Winfield police responded about 2:35 p.m. Saturday January 20, 2018 to the Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital campus to a report that a patient was holding a knife to his own throat, and was making demands of hospital staff.

Police from Warrenville and West Chicago police departments, and deputies from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office also responded to assist Winfield police officers.

Police on arrival discovered a 31-year-old male patient in the emergency department at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital armed with a knife. Police officers were able to calm him down, and successfully get him to release the knife.

Police said the man was admitted to the hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

“The coordination of responding law enforcement personnel from all four agencies along with the cooperation of hospital staff allowed the situation to be resolved successfully without injury or the use of force,” according to a press release from Winfield Police Department.

Winfield police Sgt. Joe Grimaldi stated the situation was “resolved peacefully.”

No injuries were reported, but witnesses reported a text alert went out to staff that advised employees to hide and seek shelter.

The incident was resolved by about 3:05 p.m. and an all clear was released, according to witnesses.
