Video shows a slow moving streak moving from right to left in the camera’s view. Speculation is that the object was the re-entry of a spent rocket stage from a Russian Soyuz-2 that was involved in the launch of three astronauts to the International Space Station Friday. Others speculate that the sighting was a meteor.

Video from unidentified image captured by camera aboard a CBS affiliate KCBS helicopter on the evening of November 8, 2010.

An unidentified contrail captured on video November 9, 2010 is remarkably similar to an unidentified contrail captured on video last New Year’s Eve. Some experts are saying the incident is actually a jetliner flying from Hawaii toward the United States. Early news reports said the unidentified object was not a threat to the United States because it was heading West. Witnesses that captured the New Year’s Eve event are adamant that the object was not an airplane. The videographer in that case followed the object and could no longer find it — causing him to exclude the conjecture that the object was an aircraft that was flying eastbound and passing overhead.

A missile? A UFO? Or a routine commercial jetliner with a contrail. Then what flight number? And why aren’t other jetliners producing at least some other scale of contrail display?

The Defense Department released a statement early Wednesday after saying that the sighting was an airplane, not a missile, that left a mysterious vapor trail off the coast of Southern California.

Very bright contrail lit up the sky about 35 miles west of California north of Catalina Island. NORAD official says missile posed no threat to homeland.

Spokesmen for the United States Navy, Air Force, Defense Department and North American Aerospace Defense Command said they were looking into a video posted on the CBS News website that appears to show a rocket or some other object shooting up into the sky and leaving a large contrail over the Pacific Ocean. The incident was captured by a camera aboard a CBS affiliate KCBS helicopter.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, issued a statement jointly with the U.S. Northern Command, or NORTHCOM, saying that the contrail was not the result of a foreign military launching a missile. It provided no further details.

Officials had no information to make them suspect that the action was taken by any U.S. adversary.

So far the FAA says that no radar picked up any fast-moving objects in the area — even after replaying recorded radar images of the area at the time of the sighting.

“A strange blue object in the sky” reported on a YouTube channel from the user’s hometown of Centreville, VA last Wednesday night after it was recorded on a Sprint HTC EVO 4G phone.

The object was filmed near Lee Highway where it was spotted and moved irratically around the sky for nearly 10 minutes. Bryan Fains, who captured the image, said this ‘was no plane from nearby Dulles Airport.’ The Fains added that the object was silent and didn’t move like any aircraft I’ve ever seen before. He said that he and nearby residents are used to the type of air traffic that flies in the area, and have seen and heard it all — but not a flying blue light.

Video of floating unidentified lights appeared just after the fireworks near west park at Napersville’s Ribfest.

Accounts of four floating lights floating in Naperville in July 2010 are recalled after recent sightings of floating lights in Manhattan and El Paso, Texas. Witnesses saw four yellow-orange lights at low altitude. The lights changed rates of speed at will without any sound. The YouTube publisher reported that dozens to hundreds of others witnessed the same thing.

We saw them too. The fireworks had just ended in Knoch Park in Naperville and we were headed south in a large crowd of people. Suddenly everyone was stopping in the street and looking up into the sky…we looked up too and saw 4 orange shapes. They did not make any noise and were headed north/northeast. I also saw an airplane…but these were not airplanes. What were they?

- xThunderC Comment on YouTube responding to video above

Some might say that the lights were slow-burning and floating embers from the fireworks fragments. Changing speed may have been due to air currents. Skeptical but curious.

‘Strange and mysterious’ over El Paso, Texas Friday night. One pattern resembled a triangle pattern seen in New York about a week ago.

One witness in Manhattan saw fifty star-like object cluster and spread apart.

Keep in mind, anytime you see three lights that aren’t in a straight line, there is going to be a triangle pattern.

‘Strange and mysterious’ over El Paso, Texas Friday night. One pattern resembled a triangle seen in New York about a week ago.

One falling light seems to divide into three before a fourth mysteriously appears. All of the lights then hover and disappear.

Amigo Airsho Executive Director Terrie Todd identified the spectacle as a performance by the U.S. Army’s precision parachute team… the Golden Knights. Terrie Todd says that each Knight had attached canisters with flares on their feet to generate light while diving through El Paso’s skies as part of a synchronized stunt.

But what about Manhattan?
Report from myfoxny.com on October 13, 2010: Citizens at 23rd and 8th street in New York halted to look in the sky. For over two hours people stood dumbfounded.

Someone claimed a school released a bunch of balloons.

One witness saw fifty starlike object cluster and spread apart.

News Channel 9 in El Paso shows a triangular pattern of lights that looked similar when displayed side-by-side as a day version and a night. Coincidence?

Balloons?

Air show maneuvers?

An FAA spokesperson near New York says nothing was seen on radar.

Video of recent release claiming to be evidence of the November 7, 2006 UFO sighting near O’Hare.

On November 7, 2006 about 4:30 p.m. ground crew radio chatter at O’Hare International Airport started reporting that an object was hovering right above gate C-17 (See excellent witness account here … ‘The November 7 O’Hare UFO Sighting‘). The UFO appeared to be hovering right below the ceiling of the cloud cover (about 700 or 800 feet). The cloud ceiling that day was 1900 feet. The top of the craft was clearly outlined as a very dark gray material, but the bottom and the edges of the craft were reported to be hazy … like when you see the mirage-like surface of the road on a hot day. Witnesses reported that the diameter of the UFO was estimated to be about 30 feet or 10 meters.

OFFICIAL O’HARE WEATHER REPORTS at time of UFO sighting at 4:30 pm …
3:51 PM	53.1 °F	48.0 °F	83%	29.81 in	4.0 miles	West	8.1 mph -	N/A Haze
4:51 PM	53.1 °F	48.0 °F	83%	29.81 in	5.0 miles	SW	4.6 mph -	N/A Haze
5:51 PM	53.1 °F	48.0 °F	83%	29.81 in	5.0 miles	West	8.1 mph -	N/A Haze

On March 21, 2009 a video was released with the source claiming to have a cell phone video of a cigar-shaped UFO “well over 100 meters in length.” The video shows a dark disk or cigar-shaped UFO with a jet (MD-80) that appears to be taking off in the background (the source claims the jet flew under the UFO). The size report from the latest source is in serious conflict with the report from witnesses the day of the incident. It is unlikely that there was a second UFO that would have been missed by the previously-known witnesses. A magnitude of 30 feet and “100 meters” is a big, big difference.

The sky in the background appears to show cumulus clouds in the lower two-thirds of the frame and blue sky in the upper third of the frame. That sky is in conflict with witness accounts and official weather data (overcast and mostly cloudy, ceiling 1900 feet, not broken). Also the amount of light in the sky is too bright for a day in the first week of November at 4:30 p.m. in Chicago. Sunset was at 4:38 p.m. on November 7, 2006. With only about 10 minutes before sunset of a low, Winter sun on a cloudy day in Chicago, the image would probably be a lot darker. It is possible the phone affected the appearance of the lighting, but that is doubtful.

Except for the jet on takeoff, there are no distinguishing landmarks that could associate the video with the O’Hare location.

The audio is also suspect. November 7, 2009 at 4:30 p.m. was rush hour on a Wednesday in Chicago — near O’Hare. There are no sounds of passing cars, freight trucks or any jets taking off or landing. That area is a bustle of energy at that time of day.

This latest account, even though there is video, is not as credible as the accounts from witnesses reporting immediately after the event.

SUN FEB 15 2009 — Eddie Garcia, a news videographer, captured the image of a fireball at the Austin Marathon, and the FAA received “numerous” calls reporting a fireball descending in the sky from people on the ground from Dallas, Texas, south to Austin, Texas. Also, the Texas Department of Public Safety received calls from citizens from Dallas to Houston reporting sonic booms about 11 a.m. The marathon course was located just west of the University of Texas-Austin.

Last week, the Russian and U.S. space agencies reported that two satellites, one Russian and one American (Motorola Iridium), collided about 496 miles (800 kilometers) above Siberia, Russia.

According to U.S. Strategic Command, the satellites collided at 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) per second, producing 500 to 600 pieces of space debris. The speed of 6.2 miles per second is 22,320 miles per hour.

Late Sunday and early morning reports are circulating that the debris from the satellite crash is not related to the Austin, Texas sighting. “There is no correlation between the debris from that collision and those reports of re-entry,” said Maj. Regina Winchester, with STRATCOM.

WED APR 16 2008 — Loud booms and strings of lights two nights in a row over north-central Indiana may have been Air National Guard 122nd Fighter Wing F-16 fighter jets on training missions.

The booms shook houses in the Kokomo area about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday with similar reports Tuesday over Logansport.

Police switchboards in Howard and Tipton counties were flooded with calls from residents who saw bright lights just that preceded a loud sound like a sonic boom Wednesday night. Emergency 9-1-1 dispatchers took 146 phone calls within a 15-minute period between 10:25 p.m. and 10:40 p.m. (The 9-1-1 center usually averages 15 to 20 calls between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.)

The Air National Guard was on training missions during the week, but sonic booms were not reported on the official ANG 122nd log. A police official heard jets after he heard one of the booms.

Arlington Heights firefighters were awakened for an unusual alarm at about 3 a.m. Friday. Several clear, frozen objects or debris hit the manufacturing plant of Weber Marking Systems, 711 West Algonquin Road in Arlington Heights, Illinois [MAP/SAT]. Weber Marking Systems world headquarters is located near the plant. No one was near the incident site and no one was injured.

The Arlington Heights Police department and the FAA are investigating the incident. Nobody is saying whether or not the objects are suspected of coming from an aircraft. Blue ice — frozen wastewater — from an aircraft has been ruled out, but icy sources from other water supplies on an aircraft have not been ruled out. The building is in flight paths to and from O’Hare International Airport, which is less than six miles away. The force of the objects — about four inches diameter — was enough to create a two by four-foot hole in the roof and bring the objects through the roof.

Weber Marking Systems is located in at least 16 other countries and designs and produces label printers, labels, such as compact disc labels, and RFID smart labels (radio frequency identification labels).

People are glad other people saw it, so they know they are not crazy.

JAN 08 2008 (Stephenville, Texas) Several dozen residents reports UFO sightings at different times. One viewer describes a very large object (mile wide craft that moved silently and very low over the terrain) hovering over a forest, about 300 feet in the air. The story is backed up by a pilot and a constable: they report the same type of sighting [MAP/SAT].

Lake Travis is a reservoir on the Colorado River northwest of the city of Austin.

Some residents say they saw fighter jets chasing the UFO.

Military says it had no planes in the area and that the sightings were probably just sightings of a large airliner.

“That’s what they always say, remember?”

The object hit the ground, leaving a 30m (98ft) wide and 6m (20ft) deep crater and released fetid, noxious gases.

People who visited the crater site then experienced headaches, eye problems, irritated skin, irritated throats, irritated nasal passages, nausea and vomiting.

The toxins sulphur and arsenic could possibly have been released from the reaction of the meteor with the ground. It is also possible that methane-rich organic matter from a small lake that may or may not have been caused by a meteor may have caused symptoms. A team of scientist has been summoned to investigate if the site does involve a meteorite.

The appearance of the lights started just after 10:30 pm, when the lights were seen hovering slowly over the town and three of them formed a triangular shape with a fourth light positioned just to the right. A brighter fifth light cruised in from the right at a high rate of speed and decelerated and held a position further to the right of the other four lights.

… incidents have been on the increase recently. There are reports at the moment coming in from all over the country.

… many reports of people seeing quite large unidentified objects in the skies.

The MoD (www.mod.uk):

The MoD does not have any expertise or role in respect of UFOs or flying saucer matters or to the question of the existence of extra terrestrial life forms, about which we remain totally open minded.

I should add that to date the MoD knows of no evidence which substantiates the existence of these alleged phenomena. The MoD examines any reports of unidentified flying objects it receives solely to establish whether what was seen might have some defence significance.

Namely whether there is any evidence that the UK air space might have been compromised by hostile or unauthorized foreign military activity.

Unless there is evidence of a potential threat to the United Kingdom from an external military source, and to date no UFO report has revealed such evidence, we do not attempt to identify the precise nature of each sighting reported to us.

We believe that rational explanations such as aircraft lights or natural phenomena could be found for them if resources were diverted for this purpose but its not the function of the MoD to provide this kind of aerial identification service.

Birmingham Air Space

Official Responses:

British Earth Aerial Mystery Society (BEAMS)

… inundated with similar calls from across the country … rare for such phenomena to be witnessed by so many people.

… had not heard of any unusual activity showing up on the radar.

Arlington Heights is only about four miles from O’Hare International Airport — one of the world’s busiest airports. Therefore, a lot of aircraft fly in the skies over Arlington Heights — where the southern border is only about four miles away from the airport. When a report comes out that a strange craft hovered over one of the terminals at the busy airport, you can be sure a lot of people would like details.

He brought to the airwaves a telephone interview of a witness of the November 7, 2006 UFO sighting over O’Hare International. The witness is a taxi mechanic who moves aircraft from gate to gate or to the hangars for maintenance. He reported the following.

On November 7, 2006 about 4:30 p.m. ground crew radio chatter started reporting that an object was hovering right above gate C-17.

The craft appeared to be hovering right below the ceiling of the cloud cover (about 700 or 800 feet). The cloud ceiling that day was 1900 feet. The top of the craft was clearly outlined as a very dark gray material, but the bottom and the edges of the craft were hazy like when you see the mirage-like surface of the road on a hot day. The other interesting observation was that after the craft accelerated straight up (observed by other witnesses), there was a hole punched in the clouds. The hole in the clouds was about the same size as the unidentified craft. If looked like a cookie cutter hole stamped out of dough ‘very similar in size’ to the craft. The hole stayed for a little while and then dissipated into the overcast clouds. The sighting lasted about 20 minutes from the time of the first radio call to the time when the mechanic and witness parked the Boeing 777 that he was taxiing across the airport.

No lights were observed on the craft. The craft was estimated to be about 20 or 30 feet in diameter by the witness. The craft was not reported by radar according to the witness. On the west side of the airport there is a radar that is designed to detect aircraft in the air. There is also a radar for ground traffic.

The witness stated that he believed that the guy that was working ATC (air traffic control) handling inbound ground had to have seen the UFO, but didn’t say anything. The witness said that the guys in the tower are a ‘different breed’ (not in a negative way) because of the responsibilities that they have. The witness said that ‘it’s just a shame that more people won’t talk about what they see and what they’ve experienced, rather they seem to go to the lowest common denominator of people to try to debunk — you know — what is out there. This was O’Hare … I know a lot of people saw this.”

The witness also said that “they (the tower personnel) have communications equipment in the tower at O’Hare to where they can talk to whoever they need to on the military level instantly. And they have a very special computer in there … tied in to the ability to track aerial objects.” The witness thought that the personnel in the tower may have supervision that prohibits them from reporting publicly what they saw. He hopes “more people will not be afraid to come out and say ‘hey … you know what? I saw …’ ” The witness also said the he felt very privileged to see what he saw that day.

The person interviewed is one of the people who submitted one of the two reports published on NUFOC.org. He submitted the 11/21/2006 16:08 report on the November 7 incident.

In the radio show conclusion, the talk show hosts clarified that the location of the UFO was in Class B airspace. No craft is supposed to be there without a transponder. They speculated that this was something from another planet and if it was a military craft, why would it be flying right over O’Hare airspace?

About twelve people reported seeing the UFO, including pilots, mechanics, ramp personnel and a manager who ran out of his office in Concourse B to see the object after hearing the chatter on a United Airlines private radio frequency.

United Airlines spokespeople are denying the report. In a Chicago Tribune article by Jon Hilkevitch, Megan McCarthy was quoted saying “There’s nothing in the duty manager log, which is used to report unusual incidents.” But one United pilot says he even opened a windscreen in the cockpit to get a better view of the object as he was taxiing his aircraft. All witnesses wanted to remain anonymous and were advised by United officials to refrain from speaking about what they saw.

Chicago Tribune reporter Jon Hilkevitch also claimed that the FAA backtracked on their original statement that they had no information on the object, after the newspaper filed a Freedom of Information Act request. An internal review of air-traffic communications tapes in compliance with the Freedom of Information Act request found a call by a United supervisor to an FAA manager in the airport tower.

Nevertheless, FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory made the following summary statement: “Our theory on this is that it was a weather phenomenon,” she said. “That night was a perfect atmospheric condition in terms of low [cloud] ceiling and a lot of airport lights. When the lights shine up into the clouds, sometimes you can see funny things. That’s our take on it.”

Sunset at Chicago O’Hare on November 7, 2006 was 4:38 p.m. — not dark enough, even with overcast, for lights to be playing any tricks on witnesses. Winds were from the
west at about 5 to 9 miles per hour (Weather Conditions and Sunrise/Sunset Data for 11/07/2006 from Weather Underground).

The National UFO Reporting Center keeps a list of UFO sightings reported on NUFORC.org. The NUFORC.org Illinois listing has reports for the O’Hare sighting and other sightings in the area on other days.
