Gianna Chien: If You Have an Implantable Defibrillator and an Apple iPad, Don’t Hold it Against Your Chest http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/05/gianna-chien-if-you-have-an-implantable-defibrillator-and-an-apple-ipad-dont-hold-it-against-your-chest/ http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/05/gianna-chien-if-you-have-an-implantable-defibrillator-and-an-apple-ipad-dont-hold-it-against-your-chest/#comments Sat, 11 May 2013 13:18:40 +0000 Cardinal News http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/?p=62478
Gianna Chien was somewhat different from all the other researchers reporting on their work May 9, 2013 to more than 8,000 doctors at the Heart Rhythm Society 34th Annual Scientific Sessions meeting in Denver, CO. Ironically, Chien’s study is based on a science-fair project that didn’t even win her first place. Olivia Sterns reports on Bloomberg Television’s “Money Moves.” (Source: Bloomberg)

If you have an implantable defibrillator or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, you don’t want to fall asleep with your Apple iPad or a laptop on your chest. The magnets or electrical interference can cause the medical device to go into “Magnet Mode” which deactivates the medical device — preventing it from correcting a potentially fatal heart rhythm disturbance, should it arise. The Magnet Mode is an intentional feature for maintenance for analysis of the implantable medical device. But an Apple iPad or any computer laptop that is inadvertently placed near the chest of a patient with an implantable defibrillator, could cause the device to fail to work when it’s needed if a harmful heart rhythm happened to occur.

Gianna Chien is 14, but her high school science fair project, which found that Apple’s iPad 2 can interfere with life-saving heart devices was presented to more than 8,000 doctors at the Heart Rhythm Society meeting in Denver, Colorado.

If a person falls asleep with the iPad 2 on the chest, the magnets in the cover can “accidentally turn off” the heart device, said Chien, a high school freshman in Stockton, California, whose father is a doctor. “I definitely think people should be aware. That’s why I’m presenting the study.”

– Gianna Chien, a high school freshman in Stockton, California

The Apple iPad 2, for example, uses 30 magnets to hold the iPad’s cover in place, Chien said. While the iPad 2 magnets aren’t powerful enough to cause problems when a person is holding the tablet out in front of the chest, laying the iPad on the chest or holding it against the chest while carrying it can be risky.

An implantable defibrillator goes to work when it detects rapid heart rate rhythms and applies the appropriate conversion therapy to the heart. When a magnet is applied to the chest, the internal defibrillator goes into “Magnet Mode” which turns off detection of faulty heart rhythms and turns off any appropriate therapy for cardioversion.

The problem has also been documented with laptops in a study released in June 2012. A study showed that an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) experienced electromagnetic interference from a laptop computer’s hard disk. The patient with the ICD was using his laptop computer at home while lying on his bed. The laptop was positioned on his chest, when he heard a beeping sound from the ICD, indicating magnet mode conversion. The situation was replicated in a controlled environment, and the conversion was found to be due to the static magnetic field produced by the laptop’s hard disk. The ICD’s conversion to magnet mode can be dangerous because it ends all tachyarrhythmia detections and therapies.

Northwest Community Hospital Adds Genetic Counselor http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/04/northwest-community-hospital-adds-genetic-counselor/ http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/04/northwest-community-hospital-adds-genetic-counselor/#comments Mon, 01 Apr 2013 19:05:52 +0000 Cardinal News http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/?p=61027 ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (March 28, 2013) – Northwest Community Healthcare’s genetic counseling program welcomes a new member who is helping patients and their families identify and manage their hereditary risks of developing cancer.

Avis Gibons, MS, CGC, a licensed and board-certified genetic counselor with experience in both clinical and research settings, is now serving patients whose personal or family medical histories indicate an increased risk of developing cancer. In her role, Gibons meets with patients to review personal and family medical histories, assesses patients’ risks of developing cancer, coordinates genetic testing and discusses results, and presents cancer screening and risk reduction options.

“We are thrilled that Avis has joined NCH’s genetic counseling team,” Keith Ammons, director of cancer services at NCH, says. “Her previous experience will be an asset to the genetic counseling team.”

Before joining NCH, Gibons served as genetic counselor at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital in Chicago, where she assisted in establishing a formal high-risk cancer genetics clinic. Dedicated to raising awareness about genetic contributions to disease, she also has designed human genetics course curriculum for clinical research professionals, presented seminars in genetics to community members, and delivered continuing medical education in cancer risk assessment and hereditary cancer syndromes to healthcare providers. Gibons has completed a certificate in clinical cancer genetics from City of Hope, a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center and a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.

Gibons is an adjunct faculty member in the Division of Science and Health Careers at Oakton Community College, where she prepares students for careers in medicine and health sciences. Her research on the impact of genetic medicine on the employer-based healthcare system and on coverage and reimbursement of genetic tests and services has been cited in a report to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Gibons says that the multidisciplinary Commission on Cancer, established by the American College of Surgeons, considers genetic counseling a standard of service necessary to ensure quality and comprehensive cancer care delivery. By helping to identify patients at increased risk of developing cancer, genetic counseling can have dramatic effects on early detection and cancer outcome. In addition, genetic counseling empowers patients to make informed decisions about cancer screening, cancer prevention and genetic testing.

The NCH Genetic Counseling Team has more than 20 years of experience providing genetic counseling, including review of medical history, assessment of cancer risk, and consideration of early detection and risk reduction options. For more information visit www.nch.org/genes.

In 1978, 25-year-old college dropout John Mackey and his 21-year-old girlfriend Rene Lawson, borrowed $45,000 from family and friends to open a small natural foods store called SaferWay in Austin, Texas. The name was a spoof of Safeway, owner of Dominick’s.

When the couple were evicted from their apartment for storing food products in their apartment unit, they decided to live at the SaferWay store. Because it was zoned for commercial use, there was no shower stall. They bathed using a water hose attached to a dishwasher.

They survived a flood that caused $400,000 damage to their store. They had no insurance, but customers pitched in to help them recover because they didn’t want to see the store disappear.

Today John Mackey is the co-CEO with Walter Robb overseeing over 320 stores in North America. Whole Foods Market only sells products that meet its own quality standards declared as “natural”, which the store defines as: minimally processed foods that are free of hydrogenated fats, and free of artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, preservatives, and many others as listed on their online “Unacceptable Food Ingredients” list.

Here is the Unacceptable Food List as viewed on the Whole Foods Market website on March 6, 2013 …

We reserve the right to change this list at any time. Please note that creating a product with no unacceptable ingredients does not guarantee that Whole Foods Market will sell it. This list is intended for illustrative purposes only. If you are interested in selling your product to Whole Foods Market, please contact a WFM buyer.

Learn The Facts About Colon Cancer At Northwest Community Hospital http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/02/learn-the-facts-about-colon-cancer-at-northwest-community-hospital/ http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/02/learn-the-facts-about-colon-cancer-at-northwest-community-hospital/#comments Thu, 28 Feb 2013 03:17:23 +0000 Cardinal News http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/?p=59927 Medical Group’s free seminar
It’s the type of cancer no one wants to talk about, but colon cancer is one of the most common cancers in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society. That’s why it’s important to get the facts about colon cancer and find out when screenings should begin.

With March being national Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, Northwest Community Healthcare’s Medical Group is hosting a free community health seminar. “Colon Cancer Facts & Fiction,” presented by Dr. Michael Hersh of the NCH Medical Group, is scheduled from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, in the NCH auditorium, 800 W. Central Road in Arlington Heights.

Dr. Hersh is a board-certified gastroenterologist who will discuss colon cancer statistics, risk factors, and screening guidelines and options. Dr. Hersh and two other gastroenterologists from NCH Medical Group, Dr. Ami Behara and Dr. Aaron Benson, also will answer questions and dispel common misconceptions.

Colon cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States. Approximately 150,000 Americans will be diagnosed with the disease this year, and almost 50,000 people will die from colon cancer. Screening can prevent cancer through the removal of pre-cancerous polyps, and for those with colon cancer, improve survival through early detection.

While the March event is free, registration is required because space is limited. Attendees also can sign up by calling HealthConnection at 847.618.4968. Complimentary beverages and snacks are available. Attendees should park in the Visitor Garage on the east side of the campus.

For more details about Northwest Community Hospital’s Gastroenterology Center and its comprehensive services, visit the hospital’s website at nch.org/colon.

Northwest Community Hospital Hosts Parents Of Preemies Event http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/02/northwest-community-hospital-hosts-parents-of-preemies-event/ http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/02/northwest-community-hospital-hosts-parents-of-preemies-event/#comments Thu, 28 Feb 2013 03:12:15 +0000 Cardinal News http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/?p=59925 Recognizing the courage and commitment of parents of premature babies, Northwest Community Hospital (NCH) is hosting a Parents of Preemies Day on Sunday, March 10, to bring awareness to premature births.

The free community event is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the NCH Auditorium, 800 W. Central Road, Arlington Heights. Parents of preemies, families, friends and medical professionals are encouraged to attend the event, which will feature exhibitors from preemie and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) support organizations. Neonatologist Dr. Joel Fisher, director of the NICU at NCH, will speak at 10:30 a.m. and conduct a question-and-answer session after his presentation. Registrations are now being accepted at http://ppdchicago.eventbrite.com/.

The NICU Parent Advisory Council at NCH is creating a lending closet of preemie-sized clothing and will be accepting clothing donations at the event. Brunch-style appetizers will be served and several child-friendly activities are scheduled. Mascots from the Chicago Wolves and Schaumburg Boomers will make an appearance and kids will be entertained with face painting, crafts and snacks. A free raffle drawing also is scheduled.

As part of the second annual Parents of Preemies Day, Graham’s Foundation is hosting free local community outreach, support and awareness events for parents of preemies and their children and the general public. The event sponsored by NCH is hosted by local NICU support organization Eli’s Hope. Each year, 13 million babies are born prematurely throughout the world. Medical breakthroughs continue to improve outcomes for preemies, but experts are only now beginning to understand the intense psychological effects that premature birth has on parents.

Heavy Snow Today Is Known As “Heart Attack Snow” But It Should Also Be Known As “Hand Injury Snow” http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/02/heavy-snow-today-is-known-as-heart-attack-snow-but-it-should-also-be-known-as-hand-injury-snow/ http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/02/heavy-snow-today-is-known-as-heart-attack-snow-but-it-should-also-be-known-as-hand-injury-snow/#comments Tue, 26 Feb 2013 22:34:56 +0000 Cardinal News http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/?p=59882 Today’s snow is especially heavy and wet. Warm air in the atmosphere, and the actual snow falling to the ground brought the ground air temperature down to freezing or slightly below freezing. The snow was on the verge of being rain, which makes for heavy, wet snow.

Shoveling can be good exercise, but only if you are already in good shape. Shoveling stresses the low back, neck and shoulders and the cardiovascular system.

Most important, if you have heart attack risk factors, don’t shovel snow. Get someone to do it for you.

Every year people die from heart attacks or sudden cardiac death while shoveling snow. The combination of speed and load can be very stressful on the cardiovascular system. Learn to pace during shoveling. Learn to take your heart rate and know your safe target heart rate range. Watch for symptoms of breathlessness, muscle fatigue and chest discomfort. Keep in mind the following:

(1) heavy load puts more stress on the heart,

(2) excessive speed of shoveling puts more stress on the heart,

(3) how far you throw the snow puts varying levels of stress on the heart,

(4) longer duration of shoveling puts more stress on the heart, and

(5) breathing cold air puts more stress on the heart and lungs.

Consider multiple shoveling sessions rather than one big session at the end of the snowfall. Watch the weather forecast and radar to keep up with snowfall expectations.

Another risk of heavy wet snow is that it is more likely to clog the snowblower chute. More fingers and hand injuries occur when wet snow falls. Compared to dry snow, wet snow clogs the snowblower chute, resulting in people to putting their hands in the chute to dislodge the snow. If they forget to turn off the snow blower … OUCH. People often suffer serious injuries involving amputation of fingers.

The injured are lucky if they can have the fingers re-attached by a hand surgeon.

It is best to get in the habit of using a stick to dislodge the snow in the chute … even when you remember to shut off the snowblower … then even if you forget to turn off the blower, the stick gets damaged, not your hand. Make sure you follow the snowblower manufacturers directions.

Time’s “Bitter Pill” Explains: “Who Should Pay for Health Care?” How About “Why Does Health Care Cost So Much? http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/02/times-bitter-pill-explains-who-should-pay-for-health-care-how-about-why-does-health-care-cost-so-much/ http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/02/times-bitter-pill-explains-who-should-pay-for-health-care-how-about-why-does-health-care-cost-so-much/#comments Sat, 23 Feb 2013 19:59:47 +0000 Cardinal News http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/?p=59716
Steven Brill talks to TIME about his cover story “Bitter Pill: Why Medical Bills Are Killing Us” on the outrageous pricing and egregious profits that are destroying our health care.

Why Does Healthcare Cost so Much?

Sample Answers:

$77 for a box of gauze pads that someone could get at the drug store for $1.

1 “ACETAMINOPHE TABS 325 MG.” for one generic Tylenol pill, but someone could order 100 tablets on Amazon for $1.49.

$283.00 for a “CHEST, PA AND LAT 71020.” — a simple chest X-ray, which is only $20.44 for a patient on Medicare, the government health care program for the elderly.

$13,702 for “1 RITUXIMAB INJ 660 — an injection of cancer wonder drug Rituxan marked up over three times the $4,000 (possibly $3,500 at volume discount) that the hospital pays for the drug.

The Charge Master list at a hospital is a list of the thousands of items that they charge for at exorbitant prices. The explanation of the exorbitant prices from on hospital … “The issues related to health care finance are complex for patients, health care providers, payers and government entities alike … MD Anderson’s clinical billing and collection practices are similar to those of other major hospitals and academic medical centers.”

In our largest cities, the healthcare system offers lavish paychecks even to midlevel hospital managers, like the 14 administrators at New York City’s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center who are paid over $500,000 a year, including six who make over $1 million.

Obamacare does very little to control prices healthcare expense, like prescription drugs, medical procedures, or CT scans.

February 18 Immunization Clinic at Village of Arlington Heights Cancelled Due to Lower Federal Funding Levels http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/02/february-18-immunization-clinic-at-village-of-arlington-heights-cancelled-due-to-lower-federal-funding-levels/ http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/02/february-18-immunization-clinic-at-village-of-arlington-heights-cancelled-due-to-lower-federal-funding-levels/#comments Thu, 14 Feb 2013 13:16:24 +0000 Cardinal News http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/?p=59333 Due to lower Federal funding levels, the Village of Arlington Heights Health Services Unit is unable to host the February 18 Community Partnership Immunization Clinic that has provided vaccines to children under the age of 19 on a monthly basis since 1993.

A notice was recently given by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention, indicating that funds are no longer available to sustain the vaccine for the under-insured population effective January 1, 2013. Unfortunately, 87 percent of the children seeking vaccine administration from the Community Partnership clinic are included in the under-insured category. For those under-insured, vaccines are available at many local pharmacies.

In response to the funding notification, Health Services has been in ongoing communication with the CDC and IDPH in an effort to obtain “deputization,” a designation that is required to allow the Community Partnership Immunization Clinic to serve the under-insured population. At this time, no decision has been made to grant this status to the Village’s Health Services Unit. The Village will continue efforts to re-establish this Clinic with the ability to serve all children who do not have coverage for immunizations. In the meantime, those who would typically receive immunizations through the Clinic can receive a vaccine from Federally Qualified Health Centers, Rural Health Centers or Certified Local Health Departments, which includes the Cook County Department of Public Health.

For those with no insurance, area clinics still in operation include the Cook County Department of Public Health in Rolling Meadows (847-818-2860), Hoffman Estates Village Hall (847- 781-4850), and Elk Grove Village Hall (847-357-4240). For those needing immunization summary records, please call Arlington Heights Health Services at 847-368-5760.

Lady Gaga Hip Injury that Postponed Tour Followed a Period of Weight Gain http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/02/lady-gaga-hip-injury-that-postponed-tour-followed-a-period-of-weight-gain/ http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/2013/02/lady-gaga-hip-injury-that-postponed-tour-followed-a-period-of-weight-gain/#comments Thu, 14 Feb 2013 00:19:38 +0000 Cardinal News http://www.arlingtoncardinal.com/?p=59304 Lady Gaga says she’s “heartsick” to postpone four shows after sustaining an injury that’s left her unable to walk. Her performances set for Feb. 13-14 in Chicago, Feb. 16 in Detroit and Feb. 17 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, have been postponed due to a case of synovitis, an inflammation of the synovial membrane in a joint or joints. Later she was reported to have suffered a hip labral tear, which may require arthroscopic surgery. The labrum functions as a washer in the hip joint to help secure the thigh bone in the hip joint. Long term suffering with synovitis can result in degeneration of a joint.

Gaga posted on Twitter to explain her condition, saying she injured herself during a performance a while back and her condition has worsened, leaving her immobile following Monday’s concert in Montreal. She had been hiding the injury from her staff, but can no longer perform.

“I’ve been hiding a show injury and chronic pain for sometime now, over the last month it has worsened. I’ve been praying it would heal”.

– Lady Gaga

The remainder of the “Born This Way Ball” tour is expected to continue on schedule, beginning with a two-night stand in Philadelphia on Feb. 19-20.

Makeup dates for the postponed shows will be announced later.

Lady Gaga has had some ups and downs in body weights which has been extensively documented in the gossip news. Extra weight is hard on joints — especially the weight-bearing joints, such as the hips, knees and ankles.
