Record Low for High Temperature Broken for January 1 on Monday January 1, 2018

While Chicagoland was hit with -10 to -20-degree temperatures and -35 to -40-degree wind chills, the regular daily warm up to the high temperature for the day was the record breaker. The official afternoon high temperature at O’Hare was only 1°F, which is the coldest high temperature recorded for a January 1 in Chicago dating back to 1871. The previous record — known as the “record low maximum” — was 5°F held since 1969.

Early morning temperatures and dangerous wind chills are forecast to repeat on Tuesday morning January 2, 2017, but lower teens are forecast for mid-afternoon.

Another cold front is forecast for early morning hours Wednesday January 3, 2017, with a band of clouds and scattered light snow and flurries lasting from about midnight Tuesday/Wednesday until 5 a.m. Wednesday, and lingering flurries until about 8 a.m. Wednesday.

The snow showers will continue off Lake Michigan into northwest Indiana Thursday.

The below normal cold weather with temperatures averaging nearly 17 degrees below normal is forecast to continue through Saturday with Sunday finally reaching around the normal of 31°F.
