Store owner Mike North, 55, had his hands bound and was shot in the back of the head by robbers at about 7:00 p.m. at Norton’s Sweet Shop convenient store.

Chicago Police Department responded to a call of a robbery in progress at the shop, 4759 W. North Ave. at about 7:15 p.m. Witnesses saw three men fleeing the building. When police arrived they found the owner dead in the store.

Norton is survived by his daughter Brittany, 16, who he raised on his own.

In 1991 Norton killed one robber and injured another while they attempted to rob his store. Norton harshly dropped a large cash bundle during the robbery attempt. When the robbers focused their attention on some of the cash that scattered, he shot them. Mike Norton inherited the business from his late father Jim Norton, a Chicago police officer, who ran the store for about 35 years.

Norton was known for helping his tenants and others in the neighborhood, but may been the victim of a revenge crime at the time of his death. He recently evicted gang members for selling drugs out of their apartment. They were tenants in an apartment above the store.

After the eviction, there were verbal threats to Norton’s life, and a random bullet hit a window at the store.
