Two Men Arrested Upon Arrival of Their United Airlines Flight in Amsterdam After Suspicious Activities

Ahmed Mohamed Nasser al Soofi, of Detroit, MI, and Hezem al Murisi were taken off a Chicago-to-Amsterdam United Airlines flight in the Netherlands and have been charged by Dutch police with “preparation of a terrorist attack.”

The men are suspected of traveling with “mock bombs” in their luggage and were arrested Monday morning at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.

The two men — possibly from Yemen — were allowed to board the flight at O’Hare airport last night despite security concerns surrounding al Soofi.

Airport security screeners in Birmingham, Alabama first stopped al Soofi and referred him to additional screening because he was wearing “bulky clothing” — a risk factor for terror suspects. He was also found to be carrying $7,000 in cash. A security check of his luggage found a cell phone taped to a Pepto-Bismol bottle, three cell phones taped together, several watches taped together, a box cutter and three large knives.

There were no indications of explosives and al Soofi and his luggage were cleared for the flight from Birmingham to Chicago O’Hare.

In Chicago, al Soofi checked his luggage on a flight to Washington’s Dulles airport for connections on flights to Dubai and then Yemen, even though he did not board the flight himself.

Under close scrutiny, officials noticed al Soofi was joined by the second man, Al Murisi, and boarded the United flight from Chicago to Amsterdam.

When U.S. Customs and Border officials learned al Soofi was not on the flight from Dulles to Dubai, the plane with the luggage was ordered to return to the gate so his luggage could be removed and checked. Additional screening found no evidence of explosives.

Both men were detained by Dutch authorities at the request of United States officials when the United flight landed in Amsterdam.

No rules prohibit carrying knives or taped cell phones and watches in checked baggage.

Five U.S. Muslim Men Sentenced with Terror Charges to 10 Years in Prison in Pakistan

Five American men were convicted on Thursday on “terror” charges by a Pakistani court and sentenced to 10 years in prison in a case that has heightened concerns about Westerners traveling to Pakistan to contact Islamist extremist groups.

Five US citizens were sentenced to ten years in prison in Pakistan for contacting militant groups and plotting attacks against US troops in Afghanistan. The five offenders, all male students in their twenties, were arrested in December 2009 shortly after arriving from the United States. Umar Farooq, Ahmed Minni, Aman Hassan Yemer, Waqar Khan, and Ramy Zamzam claimed they had been tortured since their arrest and that they had traveled to Pakistan to help provide financial and medical support to fellow Muslims in Afghanistan.

Pakistani Man Arrested in Attempted Car Bombing in Times Square

A law enforcement official says a suspect in last weekend’s failed car bomb attack on Times Square has been taken into custody while trying to leave the country.

Police have confirmed an arrest, but have not released a name, related to the attempted car bombing in Times Square on Saturday. Police and federal agents believed the man was of Pakastani descent and suspected that he did not act on his own. News sources are reporting the suspect’s name is Faisal Shahzad, who was on board a Dubai-bound Emirates flight at Kennedy Airport when FBI agents and New York Police Department detectives took him into custody.

An investigation intensified in Connecticut, New York and Pennsylvania prior to his arrest.

The vehicle’s previous owner recalled selling it to someone who was either Arabic or Latino. Officials are not commenting on reports that the car sale took place via Craiglist at a Connecticut shopping center.

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the Pathfinder on the dashboard had been removed, but a number was discovered on the engine block and axle that had not been removed and the background of the vehicle was being traced. The license plates were stolen off of a vehicle that was registered to a Ford pickup truck that was in a junkyard. The owner of that truck has been ruled out as a suspect.

Two T-shirt vendors alerted police to a dark green 1993 Nissan Pathfinder that was smoking. Rescue crews arrived and discovered inside the vehicle three propane tanks, commercial-grade fireworks, M-88 fireworks, two filled five-gallon gasoline containers, and two clocks with batteries, electrical wire and other components. A 200-pound gun locker containing about 100 pounds of fertilizer was also discovered in the back of the Nissan Pathfinder.

Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. resisted labeling the attempt a “terrorist incident.”

Screen shot of Twitter.com home page as it was defaced by ‘Iranian Cyber Army’

Twitter blackout. Twitter down. Tweets did not go through early Friday morning. The tweet failure on Twitter was accompanied by defacement of the front page of Twitter using some method of DNS re-assignment most likely.

What did the message from the ‘Iranian Cyber Army’ say?

Twitter was back up in about an hour and fixed by 1:30 a.m. CT on Friday.

twitter-DNS-hacked
Tweet from Twitter that acknowledge that Twitter’s DNS was hacked early Friday morning, December 17, 2009 (twitter.com/twitter).

Iranian Revenge for the ‘Twitter Revolution’
The defacement appears to be a reprisal for Twitter’s role in the Iranian election protests in June 2009. Iranian citizen’s used Twitter to provide updates to the world about Iranian government reaction to protests. Iranian protesters beamed images from the violent protests when mainstream media was blocked from entering Iran, and forbidden from broadcasting information if there were journalist inside the country.

Twitter became so important in spreading news of the protests — and in aiding protester communication on the streets of Iran — that the U.S. State Department asked Twitter to delay a planned shutdown for maintenance.

A second site was also hacked with the same home page defacement …
