Police found Tatum P. Lewis, 4, and her uncle at Stetson Avenue and South Water Street after a search by dedicated Chicago police officers and Illinois State Troopers early Monday afternoon. A Chicago police helicopter picked up a strong LoJack signal, that was associated with a stolen white Chevy conversion van, while flying overhead in the area of the Art Institute of Chicago Museum and Buckingham Fountain. Illinois State Police and Chicago Police were called to help search the area for a white 1998 Chevy conversion van. With excellent cooperation of law enforcement officers, the vehicle was located first at Stetson and Lake Street. A surveillance team was immediately setup to watch the vehicle. Minutes later police announced that both the suspect and the child had been found at Stetson and South Water Street, about one block north of the location of the parked van. Both suspect and victim were reported in custody just before 2:00 p.m. Monday.

The suspect is an uncle, John T. Mallory, 47, described as being a black male, approximately 6’2″ 240 lbs., with black hair and brown eyes. He has a scar on the forehead and scar on his left hand. He reportedly took the child without the permission of the girl’s parents.

The victim, almost 5-years-old, is Taytum P. Lewis, whose birthday is Aug. 2, 2006, and who is described as a light-skinned black female, approximately 3’2″ 50 lbs. She was believed to have been taken to the Chicago area by her uncle John T. Mallory. She was found apparently in good health. Chicago Fire Department paramedics gave her an initial checkup near the location where she was found.

Police were on the lookout for the suspect and juvenile, who were last seen in a 1998 white Chevy Conversion Van with Illinois license plate L88 0527. The vehicle is reported to be owned by the mother of the missing child and was reported stolen, along with the abduction. State police possibly had a LoJack signal for the van last night, but were unable to get closer to the signal.

Any citizen with information about the case of Taytum P. Lewis and John T. Mallory or who had seen the 1998 white Chevy Conversion Van had been urged to contact Chief Jeff Besing at the Mt. Carmel Police Department at (618) 262-4114 or call 9-1-1.

Mallory was being held at the Chicago Police Department-First District on charges of kidnapping and unlawful possession of a converted vehicle. An arrest warrant was obtained through the cooperation of Wabash County State’s Attorney Cassandra Goldman and Wabash County 2nd Judicial Circuit Court Judge Stephen G. Sawyer. Mallory is expected to be extradited to Mount Carmel.

A 70-pound Sulcata tortoise named “Spur” was stolen about 3:30 a.m. Saturday from The Animal Store, 4364 West Touhy Avenue, Lincolnwood. Video surveillance at the store, or in the neighborhood, so far is inconclusive.

The tortoise is well-known in the community for its appearances at childrens’ birthday parties, fairs and block parties.

Sulcata tortoises live about 30-50 years. Owner Kenn Bearman has owned the tortoise about 20 years, since the animal was about 10-inches long. Spur’s age is estimated to be about 30-years-old.

The tortoise special lighting, food, supplements and humidity to stay healthy. Neglect could be fatal.

The Sulcata tortoise, also known as the African spurred tortoise, is native to the Sahara Desert and the Sahel, a transitional ecoregion of semi-arid grasslands, savannas, and thorn shrublands found in the countries of Burkina Faso, Chad, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Mali, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal and Sudan.

Capable of creating tunnel system 10 feet underground
In the right environment in these arid regions, the tortoise excavates burrows in the ground to get to areas with higher moisture levels spending the hottest part of the day in these burrows. Burrows may average 30 inches in depth; some dig tunnel systems extending 10 feet or more underground. The tortoise is the third largest species of tortoise in the world and the largest species of mainland tortoise (largest tortoise not found on an island).

Any citizens with information about Spur are urged to contact the non-emergency number of the Lincolnwood Police at 847-673-2167.

Authorities are extending the police search for a 20-year-old Indiana University student Lauren Spierer beyond the city limits of Bloomington five days after she was last seen walking back to her apartment.

A $100,000 reward is now being offered in the case of missing Indiana University student Lauren Spierer. New reports have been revealed of a fight involving a man who was with Spierer outside her apartment building when she disappeared Friday.

Missing since June 3, 2011, Spierer was last seen leaving an apartment building a few blocks from her home about 4:30 am Friday. Police confirmed through security camera video that she had returned from Kilroy’s Sports Bar in Bloomington to her building at Smallwood Plaza for a short time about 2:40 a.m. with someone, but both left about 10 minutes later.

Police revealed Thursday that they now have additional video images of Spierer and the other person “making their way” from Smallwood to the building where she was last seen. Police declined to characterize her demeanor in the video or provide any additional details. The second building does not have security cameras.

Lauren’s father, Robert Spierer, asked anyone with information to contact Bloomington police at 812-339-4477. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is working with the police as a resource.
