MSNBC Buys Hyperlocal News Site: Holovaty’s EveryBlock of Chicago

Adrian-Holovaty

Adrian Holovaty’s EveryBlock, which is based in Chicago and runs so-called “hyperlocal” or “microlocal” news sites in several cities, has been purchased by MSNBC for an undisclosed price. EveryBlock provides hyperlocal news in Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Philadelphia, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle and Washington, D.C.

The 24-hour cable news channel MSNBC, a joint venture between Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and General Electric’s (NYSE: GE) NBC Universal unit, has hired all of EveryBlock’s workers, according to EveryBlock’s blog. Critics and observers of the network, including antithesis FOXNews, claim that MSNBC has become increasingly biased to the liberal side of politics, compared with other networks, especially with its prime-time lineup of personalities Chris Matthews, Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann.

Adrian Holovaty, 28, is a web developer, journalist and entrepreneur living in Chicago, Illinois. Holovaty, a Ukrainian American, grew up in Naperville, Illinois. He graduated from the Missouri School of Journalism in 2001 and worked as a web developer/journalist for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Lawrence Journal-World and The Washington Post before starting EveryBlock in 2007.

In 2005, Holovaty launched chicagocrime.org, a Google Maps mashup of Chicago Police Department crime data that was then succeeded by Everyblock after Holovaty was awarded a $1.1 million Knight Foundation grant and left his job as editor of editorial innovations at washingtonpost.com to start EveryBlock in 2007. Chicagocrime.org won the 2005 Batten Award for Innovations in Journalism and was named by The New York Times as one of 2005’s best ideas. As one of the first Google Maps added value products, it helped influence Google to create its official Google Maps API.

Clock in Header Removed — Data Center Fire Caused Delay in Page Loading

Fisher Plaza Data Center Fire Causes Major Internet Outage

On July 3, 2009 the clock in the header of Arlingtoncardinal.com ceased functioning because the connection to Clocklink.com was interrupted after an electrical fire and blown transformer knocked out Clocklink’s data center. Page load errors were noted and most users experienced immediate display of The Cardinal page header without the clock, but then the rest of the page was delayed for about 18 to 20 seconds.

Since this clock function interfered with the proper loading of The Cardinal pages, the clock function has been removed. The Cardinal pages now load much faster.

Direct access to Clocklinked was also delayed, apparently due to technical difficulties. Some other pages where clocks do not appear in a header style sheet have been left untouched across The Cardinal websites. These pages still load in a timely manner, but the clock is simply blank.

Due to unreliable performance of the clock in the header, and its interference with proper loading of web pages in The Cardinal, the header clock is likely to be PERMANENTLY removed.

The Cardinal looks forward to the return of Clocklink.com clocks on other pages [UPDATE Clocklink was restored sometime after 8 a.m. CDT]. Best of luck to clocklink.com in getting restored.

The outage at Clocklink.com was caused by a fire in a data center at Seattle’s Fisher Plaza just after midnight early Friday morning. A blown transformer knocked out power to the entire building Other web sites affected were Adhost.com, Allrecipes.com, Bartelldrugs.com, Bing Travel, Geocaching.com, Redfin online real estate, and Authorize.net.

News comes fast every day. Some of it is incomplete. Some of it is wrong. Often it is not connected with past news, so the information on TV, newspapers and magazines is often conflicting and confusing. Many people just turn off the news. The negativity is too much. Too many questions and not enough answers. Overly stressed, these people are wise enough to focus on affirmations and hope, but they miss opportunities and cautions. The Cardinal goal is to process news -- to inform and encourage connection of information, adaptation to news, and ultimately affirmation and the pursuit of excellence in human effort: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
