PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Police and firefighter/paramedics responded to a car vs. tree crash with the car fully involved with fire about 2:20 a.m. Sunday. The driver crawled from the car as the car ignited and before it became fully-involve with fire. Bystanders encouraged the driver to crawl further from the car when they feared the car would explode. The male driver crawled about 30 yards north of the car.

Arlington Heights police, Buffalo Grove police and Long Grove Fire Protection District firefighter/paramedics arrived first to find a victim lying in the parkway about 30 yards north of the car. Witnesses said he appeared to have a head injury.

Long Grove Fire Protection District firefighter/paramedics transported the victim to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. Long Grove firefighters also extinguished the car fire within minutes. Buffalo Grove firefighter/paramedics also responded. After investigation, the fire jurisdiction was determined to be Arlington Heights.

The fire was so intense that firefighters could not determine whether there were any additional victims in the car until the fire was extinguished. Firefighters also repeatedly asked the victim if he was alone in the car.

Accident investigators were on the scene several hours.

A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-700 from Denver slid off the left edge of the end of Runway 13 Center at Midway International Airport around 1:35 p.m. Tuesday. The aircraft rested in the grass about 150 feet from a wall near 63rd Street and Cicero Avenue. The nose of the aircraft was aimed at a White Castle drive-thru.

The two-engine jetliner, Flight 1919 from Denver, was carrying 134 passengers, including five babies, and five crew members, according to airline officials. No injuries were reported.

Runway 13 Center, was apparently covered with an unknown depth of water. The runway is the longest runway at Midway International Airport at 6,522 feet long.

Chicago Breaking News Southwest passenger: ‘That pilot saved us’

Area of Midway where Southwest jet ended up in the grass near Cicero and 63rd Street. The runway marking shows 31C, which is the same physical runway as 13C. When the aircraft land northwest to southeast, as Flight 1919 did, the runway is referred to as 13C. When aircraft land in the opposite direction, from southeast to northwest, the runway is referred to as Runway 31C. The opposite end of the runway, near Central Avenue and 55th Street, shows the 13C marking.

Both airports are located a little closer to Lake Michigan, which tends to keep overnight lows a little warmer during cold months in Chicago. However, in warm months, the proximity to Lake Michigan might bring lower recorded overnight lows. That’s because the specific heat of water is higher compared to most other substances, such as soil and concrete. Specific heat is a scientific term describing the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of a substance one degree Celsius.

By the Lake during Spring? Chicago’s lakeshore is relatively warmer at night, but cooler during the day in Spring. Because of the specific heat of water, it takes longer for Lake Michigan to absorb heat (get warmer) compared to surrounding inland soil and air when considering daytime temperatures or Spring temperatures. It also takes lake water longer to cool below 32°F when inland temperatures are plummeting at night. That’s why it’s normally a little warmer near the lake at night in Spring. Inland temperatures can rise faster than lake shore temperatures on warm Spring days, so daytime temperatures near the lake are usually cooler than daytime inland air temperatures. If the wind is blowing from the east and carrying the cooled lake air further inland, then lake effect temperatures will stay cool further inland. The difference between Highland Park and Rockford can be as much as 10°F or more — with Rockford heating up faster during the day, while Lake Michigan keeps Highland Park cooler.

Here’s something a little frustrating for people who love warm temperatures in the Spring — the onshore breeze. When air on land heats up more than the air over the lake, the warmer air molecules inland rise because the air is less dense. The denser air over the lake then becomes more pressurized compared to the air over land, and the cooler lake air moves inland or creates an onshore breeze. Onshore breezes are common and more noticeable during warm May mornings in the Chicago area. May mornings often start out sunny and warm, but the onshore breeze that develops from the heated land air brings in cooler air and eventually the area clouds up and gets cooler by afternoon.

By the Lake during Fall? Because of the specific heat of water, it takes longer for Lake Michigan to lose heat (get colder) compared to surrounding inland soil and air when considering overnight temperatures or Fall temperatures. The Lake and lakeshore experiences relatively warmer temperatures at night and warmer air during the day if the atmosphere brings in cold air temperatures. If cold air invades the area, temperatures near the lake will be a little slower to drop.

In summary, whatever temperature direction the atmospheric air temperature is headed, the lake water and air temperature near the lake is going to be slower to respond. That means it tends to be a little warmer at night near Lake Michigan, and a little cooler near Lake Michigan during the day. On a grander scale, it tends to be a little warmer near Lake Michigan in the Fall and a little cooler near Lake Michigan in the Spring.

So what were last night’s lows that were recorded?

Chicago Executive Airport … 33.1°F
O’Hare International Airport … 34.0°F

Joliet … 28.4°F (South, but further inland)
Rockford … 28.9°F (further inland)
Waukegan … 32.0°F (lower than O’Hare because its further North, but warmer than Joliet, which is more inland)

And the latest day on record to freeze in Chicago?
The latest day on record to fall to 32°F was recorded on May 25, 1992.
The latest day on record to fall below 32°F was recorded on May 21, 2002 when the temperature fell to 31°F.

The latest day with an average low of 32°F at Chicago’s official weather station at O’Hare International Airport is March 29.

April 20 is the first day with an average high of 60°F. Chicago’s high temperature was only 43°F yesterday. A high of 49°F is forecast for today.

The construction work is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 7, 2011.

The road work involves four-lane reconstruction, patch work and entire replacement work of concrete at a cost of $8,000.

The Cook County Highway Department has maintenance responsibilities for 1,474 lane miles of pavement, 130 bridges, 332 traffic signals and 5 pumping stations from five maintenance garages. According to the Cook County Illinois website, problems within construction zones on County roadway projects can be handled by calling 312-603-1610.

UPDATE: Gary Amaya, the armed robber described below, was in possession of the same weapon that was used in the October ‘honeybee shootings’ according to ballistic testing that confirmed a match with crimes in October that used a .38-caliber revolver. Police are searching Amaya’s house — a small white bungalow with a detached garage in the tiny town of Rankin north of Champaign.

An attempted robbery at an LA Tan in Orland Park ended with the robber being shot and killed with his own gun Saturday night.

Gary Amaya tried to rob the tanning salon Saturday night when a customer walked in and saw a female employee at gunpoint and getting tied up with a rope that the robber brought to the crime scene.

The customer wrestled the gun from the offender when he put it down on a counter, and shot him twice. The gunshots killed Gary Amaya.

The man fits the description of the man wanted for approaching three construction workers in October 2010, shooting two of them and killing the other near Beecher, Illinois. The offender, named the Honeybee Gunman, then crossed the Illinois-Indiana border and shot and injured a farmer.

Illinois and Indiana law officers created a bi-state task force to track down the gunman who talked about bees and plywood, killed the one person, seriously wounded the two others and terrorized residents on both sides of the Illinois-Indiana border.

Ballistic tests indicate the same gun — a .38-caliber or .357-caliber Colt revolver — was likely used in the shootings in both states, and now the caliber size matches the gun used at the attempted robbery at LA Tan. A ballistic test is scheduled for the LA Tan attempted robbery, which could help the investigation of the Honey Bee Gunman.

Police caught up with five suspects at Newbury and Banbury. Police called the parents and had them come to meet the police and their children near Newbury Place and Banbury Road.

Virgin America recently claimed it was negotiating with the city of Chicago for an “economically viable” deal at O’Hare, but Bloomberg is reporting it appears they will not be coming to O’Hare next year. Virgin America is a completely different airline than Virgin Atlantic Airways, although there are some familiar owners.

Virgin, partly owned by U.K. billionaire Richard Branson, released a statement yesterday that it will start twice-daily flights between Dallas and Los Angeles on Dec. 1, and similar flight to San Francisco on Dec. 6.

The announcement follows talks with the city of Chicago and carriers including Delta, American and United Airlines, and with Virgin America not yet successful in securing gates at O’Hare International Airport. The City of Chicago/O’Hare International Airport has leased the gates to carriers already serving O’Hare on an exclusive basis through 2018.

Bloomberg quotes Chief Executive Officer David Cush in an interview saying, “We’ve tried to work with the city and the airport and have made no progress in the last 12 months. We have a number of other airports that have been quite accommodating and are rolling out the welcome mat right now.”

Virgin America has aircraft that would let it begin flights from Chicago in 2011′s second quarter, Cush told Bloomberg.

Virgin America, Inc. is a United States-based low-cost airline that began service on August 8, 2007 and is also the product of British entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson. San Francisco International Airport is Virgin America’s principal base of operations. By law, no more than 25% of a U.S. airline may be owned by foreign interests and must be under the “actual control” of U.S. citizens. Black Canyon Capital LLC owns 75% of the capital stock and is responsible for appointing two-thirds of the voting members of the board of directors. The remaining 25% of the company is owned by Virgin Group, which also licenses the Virgin brand to the airline.

Virgin America’s mission is to provide low-fare, high-quality service for “long-haul point-to-point service between major metropolitan cities on the Eastern and West Coast seaboards.” Virgin America’s frequent flyer program is known as eleVAte and runs on a “dollars spent versus miles accrued” model.

Virgin Atlantic Airways Limited (operating as Virgin Atlantic) is a British airline owned by Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group (51%) and Singapore Airlines (49%). Virgin Atlantic is headquartered in Crawley, West Sussex, England, near London Gatwick Airport. While some cutbacks in flights from Heathrow to O’Hare have occurred in the past year, Virgin Atlantic Airways will still be seen in the skies over Chicagoland.

Virgina Atlantic operates between the United Kingdom and North America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia from main bases at Gatwick and London Heathrow Airport, using a mixed fleet of Airbus and Boeing wide-body aircraft.

A shooting about 9:10 p.m. Saturday in the 5800 block of South Russell Drive killed a 35-year-old man while he was standing outside a vehicle near Washington Park.

A shooting about 10:10 p.m. Saturday in the 8000 block of South Saginaw Avenue. A 22-year-old man was shot in his leg and transported to Stroger Hospital — good condition.

A shooting about 11:20 p.m. Saturday with multiple rounds in the 8500 block of South Hoyne Avenue hit three men. Three men were playing cards outside when multiple shots were fired. A 24-year-old man was shot in his left leg. A 25-year-old was shot in his right arm, and a 21-year-old was shot in his right leg and hand. All three men were treated at Holy Cross Hospital — all in good condition.

A shooting shortly after midnight Sunday in the 8400 block of South Hamilton Avenue. A 27-year-old man was shot in an apparent drive-by shooting He was standing outside when a person in a white vehicle opened fire in his direction, and bullets struck the victims left leg.

A shooting about 12:50 a.m. Sunday in the 5700 block of South Lake Shore Drive. An 18-year-old man was shot in the leg near a South Side beach, and was transported to University of Chicago Hospitals — good condition.

A shooting about 1:35 a.m. Sunday in the 10700 block of South Wabash Avenue. A 27-year-old man standing in the street was shot in the right hand by a drive-by shooter, and was transported to Roseland Community Hospital.

A shooting early Sunday in Bronzeville neighborhood. A 25-year-old man was shot in the neck and critically injured.

A shooting about 2:45 a.m. Sunday in the 4100 block of South Indiana Avenue. A man shot in the neck and transported to Stroger Hospital — critical condition.

No arrests in any of the shootings. Chicago police are investigating.

Police cordoned off several blocks near the original finish lines for the marathon and half-marathon. The bomb squad was on scene and used a robot to detonate the device about 10:5 a.m.

The finish line for the full marathon was moved to 13th and Smallman streets; for the half-marathon, Ninth and Fort Duquesne Boulevard, after the bomb threat.

Police ordered all runners and pedestrians out of an area bounded by Ninth and 13th streets, the Allegheny River and Liberty Avenue.

Surfing contest at Mavericks on Saturday with a swell that was larger than expected — 22 feet at 17 seconds (the period between waves) on the Half Moon Bay buoy. Wave faces of 50 feet and beyond were occurring. About 12 surfers were injured in wipeouts.

Chris Bertish of South Africa was awarded the $50,000 first-prize check.

A series of waves crashed into some of the thousands of fans who were watching the Maverick surf contest. Just after 9 a.m. Saturday, 13 people were injured and at least 40 people were knocked off their feet near Pillar Point. Three people were transported by ambulance to local hospitals. Broken bones were among the injuries, which included a broken leg and a fractured ankle. Many of the spectators were standing on a short concrete wall and were thrown back into rocks or mud by a huge wave. Electronics equipment, amplifiers, speakers and tables were also tossed by the wave that hit between San Francisco and Santa Cruz in San Mateo County.
