According to both the United States National Research Council and the National Science Foundation, the fields are collectively considered core technological underpinnings of an advanced society. In many forums (including political/governmental and academic) the strength of the STEM workforce is viewed as an indicator of a nation’s ability to sustain itself.

A scraper website is a web site that copies content from another website. Occasionally, just a page is ‘scraped’ from another website and used illegally in another website.

Scraper sites often add their own ads to the copied web pages after deleting the ad code from the copied web pages. Often the scraper websites will hit on popular news stories and try to get placed on top ranked search results pages. Sometimes the pages are copied carelessly and contain broken links or incorrect directory paths to the photos and other graphics that are located on the original website’s server. When this happens, the photos or graphics are missing in the scraper site.

Occasionally the scraper website producer will change the page slightly to conform to other original parts of the scraper website. Following are two screen shots that illustrate scraping. The first website screen shot is an original article Elliptical vs. treadmill: Which machine really delivers? published by the Daily Herald March 9, 2009. The second screen shot shows a scraper page from Middletown Gold’s Gym in Middletown, New York How does the elliptical really compare to the treadmill published May 20, 2009. The text is almost identical. If you read the text, you can see that one of the names in the articles is attributed to different geographic locations. For example ‘Arlington Heights Personal Trainer Mark Bostrom’ is changed to ‘Gold’s Gym Personal Trainer Mark Bostrom.’ Some other names in the pages posted on the web are also changed similarly.

Daily Herald article original.

Middletown, New York Gold’s Gym that scraped the original Daily Herald article.

A scraper site’s use of information from other sites without permission is in violation of copyright law, unless the websites are public domain websites.

Chances are you’ve walked into a Best Buy or a cell phone store or some kind ‘hip’ store and a store staffer has walked up to you with giant holes in his ear lobes. You probably pretend not to notice at first — like its no big deal because you’re hip, too. But then you can’t help it because your eyes just wander right into those giant ear lobe holes. Then you get bold and try to focus on things that you can see right through those amazing flesh tunnels — like you just found a new galaxy peering into the Hubble Telescope. So while the store expert at Best Buy is explaining camera resolution, memory cards and warranties, you are checking prices on the shelves behind him — gazing through his ear holes. ‘What about THAT camera?’ … as you try not to point through the line of sight going through his ear holes. Well, those holes are ‘gauges.’

Stretching (often referred to as “gauging”, in the context of body piercing, is the deliberate expansion of a healed fistula (hole in the skin) for the purpose of wearing body piercing jewelry. Ear piercings are the most commonly stretched piercings, with nasal septum piercings, tongue piercings and lip piercings/lip plates following close behind. While all piercings can be stretched to some degree, cartilage piercings are usually more difficult to stretch and more likely to form hypertrophic scars if stretched quickly. Healing is very important in between stages of stretching.

Stretching is usually done in small increments to minimize the potential for damaging the healed fistula or creating scar tissue. In North America, most stretching methods go up by a single even-sized gauge at a time. In Europe and most of the rest of the world, jewelry is metric, but the increments between standard sizes are similar.

Now in addition to tattoos, skin color, height, weight and clothing; police can add gauging to descriptions for missing persons and criminal suspects.

Chicago Fire Department and area suburban fire departments, including Arlington Heights Fire Department, use color coded tags to triage victims for treatment and transportation demands.

RED TAGS – IMMEDIATE ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT REQUIRED for victims who cannot survive without immediate treatment and have a chance of survival.

YELLOW TAGS – Victims are treated and under observation for indication of worsening condition. ‘Yellows’ are not in immediate danger of death and are considered stable, unless observations prove otherwise.. These victims will still require hospital care and would be treated immediately under normal circumstances without the overload of a mass casualty situation.

GREEN TAGS – Victims are ambulatory. The victims can wait for treatment and are considered “walking wounded” who will need medical care at some point, after more critical injuries have been treated in a mass casualty situaion.

WHITE TAGS – Victims are dismissed with minor injuries with no requirement of a doctor’s care.

BLACK TAGS – Victims are deceased or have obvious fatal injuries that are so extensive they are not likely to survive given the care or resources that are available. Resources would be more likely to go to care for ‘Reds’ in a mass casualty situation.

PTR stands for Petition to Revoke, which in Cook County occurs as a result of a violation of probation or VOP. If a person violates the terms of their probation, the State’s Attorney, prosecutor or probation department may file a Petition to Revoke Probation (PTR) and ask the court to issue a warrant for your arrest — a PTR Warrant. A new crime committed may also elicit a PTR.

Once in court, a judge could impose a new sentence that does not depend on the original sentence. Someone with supervision could be re-sentenced to probation. A defendant originally sentenced to probation could be sentenced to jail.

Common conditions of probation include: mandatory drug testing, restrictions on where the offender can live, community service, periodic meetings with a probation officer, or random check-ups by a probation officer.

MSNBC Trashes Obama’s Address: Compared to Jimmy Carter, ‘I Don’t Sense Executive Command’ AND enough MERITOCRACY to make you barf.

Why does he (Obama) continue to say that the Secretary of Energy has a Nobel prize? …
I’d barf if he’d do it one more time.

– Chris Matthews, MSNBC

Meritocracy is a system of a aristocratic or oligarchical government or other organization wherein appointments are made and responsibilities assigned to individuals based upon demonstrated talent and ability (merit). In a meritocracy, society rewards those who show talent and competence as demonstrated by past actions or by competition. Evaluation systems, such as formal education, are closely linked to notions of meritocracy.

This is opposed to other value systems, where reward and legitimacy is based upon possession of wealth (plutocracy), origin (aristocracy), family connections (nepotism), property, friendship (cronyism), technical expertise (technocracy), seniority (gerontocracy), popularity (representative democracy), or other historical determinants of social position and political power.

Some people who live in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana say, despite Tuesday night’s address to the nation, President Barack Obama is not doing enough to respond to the BP oil spill. (June 16)

A meritocracy tends to function upon, and promote, credibly recorded demonstrations of talent, and doing so only hoping to promote talent itself. Individuals may be talented, and yet lack any record of demonstration. Examples might be anything from a talented writer who has never sought to publish a book, a beautiful person who has never been invited to a photo shoot, a good idea which has no credible source, and a genuinely intelligent person who wasn’t graded well in school. A meritocracy can actually suppress talented individuals who have not demonstrated their talent if the meritocracy requires merit to record, or display, demonstrations of talent, which is a paradoxical situation commonly referred to as a catch 22. Also, rewarding such demonstrations is sometimes rewarding talent practiced outside of genuine need, such as student-testing or performance-testing, where arbitrary conditions are known to be subject to time limits, anxieties, limitations, and other factors hampered by conditions which do not genuinely call upon expressions of the talent in question.

The Peter principle, “In a Hierarchy Every Employee Tends to Rise to His Level of Incompetence,” notes that meritocracy promotes individuals based on the ability to perform their prior assignment, not the new assignment.
