There is a large racing culture in California, especially Southern California, which is considered to be the birthplace of North American drag racing.

Florida is also a state known for its street racing scene, especially in South Florida. Racers from the most populated counties (Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach) often uses the local highways such as I-75 or even US-27. The most commonly used highway is US 27 — a Highway along swamps mainly used by 18-wheelers trying to avoid heavy traffic. US 27 goes from Miami International Airport to Tallahassee, and is also known as “the Highway of Death” because of the swamps, alligators, snakes, difficult access for fire-rescue units, paramedics and police.

In San Diego, California there are tough anti-street racing laws, which include the arrest of spectators, and dedicated anti-racing police task forces.

In Illinois, street racing is a criminal offense in the Illinois Vehicle Code (625 ILCS 5/11-506). It is illegal to engage in street racing on any public road — street or highway.

“Street racing” means:
(1) The operation of 2 or more vehicles from a point side by side at accelerating speeds in a competitive attempt to outdistance each other; or

(2) The operation of one or more vehicles over a common selected course, each starting at the same point, for the purpose of comparing the relative speeds or power of acceleration of such vehicle or vehicles within a certain distance or time limit; or

(3) The use of one or more vehicles in an attempt to outgain or outdistance another vehicle; or

(4) The use of one or more vehicles to prevent another vehicle from passing; or

(5) The use of one or more vehicles to arrive at a given destination ahead of another vehicle or vehicles; or

(6) The use of one or more vehicles to test the physical stamina or endurance of drivers over long-distance driving routes.
(d) Penalties.

Recently, McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Dan L. Huber, of Woodstock, after a fatal traffic crash that killed two 16-year-old boys on July 1, 2012, on David Road, in unincorporated Woodstock. Huber was charged with failure to report a traffic crash, a Class 1 felony and aggravated street racing, a Class 4 felony, according to McHenry County sheriff’s police department release. Huber’s bond was set at $100,000.

The Arlington Heights Historical Museum hosted “Motoring at the Museum Car Show” Sunday, and the first car show was a success judging the turnout of vehicles and fans. The car show was open to all makes, models and years on Sunday, September 9, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Classics were a big hit, while Muscle Cars from the 60′s, 70′s, 80′s, 90′s and today were the steadfast stars. Trucks and Street Rods were also presented at the show.

Muscle cars included a 1982 Camaro Z28 with an awesome engine, 1969 Pontiac firebird 400, 2013 Ford Mustang GT/CS 5.0 302 California Special, Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396, Olds Cutlass 442 with T-tops, 1967 Chevy Camaro and more. BP has published a website with a database searchable by zip code that lists BP gas stations and non-BP gas stations that received off-specification gasoline associated with problems related to the alkylation unit at BP’s Whiting, Indiana refinery. BP issued a statement Tuesday, August 21, 2012 reporting that regular grade gasoline was blended at its Whiting storage terminal between August 13, 2012 and August 17, 2012 — producing gasoline that contained a “higher than normal level of polymeric residue.” BP’s Whiting refinery recalled a 50,000-barrel batch of gasoline (2.1 million gallons) after hundreds of reports of hard-starting and stalling vehicles from motorists in Northwest Indiana repair shops. Reports initially indicated that most of the motorists affected were in Northwest Indiana with a small number of motorist affect in Illinois near Northwest Indiana.

Not all cars fueled with off-specification fuel will display adverse symptoms, but if your car does experience hard starting, rough idling, stalling, or other drivability issues, please have your car towed to a repair shop to be checked out and call 1-800-333-3991 or 1-800-599-9040 to make a claim. Gasoline consumers are advised to save sales receipts, credit/card record and repair bills.

BP issued a statement Tuesday, August 21, 2012 reporting that regular grade gasoline was blended at its Whiting storage terminal between August 13, 2012 and August 17, 2012. The gasoline contained a “higher than normal level of polymeric residue.”

Costs have ranged from $300 to $1,200 to drain fuel tanks and clean fuel systems.

Gas stations have also shut down while underground tanks are emptied and refilled with clean gasoline.

Motorists with bad gas are can call BP’s customer hot line at 800-333-3991. Customers have reported difficulty getting through to a representative, but BP reports they have put extra staff on the phones. Affected fuel claims may also be submitted at bpconsum@bp.com.

Following today’s Board meeting on the 2010 multi-vehicle highway accident in Gray Summit, Missouri, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) called for the first-ever nationwide ban on driver use of personal electronic devices (PEDs) while operating a motor vehicle.

The safety recommendation specifically calls for the 50 states and the District of Columbia to ban the nonemergency use of portable electronic devices (other than those designed to support the driving task) for all drivers. The safety recommendation also urges use of the NHTSA model of high-visibility enforcement to support these bans and implementation of targeted communication campaigns to inform motorists of the new law and heightened enforcement.

“According to NHTSA, more than 3,000 people lost their lives last year in distraction-related accidents”, said Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman. “It is time for all of us to stand up for safety by turning off electronic devices when driving.”

“No call, no text, no update, is worth a human life.”

On August 5, 2010, on a section of Interstate 44 in Gray Summit, Missouri, a pickup truck ran into the back of a truck-tractor that had slowed due to an active construction zone. The pickup truck, in turn, was struck from behind by a school bus. That school bus was then hit by a second school bus that had been following. As a result, two people died and 38 others were injured.

The NTSB’s investigation revealed that the pickup driver sent and received 11 text messages in the 11 minutes preceding the accident. The last text was received moments before the pickup struck the truck-tractor.

The Missouri accident is the most recent distraction accident the NTSB has investigated. However, the first investigation involving distraction from a wireless electronic device occurred in 2002, when a novice driver, distracted by a conversation on her cell phone, veered off the roadway in Largo, Maryland, crossed the median, flipped the car over, and killed five people.

Since then, the NTSB has seen the deadliness of distraction across all modes of transportation.

In 2004, an experienced motorcoach driver, distracted on his hands-free cell phone, failed to move to the center lane and struck the underside of an arched stone bridge on the George Washington Parkway in Alexandria, Virginia. Eleven of the 27 high school students were injured;
In the 2008 collision of a commuter train with a freight train in Chatsworth, California, the commuter train engineer, who had a history of using his cell phone for personal communications while on duty, ran a red signal while texting. That train collided head on with a freight train – killing 25 and injuring dozens;
In 2009, two airline pilots were out of radio communication with air traffic control for more than an hour because they were distracted by their personal laptops. They overflew their destination by more than 100 miles, only realizing their error when a flight attendant inquired about preparing for arrival.
In Philadelphia in 2010, a barge being towed by a tugboat ran over an amphibious “duck” boat in the Delaware River, killing two Hungarian tourists. The tugboat mate failed to maintain a proper lookout due to repeated use of a cell-phone and laptop computer;
In 2010, near Munfordville, Kentucky, a truck-tractor in combination with a 53-foot-long trailer, left its lane, crossed the median and collided with a 15-passenger van. The truck driver failed to maintain control of his vehicle because he was distracted by use of his cell-phone. The accident resulted in 11 fatalities
In the last two decades, there has been exponential growth in the use of cell-phone and personal electronic devices. Globally, there are 5.3 billion mobile phone subscribers or 77 percent of the world population. In the United States, that percentage is even higher – it exceeds 100 percent.

Further, a Virginia Tech Transportation Institute study of commercial drivers found that a safety-critical event is 163 times more likely if a driver is texting, e-mailing, or accessing the Internet.

“The data is clear; the time to act is now. How many more lives will be lost before we, as a society, change our attitudes about the deadliness of distractions?” Hersman said.

A synopsis of the NTSB report, including the probable cause, findings, and a complete list of the safety recommendations, will be available online after the meeting.

The NTSB’s full report will be available on the website in several weeks.

Arlington Heights police discovered about 12:05 a.m. Saturday that the gates were stuck in the down position from Euclid Avenue to Arlington Heights Road along the Northwest Line of the Union Pacific/Metra railroad line. Later the gates that were malfunctioning were at Dunton Avenue, Vail Avenue and Ridge/Walnut Avenue.

Several vehicles waited at the railroad crossings, but then drivers turned around realizing the gates were staying down. The malfunction continued until at least 1:50 a.m. Saturday. Police stood by at the Vail crossing and Dunton crossing for safety.

Several pedestrians were confused by the situation in cold weather in the teens. One person wondered if the trains were still running. Several intoxicated pedestrians also were walking in the area.

Every train that passed through during the malfunction delivered long blasts of their train horns as a safety precaution in case anyone was passing the malfunctioning train gates and crossing the tracks.

The train gates frequently malfunction in this stretch of the railroad tracks. At Euclid Avenue and Northwest Highway, the gates frequently go up and down, or remain stuck down, with no train in the area.

The previous GT-R produced 530 PS (520 hp / 390 kW) and some record times on the Nurburgring, but Nissan wasn’t satisfied with that and has increased output to 550 PS (405 kW / 542 hp).

Also new on the 2012 GT-R is an asymmetrical suspension set-up for right-hand drive models which compensates for greater weight on the driver’s side of the vehicle. Performance is also improved by means of added rigidity in the body for better handling and a smoother transmission.

In January 2011 at the North American International Auto Show, Toyota revealed the 2012 model year Prius v, an extended hatchback wagon, which is derived from the third-generation Prius, and is already named the Prius Alpha in the Japan market. Prius v features over 50 percent more interior cargo space than the original Prius design, and is expected to go on sale in North America late 2011.

Prius Alpha launched in Japan in May 2011. Alpha is the basis for the five-seat Prius v planned for launch in North America, and the seven-seat Prius + planned for launch in Europe. The Prius Alpha is available in a five-seat, two-row model and a seven-seat, three-row model.

Also in January 2011 at the North American International Auto Show, Toyota unveiled the Prius c concept, which in production form is expected to be cheaper and smaller than the current Prius hatchback. Prius c is expected to be a hybrid petrol-electric car. The ‘c’ stands for city-centric.

The Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid is a mid-size plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) to be produced by Toyota Motor Corporation and scheduled to be released to the market in the second quarter of 2012. The Prius PHEV is based on a third generation Toyota Prius (model ZVW30) outfitted with 5.2 kWh lithium-ion batteries co-developed with Panasonic, which enable all-electric operation at higher speeds and longer distances than the conventional Prius hybrid. The production version will be unveiled at the September 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show (September 15 to September 25).

Toyota Prius vehicles are also made of plant-derived bioplastics instead of petroleum-based products. The car bodies are made out of cellulose derived from wood or grass instead of petroleum. The two principal crops used are kenaf and ramie. Kenaf is a member of the hibiscus family, a relative to cotton and okra. Ramie, commonly known as China grass, is a member of the nettle family and one of the strongest natural fibers.

Mercedes has officially unveiled the 2012 SLK55 AMG, ahead of its debut at Frankfurt Motor Show.

Looking decidedly aggressive, the model is distinguished by a new front fascia, aerodynamic side skirts and LED daytime running lights. Out back, there’s a rear diffuser, a trunk-mounted spoiler and a four-tailpipe exhaust system.

Interior changes are minor, but the cabin is outfitted with AMG sports seats (with AIRSCARF), a revised instrument cluster and brushed aluminum trim.

No word on pricing, but the 2012 Mercedes SLK55 AMG will be launched in the United States early next year (more from World Car Fans …)

A photographer/videographer in February 2011 happened to pass DEA and US Marshall working on seizing a warehouse full of exotic cars and muscle cars. The combined value of all of the cars in the warehouse — not all are shown in the video — is reported to be worth $4 million.

The word on the street is the cars belonged to accused ‘pill mill’ businessman Vincent Colangelo, a convicted felon and former heroin trafficker, who was recently arrested after being accused of selling as much as $150,000 per day of narcotic pills, including oxycontin.

The information about these specific cars seized and former ownership by Vincent Colangelo is not known by The Cardinal to have been been confirmed by law enforcement. Various media sources report that high prices vehicles, including a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren sports car and two Lamborghinis, were seized related to the investigation of Vincent Colangelo.

Last year people accused a driver of making up a story about a Toyota with a stuck accelerator.

General Motors is recalling 2,100 Chevy Cruze sedans from model year 2011, after a steering wheel on one vehicle came loose at 65 mph in Saint Paul Park, Minnesota. The defect apparently occurred because the steering was improperly installed. If future incidents occur while a vehicle is being driven, it could lead to a crash. No injuries or accidents have been tied to the steering issue.

GM says it believes this is an isolated problem. On the particular vehicle involved, the wrong steering wheel was installed at the assembly line, the error was discovered, and the correct steering wheel was attached — but incorrectly.

Chevrolet says it has changed the production process to make sure the machine used to attach the steering wheel can only accommodate the correct steering wheel. The company is recalling cars that were built before it made the change to the assembly process.

Dealers will inspect the steering wheel to make sure it is properly attached free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on or before April 8, 2011. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438.
