Storms are heading to the Mid-Atlantic Thursday morning, after dropping rain overnight from Wisconsin to Ohio. However, the storm is not as strong as was forecast.

At least two tornadoes touched down in Northern Iowa, as a massive storm pushes from the Upper Midwest towards the Mid-Atlantic states. Emergency Management officials say at least two businesses and a home were completely destroyed.

Com Ed reported 34,078 customers without power, including 31,033 customers in the southern suburbs.

Indiana Michigan Power reported more than 2,200 Indiana customers without power. Most of those customers were in Allen County and St. Joseph County.

Storms from yesterday’s thunderstorm streak reached Pennsylvania and Ohio this morning, but no tornados were reported there — but severe thunderstorms damaged homes, trees and utility poles.

TODAY
Mostly sunny, with a high near 72. North wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
Tonight Mostly clear, with a low around 53. North northeast wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph. Those warm 72°F will only be around from about 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Friday
Sunny, with a high near 72. Northeast wind 5 to 10 mph.

Friday Night
A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2am. Partly cloudy, with a low around 55. East northeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 10 mph.

Saturday
Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 8am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 79. South wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Severe Weather Disintegrates North of I-90, Continues To Pound Chicagoland’s Southern Counties http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/06/severe-weather-disintegrates-north-of-i-90-continues-to-pound-chicagolands-southern-counties/ http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/06/severe-weather-disintegrates-north-of-i-90-continues-to-pound-chicagolands-southern-counties/#comments Thu, 13 Jun 2013 02:17:36 +0000 Cardinal News http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/?p=63630
An unusually massive line of storms packing hail, lightning and tree-toppling winds Wednesday could affect more than one in five Americans as it rolls from Iowa to Maryland. AP’s Seth Borenstein shows the path of the storm and who is at risk after this evening’s hit on Chicago.

Looks like most of the tornado activity was south and west of Chicago. No major damage in the northwest suburbs, except small tree limbs and branches that fell in Arlington Heights and Mount Prospect. Damaging, severe weather was avoided, and the real problem with the storms in the northwest suburbs had to do with timing rather than intensity. The storm hit in the middle of the evening rush hour.

Trains on the Metra Northwest Line were delayed or stopped with some people having trouble making it to the Blackhawks game. Inbound Train #654 was 49 minutes behind schedule.

In Schaumburg, Remington Road and National Parkway was impassable from flooding. Also westbound Golf Road at Salem Drive was down to one lane with excess water on the roadway. Schaumburg Road was down to one lane in each direction between Lanbert and Summit Drive from excess water on the roadway. Most roadways were back open by 5:00 p.m.

In Lemont, firefighters responded about 6:00 p.m. Tuesday to extinguish a house fire after an apparent lightning strike in the 16400 block of Alba.

Storms dissipated north of I-90 about 5:00 p.m. A lake breeze (easterly breeze) may have destroyed these storms north of I-90. At 9:15 p.m. Chicago Executive Airport recorded 66°F while Midway International Airport reported 71.6°F.

Com Ed reported 34,078 customers without power, including 31,033 customers in the southern suburbs.

Indiana Michigan Power reported more than 2,200 Indiana customers without power. Most of those customers were in Allen County and St. Joseph County.

The three tornado researchers were among nine people killed in storms that struck Oklahoma on Friday night. The tornado also tossed a Weather Channel GMC Yukon, slightly injuring its crew (See The Cardinal VIDEO: Weather Channel Mike Bettes and Crew Rollover Crash in Clash with El Reno, Oklahoma Tornado).

Tony Laubach here… it is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to share this news… on Friday, May 31, Tim Samaras, his son, Paul Samaras, and Carl Young lost their lives in the El Reno, OK tornado. This is a devastating loss to the meteorological, research, and storm chasing communities. I ask that you keep the families in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time. There is some comfort in knowing these men passed on doing what they loved… Your support means the world. Thank you.

The Weather Channel’s tornado hunt team took a direct hit from the tornado west of Oklahoma City. The team was chasing the storm near El Reno, Okla., when the storm picked up the SUV and threw it about 200 yards. Fortunately, the team survived, but they do have minor injuries. Meteorologist Mike Bettes said the airbags deployed and everyone had their seatbelts on: “I saw my life flash before my eyes.” The team also reported seeing other vehicles thrown by the storm. Oklahoma Highway Patrol says motorists have been hurt by the storm, and some others are missing.

A video of the Oklahoma tornado near El Reno, captured by Greg Johnson. We were on this storm from birth, watching as it rapidly turned into a wedge and we got a little too close. Everyone on the team is fine with some minor damage done to “Flash” the Tornado Hunter truck (See also TornadoHunter.com).

MULTI-VORTEX TORNADO VIDEO: On May 31, 2013, storm chasers Dave Demko and Heidi Farrar documented a large multi-vortex tornado southwest of El Reno, Oklahoma. The tornado eventually morphed into a violent wedge as it made a hard turn toward the northeast, where it impacted areas along Interstate 40 between El Reno and Yukon, and later continued causing damage as it moved into the southern Oklahoma City metro area.

Incredible birth of the violent El Reno wedge tornado. As the tornado touched down, it produced a rare display of suction vortices. The whole story will be featured on the upcoming 2013 season of Tornado Chasers on http://tvnweather.com/ondemand.

The Oklahoma City suburb of Moore was just devastated by an EF-5 on May 20, 2013 and now this! Kathryn Piotrowski filmed the tornado from their chase vehicle, and captured stunning footage of a double vortex tornado at one point.

“We’re gonna die” video: Brett and Brandon got extremely close to a violent tornadic circulation that produced multiple tornadoes in very close range… The team was hit by inflow jet winds into the tornado and their vehicle received damage as a barn was completely destroyed. A hay bale came barreling across the road and was tossed into their car.. The team is very fortunate to live to chase another day… Incredible storm chaser traffic prevented an escape from the tornado like normal.. There have been fatalities with this tornado.. The team’s thoughts go out to those affected!

Later Sullivan reported that the tornado went from heading due east to making a right turn and heading in a southwesterly direction.

Most of Northern Illinois except for northern tier counties (Lake, McHenry, etc) are under a Flash Flood Watch.

At about 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, heavy thunderstorms, indicated by radar [LIVE RADAR] are on the move east-northeast at about Interstate 80 — covering the western half of Illinois from Starved Rock to the Mississippi River.

Another area of more severe storms are on the move in Iowa, and seem to be training in Iowa — also moving east-northeast on a more northerly track.

The most severe weather in Chicagoland could be along a path including Naperville, Wheaton, Schaumburg, Elmhurst, and Oak Lawn; but it is too early to tell, and the system could move north as a warm front moves north.

The air is very humid with dew point readings in the upper 60s and some 70s. Thunderstorm cells are expected to develop overnight and may involve heavy rain up to 2 inches per hour, and if thunderstorm cell training occurs, some areas may get 5 inches of rain.
