NBC LA NEWSCHOPPER 4 Helicopter view and street view of a Los Angeles are police chase on Century Boulevard and Rosewood Avenue.

While KNBC-TV Channel 4 covered a police chase through Los Angeles southwestern suburban Inglewood late Sunday, January 12, 2013, YouTube user Jason Lee had his video camera aimed at his television, which was tuned to KNBC-TV with an aerial view of the chase. As the KNBC-TV’s helicopter showed LAPD and Inglewood police pursuing a stolen vehicle, Lee’s video pans right out his living room window to show the chase taking a right turn from westbound Century Boulevard to Southbound Rosewood Avenue.

“I thought he was going to crash through the window … real life Grand Theft Auto” at the “Inglewood Raceway.”

Jason Lee went outside and got more views of the chase

The pursuit began about 11 p.m., and the driver displayed gang signs and weaved in and out of oncoming lanes of traffic. The male offender, whose name has not been released, was arrested after police deployed spike strips, blowing out a tire on the car. Los Angeles Police stopped the offender with the spike strip at Arbor Vitae and Oak Streets.

Police reported the man had several weapons in the car.

Boston declared a public health emergency Wednesday as the city tried to deal with a harsh flu season and the state reported 18 flu-related deaths so far.

Google flu trends (Massachusetts).

Twenty-nine state reporting high levels of influenza. On Google flu trends, Illinois close matches the national trends.

In Boston, locally there have been about 700 cases of flu, compared to 70 for the same time last year.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, influenza activity continues to increase in the United States and most of the country is now experiencing high levels of influenza-like-illness (ILI), according to CDC’s latest FluView report. “Reports of influenza-like-illness (ILI) are nearing what have been peak levels during moderately severe seasons,” according to Dr. Joe Bresee. CDC continues to recommend influenza vaccination and antiviral treatment when appropriate at this time.

Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck advises the public on the current flu situation in Illinois.

“We have been and continue to see an increase in flu activity across the state. The flu strain that is predominately circulating this year is typically more severe, with more hospitalizations and deaths. From the beginning of October through the end of December we’ve seen almost 150 people admitted to hospital intensive care units (ICU) with influenza like illness. There have also been six flu-related deaths of ICU patients. This compares to last year at this time when there were only two ICU hospitalizations and no deaths.”

“Due to the increased flu activity, many people are going to hospital emergency departments. So much so that some hospitals have needed to direct all but the most critical patients to nearby hospitals because they do not have enough room or possibly staff to see patients. In most cases we recommend contacting a health professional before going to an emergency department if you are experiencing flu symptoms. The majority of people suffering from the flu simply need to stay home, rest and let the flu run its course. Typically only people with severe respiratory illness who have trouble breathing need to visit a hospital emergency department.”

“It is not too late to be vaccinated, to get a flu shot. The flu season normally runs through March and sometimes later. If you do get the flu, the vaccine can also reduce the amount of time you’re sick and the severity of symptoms. By getting vaccinated, you can also help protect infants, the elderly and those with chronic diseases who are at greatest risk for complications due to the flu.”
Many pharmacies offer flu vaccinations, as well as local health departments, some physician offices and health clinics. To find where you can receive a flu vaccination, contact your local health department or log onto the flu vaccine finder at http://www.flu.gov/#.

To reduce the spread of influenza and other contagious diseases, it is always important to practice the 3 C’s …
Clean – properly wash your hands frequently
Cover – cover your cough and sneeze
Contain – contain your germs by staying home if you are sick

Google Flu Trends is a web service operated by Google, which provides up-to-date estimates of influenza activity for more than 25 countries. By aggregating Google search queries, accurate predictions can be made about flu activity. This project was first launched in 2008 by Google.org to help predict outbreaks of flu.

VIDEO surveillance at the home of Al Alverson showing delivery of packages and theft of an Apple iPad gift for his daughter in Harris County, northwest of Houston, Texas.

A surveillance video allegedly shows a UPS driver stealing a package from a northwest Harris County front porch shortly after it was delivered by Fed Ex. Alverson received notification from Fed Ex that the Apple iPad was delivered at 9:29 a.m.

The video reports that at 9:45 a.m. a FedEx employee delivered an Apple iPad, with delivery committed with a required pre-signed delivery form that accepts an agreement that FedEx can leave the package at the front door. The FedEx delivery man leaves the package after removing and reading the pre-signed delivery form.

At 1:51 p.m. a UPS employee rang the doorbell and waited approximately two minutes. The video reports the “UPS guy” returns and takes the package previously delivered by UPS. The video shows the man, dressed in brown, examining the package and then removing the package from the porch. Earlier, while the “UPS guy” is delivering his package, the video shows the man glancing at the package left by FedEx.

Initially, Alverson contacted UPS, but was not satisfied with their response. Next, he posted the surveillance video on YouTube.

After Al Alverson posted the video on YouTube Wednesday night, a Harris County Sheriff’s deputy and an investigator from UPS responded to Alverson’s house. UPS tracked down the driver, who is reported to have been a seasonal employee. By the Thursday afternoon, the Apple iPad was returned to its rightful owner. No charges were pressed after the suspect was arrested and charged with theft by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Of course, the seasonal employee was fired.

According to UPS, Thursday, December 20, 2012 is usually the busiest day of the holiday season with about 28 million packages delivered on that day. UPS Drivers deliver more than 300 packages per second on December 20. Also, UPS operates 400 additional flights per day on the week prior to Christmas Day.

We can expect crime from all types of offenders will increase at the front porch with UPS reporting a Cyber Monday sales increase of 30 percent in 2012 — quoting an IBM Digital Analytics benchmark. Also according to the benchmark, sales from mobile devices accounted for 13% of Cyber Monday sales — up 96% from 2011.

Surveillance videos with offensive moves by both UPS and FedEx delivery people are becoming popular on YouTube — usually showing packages tossed over fences with disregard for the careful handling of the packages.

Harris County is the most populated county in Texas and the third most populated county in the United States with about 4.1 million people. The largest city in Harris County is Houston.

Harris County operates the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, which serves unincorporated areas and supplements police forces of incorporated areas. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office, founded in 1837, is the largest sheriff’s office in Texas and the third largest in the United States with about 4,000 employees.

Pittsburgh police say a teenager who sucker punched an English teacher in a downtown alley appeared to pick his victim at random. The attack last Thursday afternoon was captured on surveillance video.

A teen punched a teacher last Thursday at about 3:30 p.m., and the surveillance video that captured the attack, was used by Pittsburgh police to make an arrest Tuesday. the video shows the 15-year-old suspect walking with several other youths past James Addlespurger, 50-years-old. Addlespurger, who teaches English at an arts high school, was walking in the opposite direction in a downtown Pittsburgh alley and did not appear to interact with the youths immediately before the punch.

A carjacking suspect was chased in the red Dodge Caliber that he took and drove at speeds up to 110 mph. A police helicopter and a Fox affiliate helicopter KSAZ followed the car chase from 43rd Avenue and Indian School in a Phoenix shopping district.

The suspect fired shots at officers while driving near 43rd Avenue and Roosevelt Street early during the chase, which proceeded onto I-10 westbound. The man pull off Interstate 10 near Salome, Arizona and drove down a dirt road. He ran away from the car in an awkward or disoriented manner, and then stood by a tree and shot himself in the head at 12:31 p.m.

Shepard Smith reacts 3.

Shephard Smith was visibly upset with the display after repeatedly telling the video switcher to “Get off” and switch away from the scene. The switcher did not react in time, and the shooting was aired live. There is supposed to be a 5-second delay, but there was some type of “sever human error” as Michael Clemente, executive vice president of news editorial, put it.

After inadvertently airing live coverage of a car chase that ended with a man’s suicide, Shepard Smith of Fox News has issued an apology to viewers of his show. The incident occurred as the cable network carried a live feed of a man fleeing police on the interstate west of Phoenix.

An Anaheim officer-involved shooting that left an unarmed man dead in Anaheim, Calif. stirred anger for two nights over the weekend. Two officers have been placed on paid leave, and the local district attorney’s office is investigating.

A police shooting victim, 25-year-old Manuel Angel Diaz of Santa Ana, was pronounced dead at a local hospital at 7 p.m. Saturday after being shot in the alley a few blocks northeast of downtown Anaheim.

Police say they have been taking weapons out of the neighborhood, which is a known gang neighborhood.

On Saturday, as demonstrators gathered at the scene of the shooting, Anaheim officers fired bean bags and pepper spray into a crowd of protestors. Police said the move was in response to “some known gang members” who had begun throwing bottles and rocks at officers.

A K-9 police dog accidentally escaped from an officer’s vehicle and rushed into the crowd, biting demonstrators in an attack caught on video.

Police in central Florida say two men were trying to rob an Internet cafe when a 71-year-old patron began shooting his own gun, wounding the suspects.

Two men, later identified as Davis G. Dawkins, 19, and Duwayne Henderson, 19, allegedly entered the Palms Internet Café, 8444 SW State Road 200, and began threatening patrons with a handgun and a baseball bat about 9:52 p.m. Friday, July 13.

In a takeover style robbery attempt, the two offenders, wearing masks and hoodies, order approximately 30 patrons to get on the floor. “Don’t none of you [expletives] move,” one of the teens yelled at the café patrons. The offenders demanded money.

Samuel Williams was sitting in the Palms Internet Cafe in Ocala, Fla., armed with a handgun. Surveillance video released by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office shows Williams seated at a computer in the corner of the café. He is seen standing up and pulling out a .380-caliber handgun. He then fires his weapon at the offenders, who scurry out of the business.

The offenders fled in a vehicle that was parked nearby. Later the offenders allegedly concocted a story that they were shot at Scott Carrigan Baseball Park on Southeast 17th Street in Ocala. Police Department officers resonded to the baseball field, but found no evidence of a shooting there, according to Marion County sheriff’s officials.

Davis Dawkins was grazed in his left arm. Duwayne Henderson was shot in his left buttock and his right hip.

Video shows intersection cash from multiple angles as DWI driver runs red light and his vehicle gets launched after striking a median.

One man was injured at Locust Street and Westfield Avenue in Roselle Park, New Jersey. The video is provided by ATS American Traffic Solutions.

ATS reports that 77% of News Jersey residents support red-ligtht safety cameras at busy intersections.

Red-Light Safety Cameras
The system activates when motion is detected just prior to the designated stop bar AFTER the traffic signal has turned red. The stop bar is the point where the intersection technically begins, often designated by a thick white line. When motion is detected, the Red-Light Safety Camera captures two images of an alleged violation, taken in the rear area of the vehicle.

The first image shows the violating vehicle in front of the designated stop bar and the illuminated red light, demonstrating that the vehicle had not entered the intersection before the light changed.

The second image shows the violator in the middle of the intersection with the red light illuminated, providing further evidence of the red-light violation.

A close-up of the violating vehicle’s license plate obtained from one of these two high-resolution images is used to verify the vehicle’s owner as well as additional evidence.

The system also records multiple violation data, including the time, date and durations of the yellow and red lights.

The camera also records a 12-second digital video of the violation that includes six seconds prior to and six seconds after the violating vehicle runs the red light.

For states that require identification of the driver, an image of the front of the vehicle, displaying the driver’s face, is captured as well.
Trained law enforcement officials must review and approve all potential red-light running violations before citations can be issued. These officials closely examine the images, video and violation data to determine whether a violation did in fact occur.

Roselle Park implemented its red-light safety camera program in May 2011.Data shows improvement in dangerous driving. Since the program’s start, red-light running violations have decreased 47% at this intersection. However, as the video shows drivers remain at risk.

An analysis of the Roselle Park program found that ninety-four percent of the vehicles issued a violation have not received a second indicating a high level of compliance with the program and a measurable change in driver behavior.

A male collapsed about 2:30 a.m. on May 20, 2012 in front of a couple’s home in Port Chester, New York, where the homeowner recently installed video cameras, because of problems related to a bar down the street. The problems included trespassing and public urination in the street.

The homeowner reviewing his video estimated that the man was ‘molested’ or robbed five times in the two-hour time period from loss of consciousness and the end of foot traffic where the passed out man lying.

The homeowner scrutinzed his security video after the victim was discovered trying to enter his basement door, as the homeowner’s wife was exiting to do some gardening.

After a cuckoo clock was tossed over a fence in North Hollywood during a delivery by a USPS delivery man, the owner discovered the that the 1938 Black Forest Cuckoo Clock had a broken second hand and broken chains.

There’s accumulating evidence that “Handle with Care” has gone extinct as in the way of the dinosaur.

The owner reports that he/she was home at the time with the front door wide open when a computer in packaging was tossed over the front gate. A bell exists on the gate. The victim reported the monitor was broken.

How not to be efficient as a delivery man

Another thrown package posted in September 2007. The poster reported the package was a $400.00 phone that was also left at the wrong home (Looks like FedEx uniforms, but not confirmed).

And UPS is apparently not without shame …

Delivery man flips off the camera before tossing the package.

The underhand toss by UPS.
