ABC 7 Chicago Captures “Chicagohenge” — the Midwest Version of England’s Stonehenge

#ad▼

The first full day of fall is Tuesday, which is preceded by the evening of Chicagohenge, when the sun lines up right between the city’s buildings.

An ABC 7 Chicago camera was located at a perch near Michigan Avenue and Randolph Street, taking a look due west to capture the view of the first sunset following the 2019 Autumnal Equinox.

The view down Randolph Street included the beautiful sunset, Nederlander Theatre, Block Thirty Seven, Ross Dress for Less, and the Cadillac Palace Theatre.

Sunset on Monday September 23, 2019 was 6:46 p.m. CT.

The autumnal equinox was at 2:50 a.m. on September 23 0219. The autumnal equinox is defined as the instant of time when the plane (extended indefinitely in all directions) of Earth’s equator passes through the center of the Sun. This equinox (autumnal and vernal) occurs two times every year — about March 20th and September 23rd.

On the day of the equinox especially, and several days around the equinox, the sun is about exactly east-west at sunrise and sunset, and lines up right between the city’s buildings, along east-west streets. Unfortunately, the blinding sun can also make it more difficult to drive eastbound toward sunrise in the morning, and westbound toward sunset in the evening.

Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, England. The Stonehenge design with a ring of standing stones — each standing stone about 13 feet tall, seven feet wide, and weighing around 25 tons — is considered to have had a celestial observatory function, which may have allowed prediction of eclipse, solstice, equinox and other celestial events.
