The new snow overnight and throughout the day is light and fluffy/dry. Snow on radar looks diminished. Lake-effect snow has not picked up.

Accumulations expected … as is typically the case with lake effect
snow… additional accumulations will likely vary greatly over
very short distances. Snowfall rates of greater than one to two
inches per hour are likely with the heavier snow showers… which
could locally add an additional 3 to 6 inches of accumulation
overnight into Friday morning… with isolated heavier totals not
out of the question. Storm total snowfall by midday Friday will
likely range from 6 inches away from the lake… to locally over
a foot near Lake Michigan.

Barrington Hills, Cary Area Hit with 6-8 inches

Arlington Heights Snowfall (Sunday 3-29-2009 at 6:30 am): 3 inches

Three inches of snow on the ground at 6:30 a.m. Sunday. The snow was forecast to start after midnight. It held off until after 3:00 a.m. with an occasional roll of thunder on a cold, rainy night. Then the late-March surprise began with rain changing to heavy, wet snow in gusty winds.

Sunday forecast (more at Arlingtoncards.com/weather) …
By the end of the day Sunday, Arlington Heights may get up to 5 inches of snow.
Snow is expected to end before 9am. High temperature is forecast at 39°F. Breezy, with a north northwest wind between 20 and 25 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Current Conditions …
Heavy, wet snow.
Air Temperature 33°F
Humidity:	92 %
Wind Speed:	N 17 G 24 MPH
Barometer:	29.36″ (994.6 mb)
Dewpoint:	31 °F (-1 °C)
Wind Chill:	22 °F (-6 °C)
Visibility:	1.25 mi.

The weather radar image at 6:30 a.m. shows a good amount of coverage for most of northern Illinois., so forecast for snowfall continuing to at least 9 a.m. seems plausible.

When is the latest snowfall record in Chicago?
Latest snowfall (.2 inch) has been reported on May 11th, 1966. Some areas of the Chicago metro area reported 2 inches of snow from strong easterly winds. The latest official snowfall greater than one inch occurred May 1 and May 2, 1940 when 2.2 inches of total snowfall occurred.

Arlington Heights snowfall was an icy mix/pellet snow of about 7/8 of an inch.

Numerous accidents reported in the northwest suburban area: Rand and Dundee (Palatine), Arlington Heights Road and Miner (with injuries), Golf Road and Meier, Palatine and Kennicott (5-car accident), Arlington Heights Road and Checker (Buffalo Grove), Aptakistic and Weiland (Buffalo Grove), Aptakistic and Buffalo Grove Road (with injuries in Buffalo Grove), Golf Road and Robert Drive (Mount Prospect), Lake Cook and Schaefer, Thompson Boulevard and Buffalo Grove Road (two accidents, one with injuries in Buffalo Grove), Buffalo Grove Road and Dundee (with injuries in Buffalo Grove).

An accident at Rand and Hintz started as a hit-and-run with witnesses at Crave bar, but the missing vehicle returned to the scene.

Two accidents at Milwaukee and Aptakistic (Buffalo Grove/Lincolnshire) — intersection was closed as sheet of ice persisted until salt crews could manage the road conditions.

UPDATE: Morning rush also affected by snowfall last night. Icy precipitation followed by temperatures in the teens overnight brought slick roads and black ice to the morning rush.

Accidents reported in numerous locations Thursday morning: Palatine and Kennicott, Davis and Arthur, Euclid and Wilke, Arlington Heights Road and Palatine Road, Rand Road just west of Arlington Heights Road (three accidents — one involving a Wheeling Township vehicle), Rand and Kennicott, Rand and Wilke, Rand and Dryden, Rand and Woods (three cars, two in a ditch), Lake Cook and Schaefer (two accidents), Lake Cook west of Arlington Heights Road (with injuries), and Dundee and Kennicott (with injuries).

Buffalo Grove had serious icing problems along Deerfield Road, especially near Milwaukee Avenue where numerous accidents were reported at the intersection and along Deerfield Road. Buffalo Grove Police also shut down eastbound Dundee Road at Weidner Road for a prolonged period about 8:30 a.m.
