffic signals off or disrupted along Dundee Road at Arlington Heights Road and at Weidner Road.

Police dropped Stop Signs at traffic signals, and firefighters responded to a stuck elevator between floors at 3350 North Carriageway.

Husham Hussain, 30, Killed in Motorcycle Crash through a Fence Near Rand Road and Wilke Road, Palatine

Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 8:09 PM Wednesday to a report of motorcycle crash with injuries at Rand Road and Frontage Road Palatine, IL. Husham Hussain, 30, of the 200 block of North Wilke Road in Palatine, has been identified as the victim in a crash involving a motorcycle near Rand Road and Wilke Road in Palatine.

Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that a motorcycle crashed through a fence and into a backyard of a residence on the southwest corner of Rand Road and Frontage Road.

First responders on the scene immediately discovered a male victim unconscious at the scene. Husham Hussain was transported to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead about 10:35 p.m. Wednesday.

Police were possibly investigating a car involved in the crash, and were not sure if Husham Hussain was riding the motorcycle or was inside the car.

Cook County Sheriff’s police initially responded to the crash, but jurisdiction was determined to belong to Palatine Police Department. Palatine police were on the scene investigating the accident until at least midnight. Some roadways were blocked. Police blocked northbound Frontage Road at Victoria Drive in Palatine.

Fraudulent Savings And Checking Accounts Set Up By Arlington Heights TCF Bank Supervisor; Two Men Make Unlawful Withdrawals

Jovanny D. Sosa, 21, of Hanover Park has been charged with misappropriating property from a TCF Bank in Arlington Heights where he was employed.

Cook County prosecutors say Jovanny Sosa set up four fraudulent savings and checking accounts at a Wood Dale TCF branch.

Sosa then accessed the accounts from the Arlington Heights branch where he worked as a supervisor. Allegedly, Sosa electronically deposited $2,000 into each account.

According to prosecutors, Benjamin Andrade, 20, and Antonio Rodriguez, 21, both of Hanover Park, then went to ATMs and withdrew $500 from each account, resulting in fraudulent loss of funds from TCF totaling $2,000.

A Cook County judge set bail at $10,000 Monday for Jovanny D. Sosa, of the 5700 block of Ring Court in Hanover Park.

If convicted of the class 3 felony, Jovanny Sosa faces two to five years in prison with probation available.

Andrade and Rodriguez appeared in Rolling Meadows bond court on Tuesday afternoon charged with misappropriating property from a financial institution, unlawful use of a credit or debit card and theft.

Bail was set at $10,000 each for Andrade and Rodriguez. The defendants could face up to five years in prison if convicted of the most serious charges with probation available.

The defendants do not have any criminal history. All are scheduled for their next court appearance on June 6, 2013.
