VIDEO (AUDIO WARNING LOUD ALARM) Fire at Lake Louise apartments on Wilke Road affected two units Friday night. Firefighters applied an aggressive interior attack and successfully stopped the fire from spreading to a major fire in the two-story, 24-unit condominium building.

Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 8:21 PM Friday to a report of an apartment fire at 516 North Wilke Road Palatine, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received multiple reports that flames were coming out of a window. Apparently everyone was evacuated from the building, but firefighters reported heavy fire by the front door.

Two apartments were involved with fire — one on the first floor and one on the second floor. The fire also spread to the attic. Fire command reported three lines on the fire with firefighters working on the first and second floor. The first fire companies pulled a 2 1⁄2” hose line and aggressively attacked the fire from the exterior, while other firefighters stretched a supply line to a fire hydrant and pulled two 1 3⁄4” hose lines into the building for interior attack of the fires on the two floors.

Main fire attack was on the first floor while the truck company prepared to open the roof for ventilation. Firefighters accessed the roof with the aerial tower and cut a ventilation hole to release heat, smoke and fire gases accumulating in the attic. Firefighters also searched the smoke-charged building for any trapped occupants, forcing entry into numerous units. Other crews laddered the building and provided for emergency medical coverage. Due to the amount of fire encountered on two floors and the potential for fire spread, the Incident Commander called for a Box Alarm through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) about 8:34 p.m..

Firefighters reported a knock on the main fire apartment unit by 8:39 p.m. Firefighters had to open numerous walls and ceilings in the affected units to expose the fire for extinguishment. The fire was declared under control at 8:52 p.m. Firefighters continued to ventilate smoke and gases and perform extensive salvage and overhaul activities for some time after that.

No civilians or firefighters were injured in the fire, which left three units uninhabitable, displacing four occupants. Although there was some smoke and water damage throughout the common areas, the remaining units were tenable and residents were escorted back to their units by firefighters. Damage estimates are not available at the time of this release, and the fire remains under investigation by Palatine Fire Department investigators.

One pit pull evacuated the building on its own and kept running. Neighbors and police appeared to be able to stop the frightened dog. Kittens were also rescued from the fire.

The fire was fought by 46 firefighters, staffing seven engines, four ladder trucks, two rescue squads and four ambulances which responded to the scene along with six command officers and two Fire Investigators. Units from the Arlington Heights Fire Department — providing water supply to Palatine’s Tower Ladder — were among the initial responders to the scene as part of an automatic aid agreement, and additional assistance was received on the scene from Lake Zurich, Rolling Meadows, Mount Prospect, Schaumburg, Elk Grove Village, Buffalo Grove, Wood Dale, Hoffman Estates and Palatine Rural Fire Departments on the Box Alarm. During the incident, units from the Long Grove, Elk Grove Township, Barrington and Algonquin Fire Departments stood by in Palatine fire stations to
provide coverage for any additional calls. Palatine Police officers assisted at the scene with traffic and crowd control, and a Village of Palatine Neighborhood Services inspector also responded to the scene to evaluate the building.

VIDEO: Aftermath of truck crash with fire, followed by interview with men who saved the life of a truck driver who was trapped in his burning truck after a crash at Lively Boulevard and Thorndale Avenue.

Elk Grove Village police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 2:31 PM Monday to a report of a crash involving two trucks and a car Lively Boulevard and Thorndale Avenue Elk Grove Village, IL. Firefighters and police received an update that one of the trucks was on fire and that the drivers of the trucks were not getting out of their vehicles.

People working at a warehouse at the northwest corner of Lively Boulevard and Thorndale Avenue rushed to help with a fire extinguisher, but the fire was too much for the fire extinguisher to suppress the fire. Next painters from Integrity Painting and Decorating of Downers Grove were using a power washer to prepare a warehouse on the northeast corner for a new tenant. They rushed over with the power washer and water gun and put water on the fire in the cab and on the man who was yelling for help. Two Elk Grove Village police officers were then able to get the man out of the truck. The power washers continued to extinguish the man’s burning clothes after he was removed from the truck.

Firefighter/paramedics from Elk Grove Village and Elk Grove Township helped the crash victims and transported at least two victims to a local hospital (number of victims not confirmed … developing).

Firefighters from Wood Dale went to work on fire suppression while Elk Grove Village firefighters assisted, but focused on the contents of the trucks and securing the saddle gas tanks under the two trucks. Apparently neither truck was carrying hazardous materials. A substantial amount of oil/gas mixture spilled into a culvert and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District was called to the scene. Thorndale Avenue was blocked in both directions until about 5:15 p.m. when the eastbound lanes were opened. The westbound lanes of Thorndale Avenue were still blocked at 6:00 pm.

One of the Good Samaritans that helped rescue the truck driver reported minor injuries and was treated at the scene by Itasca firefighters.

Elk Grove Village Fire Chief Richard J. Mikel personally came over to congratulate the men from Integrity Painting and Decorating for saving the man’s life, “You saved his life.”

Graupel (Snow Pellets) Causes Treacherous Travel with Crashes on Bridges on I-294, Route 53 and I-290 http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/04/graupel-snow-pellets-causes-treacherous-travel-with-crashes-on-bridges-on-i-294-route-53-and-i-290/ http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/04/graupel-snow-pellets-causes-treacherous-travel-with-crashes-on-bridges-on-i-294-route-53-and-i-290/#comments Sat, 20 Apr 2013 21:58:55 +0000 Cardinal News http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/?p=61852
VIDEO: Multi-vehicle crash on I-294 over Central Road, crashes on Palatine Road, crashes on Route 53, and an extrication crash on I-290 over Addison Road.

Graupel or snow pellets fell about 10:00 p.m. Friday causing very slick roads. The pellets are extremely slippery when they are fresh on the streets. They often melt and then form black ice, especially on overpasses and bridges on interstates. That’s what happened overnight Friday. Traffic ground the pellets into dangerous ice on the roads. On most of the interstate and expressway, the bridge surfaces were frozen while the roadways were wet.

Palatine Road was immediately closed when crashes started occurring about 1:10 a.m. Wheeling police and Prospect Heights police were on each end of the Elmhurst Road (Route 83) bridge at Wheeling Road and Schoenbeck Road, respectively. Minutes later Glenview Fire Department requested an EMS Box at Interstate 294 in both the northbound and southbound lanes. Firefighter/paramedics from Morton Grove, Mount Prospect, Niles, North Maine, and Park Ridge responded to I-294. Prospect Heights firefighter/paramedics were kept busy on Palatine Road over Milwaukee Avenue.

Some drivers were whizzing by the crash scene at over 55 mph, apparently believing they were somehow immune to the fate of the other drivers that had crashed or were facing the wrong direction in the expressway lanes.

A crash with the center median wall also occurred on Route 53 over Palatine Road and on Route 53 over Northwest Highway — both crashes were in the southbound lanes. Minor injuries or no injuries were reported. At least two crashes also occurred on southbound Route over Interstate 90. The crash on Route 53 over Northwest Highway involved a dark vehicle unattended in a dark area with the rear end of the vehicle sticking out into the inside lane — very dangerous.

An extrication crash also occurred on westbound I-290 over Addison Road, just west of the Route 83 interchange. Both a van and a sedan were faced in the wrong direction at the median wall. The sedan already had it’s roof cut off, and Illinois State Police investigation was underway about 5:30 a.m.

Fatal crash involving a school bus with no passengers on Palatine Road, just east of Highland Road in Inverness.

Inverness police and Palatine Rural firefighter/paramedics responded about 3:50 PM Friday to a crash involving a school bus and an SUV near Palatine Road and Highland Road Inverness, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics arrived within two minutes and reported a school bus-vehicle crash involving extrication — possibly prolonged extrication. Crews on the scene requested an extra rescue squad respond to the scene. No passengers were aboard the bus.

The driver of the SUV required rescue extrication to free him from the vehicle. The extrication operation lasted just under 25 minutes. A medical transport helicopter was requested, but could not respond because of weather conditions. The male driver was transported to Northwest Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The bus driver was walking at the scene, and was transported by Hoffman Estates rescue ambulance to St. Alexius Hospital in Hoffman Estates. The school bus was a Community Consolidated School District 15 school bus.

A witness reported that the westbound SUV moved into the oncoming eastbound lane, and the eastbound bus driver responded by trying to evade the SUV — moving toward the westbound lane. The vehicles crashed, and the SUV was pushed into the north side of Palatine Road.

Barrington, Hoffman Estates, and Rolling Meadows firefighters assisted Palatine Rural firefighters at the scene.

Palatine Road was closed in both directions for an extended period.

Video at fire scene after female teen was trapped by a spreading fire and rescued by Palatine firefighters.

Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 5:10 PM Monday to an apartment fire at 450 West Palatine Road Palatine, IL. Police arrived on the scene first and reported a confirmed fire. Flames were seen from outside the apartment, according to neighbors. A neighbor reported one child was believed to be inside the apartment. There were also reports of possible additional children inside the apartment.

First fire units on the scene reported smoke showing from the second floor. Heavy smoke was pushing out a front window. Firefighters and police confirmed one child was still unaccounted for. With reports of a girl still inside the apartment firefighters got on their hands and knees and charged into the apartment for a search of the girl. First they searched both bedrooms. Next, firefighters found the girl had retreated to a bathroom and closed the door. She was trapped inside the bathroom with the fire moving toward her. She was protected and carried out of the apartment with the fire at risk of flashing over with deadly consequences. The engine company firefighters extinguished the fire while the squad and truck companies worked the rescue, and brought the girl to paramedics waiting by the ambulance.

The fire was reported extinguished at about 5:21 p.m.

Firefighter/paramedics transported the girl to Northwest Community Hospital. Firefighters also searched adjacent apartments next to the affected apartment on the second floor and below the apartment. No other residents were found in the apartment.

The apartment was heavily damaged and deemed uninhabitable, but no other apartments were affected. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Palatine Fire Department and the damage is estimated at $75,000. At this fire, working smoke detectors are credited in helping alert occupants of neighboring apartments who promptly called 9-1-1 for assistance.

Rolling Meadows and Long Grove firefighters assisted Palatine firefighters.

Initially, the Illinois State Fire Marshal was called to the scene.

VIDEO: Firefighters overhaul roof and walls, checking for any hidden fire, immediately after stopping a house fire in windy conditions on Roslyn Court.

Schaumburg police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 5:41 PM Tuesday to a report of a house in the block of 1000 Roslyn Court Schaumburg, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report of a house fire in the area of Rugby Place. A call initially came in from a resident in the 400 block of Alden Lane. Police immediately after dispatch reported they could see smoke in the direction of the reported fire.

Firefighters arrived within four minutes to report fire showing out the back of the house. Firefighters immediately went to work extinguishing the fire and performing searches for any possible victims.

Police went to work investigating the location of the residents to help determine whether any people were in the house. Police also blocked off Rugby Place for priority access for fire vehicles to and from the scene.

Firefighters had two hose lines on the fire, and extinguished the fire within about 20 minutes. A truck crew also cut open the roof to ventilate smoke, heat and gases from inside the house. Aggressive interior attack and exterior attack knocked the fire quickly, especially considering winds at the time of the fire were about 14 mph from the northwest — gusting from 20 mph to 24 mph.

Firefighters called for utilities and the Schaumburg building department to respond to the scene. Fire investigators were also on the scene. Heavy damage was visible at the back of the house.

No victims were found inside the house.

Infant Injured At Woodfield Mall “Dropped By Easter Bunny” http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/03/child-injured-at-woodfield-mall-dropped-by-easter-bunny/ http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/03/child-injured-at-woodfield-mall-dropped-by-easter-bunny/#comments Fri, 29 Mar 2013 23:25:46 +0000 Cardinal News http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/?p=60876 Schaumburg police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 6:10 PM Friday to a report of an injured infant at Woodfield Mall, Schaumburg. Rough week to be manager at Woodfield Mall. On Saturday about 11:09 a.m. paramedics responded with two ambulances for three elderly people that fell down the escalator. Fortunately only minor injuries were reported.

Today about 5:00 p.m. paramedics were called to the center court “holiday decoration” area for a report of an infant that was injured while dropped by the ‘Easter Bunny’. Witnesses reported that the bunny was sitting on a bench and lowered his or her arm, which caused a 6-month-old male infant to fall. The infant’s face hit the bench, and then the infant hit the floor face-first, according to the witnesses. The fall was a distance of about three feet. the infant was crying immediately after the fall, and did not appear to lose consciousness.

The bunny was relieved, and was helped out of the area with two assistants, apparently because it is difficult for the bunny to see in the costume. A new bunny came out in the costume. No camera rules are enforced in the area, because photos are sold by the holiday operations at Woodfield.

The infant and the family spent time in the emergency room until about 9:00 p.m. and were released. Police returned about 6:10 p.m. to the scene at Woodfield when the father of the child returned to Woodfield Mall to attempt to get a report. Police helped resolved the dispute.

The witnesses thought it was obvious that the costume hindered the Easter Bunny’s ability to see and move around. The witnesses believed there should be additional precautions to maintain safety for an infant being held by the bunny. They also believed the floor should be softer in case of a fall.

Illinois State Police Trooper James Sauter was killed about 11:00 p.m. Thursday while he was on-duty and stopped on the inside shoulder of the southbound lanes of I-294. His squad car was stopped after he had assisted a motorist nearby, and he was about to return to patrol work.

Glenview and Northbrook firefighter/paramedics responded about 11:03 p.m. to a report a semi-trailer truck on fire on the southbound lanes of the Tri-State Tollway I-294, just south of Willow Road. A few minutes later rescuers were updated that a car was under the semi-trailer truck, and that a victim was trapped in the car.

Firefighters approaching the scene reported a fire burning on the horizon on the tollway. On arrival firefighters reported a squad car under the truck.

Firefighter/paramedics also received a report of a crash with fire north of Willow Road on I-94. Northbrook firefighters responded to the tollway crash report north of Willow — reported to be just south of Lake Cook Road.

No crash was found north of Willow Road. Northbrook firefighters then stood by near Willow Road in case they were needed for the crash at Mile Marker 48.

Glenview firefighters called for assistance for a water tanker from Prospect Heights.

The driver of the United Van Lines moving truck was not injured, but was transported to Glenbrook Hospital as a precaution. He is also undergoing tests related to the investigation.

Sauter received a Lifesaving Medal while still a cadet in October of 2008 after discovering a motorcycle on its side on eastbound I-80. The Illinois State Police troopers know him for running across all lanes of traffic with his first responder bag. He cleared blood from the woman’s airway, and she survived.

Two Teens Rescued From Lake Zurich Near Paulus Park http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/03/two-teens-rescued-from-lake-zurich-near-paulus-park/ http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/03/two-teens-rescued-from-lake-zurich-near-paulus-park/#comments Thu, 28 Mar 2013 12:21:42 +0000 Cardinal News http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/?p=60810 Lake Zurich firefighter/paramedics responded to Lake Zurich near Paulus Park about 2:36 p.m. Wednesday and rescued two teenagers from and ice shelf after they fell into cold water with two other children — all residents of Lake Zurich.

A Lake Zurich public works employee initially tried to reach the stranded teenage boy, but he returned to shore because the water was too cold.

The teens were walking on the ice with a 9-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl when they fell in the icy water. The younger and lighter children were able to gain footing on the ice, and walked toward the shore on their own. The teens were stranded on an ice shelf about 100 yards from shore. Both teens were rescued by firefighters wearing cold-water rescue suits and carrying personal flotation devices just after 3:00 p.m. The teens were transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital with signs of minor hypothermia.

The two younger children were released to their parents after they were checked by paramedics.

Firefighter/paramedics from Arlington Heights, Long Grove and Palatine Rural Fire Protection District were called in to help about 2:50 p.m. — either at the scene or at fire stations for standby coverage of Lake Zurich.

Ice is much weaker in late winter and early spring, and especially dangerous in open water. Sometimes people can manage to crawl or slither on ice so they don’t fall through, but even an elbow can punch through the water an immerse a victim’s face or a rescuers face into the ice cold water.

A Chicago police drama series is being considered as a spinoff series from Chicago Fire — NBC’s successful series that is in its first season with 24 episodes. The new Chicago Police drama series would be introduced in the the final episode of Season One of Chicago Fire.

There’s word out that the Chicago Police drama is being developed by Chicago Fire creators/executive producers Derek Haas and Michael Brandt, executive producer Matt Olmstead and executive producer Dick Wolf, whose company Wolf Films produces Chicago Fire with Universal TV. The spinoff episode may be written by film director, writer, and producer Joe Chappelle. Chappelle graduated from Northwestern University with a Master of Fine Arts in Film and worked in Chicago’s advertising community before switching to film and television.

Some Chicago Fire actors may transfer to the Chicago police drama.

Wolf Films’ Peter Jankowski and Danielle Gelber are also involved in the production of Chicago Fire.
