AT&T is expanding their 3G network along the CTA system, including the subways, and is in the final stages of network upgrades. Some customers in some subway locations may already be able to make phone calls, send email and share data with their AT&T devices while on CTA trains, even while underground.
AT&T becomes the fourth wireless provider to offer service in the subways, after Cricket Communications, Verizon Wireless and U.S. Cellular.
AT&T entered a 10-year contract to lease the wireless infrastructure installed by CTA. The venture is expected to bring the CTA $3.1 million in revenue over the life of the contract.
Boingo and its partner, Concourse Communications, are working with Metra on a pilot program to install WiFi on the South Shore Line of Chicago’s Metra train line.
Concourse has installed equipment along a seven-mile stretch of the South Shore Line and has been testing the installation. If successful, technicians will proceed with plans to install the network along the entire 100-mile stretch of track that runs from Chicago to South Bend.
There is optimism that Wi-Fi will eventually be added to all the other Metra lines.
Lifetime Fitness has a Wi-Fi signal near the Lifetime Cafe near the front lobby. The signal is strong in the entire foyer lobby. Lifetime Fitness offers a free Dragnfly account … the only aggravation is that you have to enter your password every time you open your wireless connection.
The AT&T EDGE network is also strong on most of the second floor of LIFETIME FITNESS for all of you iPhone users.
Verizon Wireless EVDO is also very strong throughout most of the facility.
All wireless signals are weak in the locker room, but since most wireless-capable units have cameras, users probably shouldn’t be operating their cell phones or PDA’s or iPhones in the locker room anyway.
Welcome to notes ‘on the street’ about signal strength from Wi-Fi and cell phone signals in the northwest suburbs and the Chicago metropolitan area.
