FIX: Google Maps Won’t Load in Microsoft Internet Explorer

Many websites use embedded maps from Google for enhanced content in articles. Unfortunately, users report difficulty while using Microsoft Internet Explorer because embedded maps do not display on a web page. The simplest solution might be to exit Internet Explorer and use Firefox (firefox.com), Safari (apple.com/safari) or Chrome (google.com/chrome) to view these websites. These browsers are more likely to function without any complicated changes in settings necessary.

If you still wish to use Microsoft Internet Explorer, you may try the following steps to view the maps on web pages:

THE EASY WAY:
1. First try a RIGHT CLICK of the mouse over the blank area where the map is placed.
2. Next, select REFRESH from the pop-up menu.

If the map displays, that’s it, you are ready to go. However, you will have to repeat this RIGHT CLICK step for every page that you view.

NOTE: This EASY WAY procedure may not work at public computers or kiosks where the RIGHT CLICK has been disabled. Also, the following more difficult procedure (THE HARD WAY) will not be available at public computers or kiosks.

THE HARD WAY:
If the easy RIGHT CLICK procedure doesn’t work, you may have to adjust your security settings for Microsoft Internet Explorer. After you adjust the settings as described below, you should see the map when the page loads. If you still don’t see the map load, you still may have to use THE EASY WAY technique mentioned above for each page that you want to view. (REMINDER: You might want to just use Firefox (firefox.com), Safari (apple.com/safari) or Chrome (google.com/chrome) … Do you still want to use Microsoft Internet Explorer?) Continue below …

If you’re having trouble using Google Maps with your Microsoft Internet Explorer browser, please try the following steps recommended from Google Help to see if the problem is resolved:

Clear the Internet Explorer browser’s cache

Clearing your browser’s cache may resolve the problem you’re experiencing. To do so in Internet Explorer 6.0 or later version:

1. Open IE and click Tools.
2. Select Internet Options.
3. Click General, if it isn’t already selected.
4. Click Delete Files … under the heading ‘Temporary Internet files.’
5. Click OK to exit.

Make sure JavaScript, ActiveX, and ‘binary behaviors’ are enabled

To enable these browser settings in IE:

1. Click Tools > Internet Options.
2. Click the Security tab.
3. Click the Custom Level button.
4. Verify that the Enable button next to ‘Run ActiveX controls and plug-in’ is selected.
5. If you’re using XP, verify that the Enable button next to Binary and script behaviors is selected. If you’re not using XP, continue to step six.
6. Verify that the Enable button under ‘Active scripting’ is selected.
7. Click OK, then click OK again to save your changes.

The easiest and safest way to enable Google’s maps in your browser is to add Google Maps to your list of trusted sites in Internet Explorer. Here’s how:

1. Click Tools > Internet Options.
2. Click the Security tab.
3. Select the ‘Trusted sites’ icon, and click the Sites button.
4. Deselect the option ‘Require server verification for all sites in this zone.’
5. In the text field ‘Add this Web site to the zone:,’ type ‘maps.google.com‘ (without quotes) and click Add.
6. Repeat step five for ‘local.google.com,’ ‘www.google.com,’ and ‘*.google.com.’
7. Click OK, then click OK again to save your changes.

Google Maps takes advantage of several advanced browser features. If your browser appears not to load the map properly, you may need to update your scripting engine. You can obtain the latest scripting engine directly from Microsoft:

Update the ’scripting engine’ of your system

For Windows XP and 2000:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
FamilyId=C717D943-7E4B-4622-86EB-95A22B832CAA&displaylang=en

You’ll probably need to restart your system after performing this update. Then, try Maps again to confirm that this step resolved your problem. Otherwise, try the next step.

Install the latest version of DirectX

Some IE users have reported that installing the latest version (9.0c) of DirectX has resolved the difficulties they’ve experienced viewing maps. To install DirectX, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx

Check for security settings or browser plug-ins

Some security programs and third-party browser plug-ins are designed to modify webpage content and may interfere with the map display. If applicable, please try temporarily disabling components that may disable our maps in your browser.

News comes fast every day. Some of it is incomplete. Some of it is wrong. Often it is not connected with past news, so the information on TV, newspapers and magazines is often conflicting and confusing. Many people just turn off the news. The negativity is too much. Too many questions and not enough answers. Overly stressed, these people are wise enough to focus on affirmations and hope, but they miss opportunities and cautions. The Cardinal goal is to process news -- to inform and encourage connection of information, adaptation to news, and ultimately affirmation and the pursuit of excellence in human effort: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
