Animal stories dominate a bizarre day this Wednesday before Thanksgiving in the Northwest suburbs. Today’s B-shift on the police force started abruptly.

Wednesday morning several dogs were running loose, including one little Chihuahua that had police chasing him down the railroad tracks in Arlington Heights near Euclid Avenue and Northwest Highway about 8:45 a.m.

Police reported the dog was on the tracks and looked like he was going to stay on the tracks. Then he took off northbound on Harvard from Northwest Highway. Somebody else called in and thought the dog was a Boston Terrier — last seen near Ridge and Elm. Metra was alerted to be on the lookout for the 2-on-4 foot pursuit near the tracks.

Next a gas station clerk called in to report that a man stole a hot dog.

Whether it’s a long winter, the economy or just plain inexplicable, there have been two bizarre apparent suicide attempts in the past week — one resulted in a death. It’s times like these that you just have to bow your head and feel for someone who ends up committing extreme violence on his or her own body. And you have to feel for the family or friends who discover such acts of violence. And finally, but not in the least, you have to feel for the police and firefighter/paramedics who endure careers with multiple sightings of violence. For the emergency workers, you just hope it doesn’t occur too often in a short time period. It’s time to stop reading if you don’t want the details.

Both suicide attempts involved males. At least one of the males was in his 80′s. He allegedly attempted to shoot himself in the neck or throat area with a crossbow last Thursday morning. He survived after being rushed by Arlington Heights Fire Department firefighter/paramedics with a police escort to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.

The second victim allegedly killed himself using a powered Skil saw in the basement of a home, and was discovered Wednesday morning. Arlington Heights police are investigating both cases.

SUICIDE TRENDS
In a U.S. study in 2006, suicide was one of the top twenty leading causes of death among persons ages 10 years and older. Suicide ranked 11th, accounting for 33,289 deaths.

Males
From 1991 to 2006, suicide rates were consistently higher among males 65 years and older compared to the younger age groups. However, the suicide rates in males 65 and older declined considerably from 40.12 suicides per 100,000 in 1991 to 28.51 suicides per 100,000 in 2006.

Similarly, suicide rates declined among males 10 to 24 years from 15.43 suicides per 100,000 in 1991 to 11.39 suicides per 100,000 in 2006.

Suicide rates in males 25-64 years also declined from 24.08 suicides per 100,000 in 1991 to 21.27 suicides per 100,000 in 2000, but increased to 23.07 suicides per 100,000 in 2006.

Females
From 1991 to 2006, suicide rates were consistently higher among females ages 25 to 64 years as compared to the other age groups. Suicide rates in females 25 to 64 years increased from 5.75 suicides per 100,000 in 2000 to 6.80 suicides per 100,000 in 2006. Though an increase was also seen among males age 25-64 years over time, the percent increase in this age group is greater for females than for males: a 19% increase between 2000 and 2006 is observed among females 25-64 years and an 8% increase between 2000 and 2006 is observed among males 25-64 years.

Suicide rates in females 65 years and older decreased from 5.94 deaths per 100,000 in 1991 to 3.87 per 100,000 in 2006.

Suicide rates generally declined among females 10 to 24 years, except for an increase from 2.18 suicides per 100,000 in 2003 to 2.68 suicides per 100,000 in 2004.

According to a study from 2002-2006, most suicides among males were by firearm, then suffocation, then poisoning and falls.

According to the study from 2002-2006, most suicides among women are by poisoning, then firearms, then suffocation and falls.

The ‘other’ category for mechanism of suicide was about the same in both sexes.

Cindy Economou, 38, accused of taking home Karl Lambert’s lower left leg from the scene of a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 95 at mile marker 118 in Port St. Lucie on September 19, 2008, has been charged with one count of petit theft — a second-degree misdemeanor. After deeming Lambert’s foot unsalvageable, St. Lucie County Fire rescue crews amputated the foot to free Lambert from the wreck. The amputation occurred about six-to-eight inches below Lambert’s left knee.

Economou claims that Deputy Chief Bailey of the St. Lucie County Fire District initially told her she couldn’t have the foot, but later said Bailey said “something” along the lines of “I don’t want to know” that she interpreted as “‘unexplicit authorization’ … ” so she took the foot from the scene and put in a freezer. She apparently wanted to use the foot later for training of her cadaver dog — a dog that is specially trained and used to find dead bodies.

The amputated part was eventually submitted to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach on September 24, 2008.

A scheduled hearing for Thursday has been changed to 9 a.m. March 30, 2009 for a jury trial before St. Lucie County Judge Philip Yacucci. If found guilty, punishment could consist of 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Yep. Just after midnight — very, very early on Tuesday — Palatine police were looking for a heckler of the benefactors at a Palatine bar. Durtie Nellies was holding a Charity Concert to benefit two NIU-related funds: the DeKalb-Sycamore Community Memorial Fund and NIU’s February 14 Scholarship Fund.

The DeKalb and Sycamore Chambers, in cooperation with the DeKalb County
Community Foundation, have established a Community Memorial Fund. The
501c3 non-profit corporation fund is collecting donations to be used for a community remembrance.

Northern Illinois University has established a scholarship fund to honor the memory of the students slain in the February 14 tragedy. The February 14 Student Scholarship Fund will receive gifts through the NIU Foundation for the general scholarship fund and work through the NIU Scholarship Committee to distribute scholarships to deserving students in the name of those who lost their lives in the shooting at Cole Hall.

A total of six people, all residents of Illinois, died at the Northern Illinois University (NIU) shooting on February 14, 2008: Gayle Dubowski, 20 — Carol Stream; Catalina Garcia, 20 — Cicero; Julianna Gehant, 32 — Meriden; Steven Kazmierczak, 27 — Champaign (perpetrator); Ryanne Mace, 19 — Carpentersville; Daniel Parmenter, 20 — Elmhurst.

A total of sixteen people were injured at the February 14 NIU shooting: Lauren
Debrauwere — Lake Barrington; Samantha Dehner, 20 — Carol Stream; J.D.
Donohue, 19 — Rolling Meadows; Ryne Erickson — Des Plaines; Brian Karpes,
27 — Rolling Meadows; Patrick Korellis, 22 — Lindenhurst; Jeff Malina –
Glenview; Harold Ng, 21 — Mundelein; Joseph Peterson, 26 — DeKalb (course
instructor); Unnum Rahman, 19 — Plainfield; Maria Ruiz Santana, 19 –
Elgin; Jeremy Walker, 20 — Caledonia; Sherman Yau, 20 — Naperville.

A man wearing all gray with a red hat was walking up to people — pointing his finger like a gun and saying, “Hey, I’m a hit man!”

Nobody was amused.

PORTAGE, Wis. – A father was arrested after he restrained his seven year-old boy for one hour with tape while also taping a Green Bay Packer jersey onto him after the boy refused to wear the jersey.

Mathew Kowald was cited for disorderly conduct in connection with the incident with his son at their home in Pardeeville — about 30 miles north of Madison.
