Bystander video of a pig nudging a goat in a pond at petting zoo.

Remember when a YouTube user published a video that captures a pig rescuing a screaming goat — floundering in an unknown United States petting zoo. The pig appears to simply nudge the goat to shore, and both walk safely on land. And the pig appears to be a hero. But actually the whole video was a commercial for a new Comedy Central program “Nathan For You” which premieres Thursday.

The “pig rescue” was staged with the help of underwater clear plastic tracking and doting scuba divers because the pig was afraid of the water. At least 20 crew members assisted with the fake rescue. The show presents Nathan Fielder working to help small businesses. One of those businesses is the petting zoo, which will be featured in an upcoming episode with Nathan creating video buzz for the petting farm in Oak Glen, California.

The Official Vick’s Dog Chew Toy™ was created as an awareness product to the subject matter of the sport of dog fighting. The product concept was generated from a dog named Vick, who’s a great companion to a close personal friend of the manufacturer (Aim To Beginn, LLC). Because of Vick (‘the dog’), the manufacturer is very supportive of the efforts around the globe to eliminate the sport of dog fighting from it’s existence on earth, and to help bring cruelty awareness to each and every pet owner, and animal lover. The intent is to allow pets to completely enjoy hours of fun in retrieving, chewing, or completely destroying the manufacturer’s product!

Cooper, a chihuahua-whippet mix missing for two years from the Baetge family home in Sacramento, has turned up safe at a clinic in Florida. Cooper is micro-chipped and the family has no idea how he got to Florida.

One day in October 2009, one of the gardeners at the Baetge home didn’t close the gate and Cooper the Chihuahua-Whippet mix from Sacramento started a trek that ended up two years later at a veterinary clinic in Florida. Well, actually nobody knows how he got there.

Cooper was found wet and shivering on September 22, 2011 by two women in Brandon, Florida, following a storm. The woman took the dog to a vet, where the Cooper’s identity was discovered after he was scanned for a Home Again computer chip (read the reviews on Amazon below).

Diane Eldrup, owner of Muddy Paws goes to trial before a jury, Tuesday, Sept. 6 for 19 counts of aggravated animal cruelty, a Class 4 felony with a maximum punishment of one to three years in jail. Eldrup also faces 19 counts of animal torture, a Class 3 felony that carries a maximum jail sentence of five years.

Kildeer Police Chief Louis Rossi reported last year that officers responded to a call for assistance at Muddy Paws, 20429 N. Rand Rd., on Thursday Dec. 16, 2010. Officers observed four dogs in an emaciated state, searched the property, and called for the assistance of Lake County animal officials when more dead dogs were found on the property.

Nineteenth Judicial Circuit Court Judge James Booras denied three pre-trial motions made by John Curnyn, her defense attorney.

Counselor Curnyn made a motion to strike the evidence of dogs that were not sent for a necropsy. Six of the dogs were sent for necropsy to determine the cause of death. Curnyn says the cause of death of 12 of the dogs is unknown.

The defense also sought to bar testimony by Dr. Ned Bartlett, a veterinarian, saying that Bartlett was not qualified to render an expert opinion, because he has no expertise in performing autopsies and was merely providing testimony base on the expertise of David Gardiner, of California, a veterinary pathologist from California.

Curnyn also made a motion to strike the testimony of Bartlett — saying that his secondary information from of David Gardiner would be hearsay.

Assistant State’s Attorney and prosecutor Michael Mermel has said the six dogs were chosen for necropsy because they were the most complete. “The other dogs were in so advanced a state of decomposition that there was little or nothing left,” according to Mermel

A total of 34 dogs and numerous birds were discovered dead at Muddy Paws, a former rescue and boarding facility on Route 12 in Deer Park.

Eldrup rejected a plea deal offered earlier this summer.

Dr. Brian Schmidt, D.V.M. of Pine Bluff Animal Hospital explains why orthopedic injuries suffered by Alexis can wait, until the dog’s injured lungs can supply adequate oxygen perfusion to tissues.

Alexis, a two-year-old Siberian Huskie suffered a fracture of the left humerus (left front leg), a fracture of the left tibia and fibula (the left lower leg), and a dislocated right hip on March 23, 2011 when she was accidentally hit by a police car. But it is a collapsed lung that takes veterinary medical priority.

There’s no emergency fracture treatment, explained Dr. Schmidt. The priority is to stabilized the lung injury. The stress of anesthesia is not recommended because of possible emboli or blood clots, poor blood perfusion to tissues, and poor oxygenation. The orthopedic injuries require surgery. At least one fracture requires a plate to stabilize the bone.

An emergency veterinarian facility treated the pneumothorax (collapsed lung), and then Alexis was transported to Pine Bluff Animal Hospital in Morris, Illinois.

A canine tooth in the lower jaw was avulsed (knocked out) also. The tooth has already been wired into place. The hip dislocation was also reduced (put back in place), and that seemed to help with pain control. Alexis is also receiving pain treatment. Now all concerned are waiting for the lungs to be strong enough to survive surgery.

The bill for treatment may exceed $4,000. The family says that any small donations by credit card directly to the animal hospital would help.

After losing his two rear paws in a nasty encounter with a combine harvester, Oscar the cat is back on his feet after being outfitted with two metallic pegs that link the ankle to the foot.

Professor Gordon Blunn and his team at University College London developed the Intraosteous Transcutaneous Amputation Prosthesis (ITAP) in 2006. A miniaturized version was made for the smaller bone structures of the cat’s skeletal system.

A honeycomb design was developed that mimics the way deer’s skin and fur blends around its antlers. The titanium metal implant attaches to the bone at the point of amputation so that it sticks out through the skin.

The new method enables skin and soft tissue to mesh and grow around the metal rod acting as a protective seal to prevent infection.

The implant is more flexible because it becomes an extension of the bone rather than an attachment.

Prosthetic limbs are screwed to the external bit of the ITAP after the prosthetic heals and meshes with bone and flesh.

Noel Fitzpatrick used two ITAPs on the animal drilling into the ankle bone on both back paws before sliding in two metal rods.

The three-hour surgical procedure was risky because the small ankle bones could be fractured by the drill that was needed to clear a way for the attachment of the ITAP.

Oscar wore through his first prosthetic paws in weeks, so a more enduring material was made for his next set of artificial bionic paws.

Slaughterhouse Video Raises Abuse: USDA to Investigate.

The video documents several weeks of mistreatment of dairy cows at a California slaughterhouse. Workers would do “anything” (inflict pain) to get cows to stand up and remain standing for USDA inspection to qualify to be slaughtered for meat. Instead the “downer” cows should have been humanely euthanized.

A Southern California meat-packing company was barred from supplying school lunch and other programs Wednesday while federal investigators look into videotapes that show slaughterhouse workers mistreating sick or “downer” cattle. The video has prompted the largest beef recall in history.

From the USDA …

Statement by Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer Regarding Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company Two Year Product Recall

February 17, 2008

“Today, USDA is announcing additional actions as a result of the ongoing investigation at Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company. USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has evidence that Hallmark/Westland did not consistently contact the FSIS public health veterinarian in situations in which cattle became non-ambulatory after passing ante-mortem inspection, which is not compliant with FSIS regulations. Because the cattle did not receive complete and proper inspection FSIS has determined them to be unfit for human food and the company is conducting a recall … more …

Jake, Certified Rescue Dog.

Jake pushed through white-hot, smoking debris in search of survivors at the World Trade Center site after 9-11 and died last Wednesday following a battle with cancer.

Owner Mary Flood had Jake put to sleep Wednesday after a last stroll through the fields and a dip in the creek near their home in Oakley, Utah. He was in too much pain at the end, shaking with a 105-degree fever as he lay on the lawn.

Cancer is common in Black Labradors that are Jake’s age, but some wonder if the toxins and smoke he breathed may have killed him.

Owner Mary Flood adopted Jake as a 10-month-old disabled puppy — abandoned on a street with a broken leg and a dislocated hip. He became a world-class rescue dog — a member of Utah Task Force 1, one of eight federal search-and-rescue teams that searched for human remains at ground zero.

On the night of the arrival of Utah Task Force 1, Jake walked into a fancy Manhattan restaurant wearing his search-and-rescue vest and was courteously treated to a free steak dinner under a table.

Jake was one of fewer than 200 U.S. government-certified rescue dogs — a muscular animal on 24-hour call to tackle disasters such as building collapses, earthquakes, hurricanes, avalanches annd other disasters.

Mary Flood and Jake drove 30 hours from Utah to Mississippi, where they searched through the rubble of flooded homes in search of survivors from the wrath of Hurricane Katrina.

Cynthia Otto of the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine is researching the health of Sept. 11 dogs, and expects Jake’s autopsy and the other animal being evaluated hellp understand, prevent and treat long-term consequences stemming from 9/11 and other disasters.

A ‘cuts-and-gravy’ style wet pet food made by Canada-based Menu Foods is the subject of investigation in deaths of at least 10 animals by kidney failure. So far wheat gluten has been determined to be the source of the contaminant.

The recall involves such well-known brand names as Iams, Eukanuba, President’s Choice and Nutro Max Gourmet Classics, produced at Menu Foods’ Emporia, Kansas facility between December 3 and March 6.

According to the FDA, Menu Foods received the first of six complaints about kidney failure in pets on February 20. Seven days later, the company began an internal taste test of its food. A cat in the study exhibited signs of kidney failure and died on March 2.

Menu Foods manufactures a number of different pet foods sold under private label and store brands at companies including (but not limited to) Meijer, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Safeway Inc., and at specialty pet retailers like Petsmart Inc.

Menu Foods also makes pet food under contract for national brands like Procter & Gamble’s Iams unit, the Hills Pet Nutrition unit of Colgate-Palmolive and Nestle’s Purina PetCare.

All companies have pulled brands in question. A list of affected brands has been posted by Menu Foods at menufoods.com/recall.

The FDA has also posted a news release on this important dog food recall and cat food recall at FDA.gov/…/2007/NEW01590.

UPDATE:
MAR 27 2007 — Hundreds of veterinarians have reported cases of sick and dead dogs and cats related to rat-poison-tainted pet food, a veterinarians’ group said Monday — far more than reported by the Food and Drug Administration.

Veterinarians Information Network, a website of 30,000 veterinarians and veterinary students, said members had reported 471 cases of kidney failure in the 10 days since Canada-based Menu Foods Income Fund announced its pet food recall.

The substance in the rat-poison-tainted pet food was identified as aminopterin, a cancer drug that was formerly used to induce abortions in the United States and is still used to kill rats in some other countries.

The federal government prohibits using aminopterin for killing rodents in the U.S. State officials would not speculate on how the poison got into the pet food. No criminal investigations had been launched, as of March 27.
