NFL Network’s MOVE THE STICKS: What to Expect from Jimmy Garoppolo in His First Start with the 49ers; The Move the Sticks crew discusses what to expect from QB Jimmy Garoppolo in his first start with the San Francisco 49ers vs. the Chicago Bears in Week 13 of the 2017 NFL Season.

Arlington Heights native Jimmy Garoppolo today reaches a milestone, progressing from Arlington Cowboys youth football to Rolling Meadows High School quarterback, to Eastern Illinois University quarterback, to New England Patriots quarterback, to his first start with the San Francisco 49ers against his hometown Chicago Bears. Also, along the way, he attended Westgate Elementary School, was a South Middle School Cardinal, and enjoyed spending time at Starbucks on Evergreen Avenue in downtown Arlington Heights.

The Chicago Bears play the San Francisco 49ers today at Soldier Field at 12:00 PM on CBS. Surprisingly, even though Garoppolo was a Bears fan and wore an Urlacher jersey, it’s his first day to step foot inside Soldier Field.

Traded away from the New England Patriots after earning the respect of quarterback Tom Brady, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will start against his childhood hometown team Chicago Bears, playing for the team that was Brady’s childhood favorite — the San Francisco 49ers.

NE Patriots QB Tom Brady on getting his first chance to start for a team that hopes he’ll be its long-term solution at quarterback …

“It’s a great opportunity for Jimmy. We’ve kept in touch and I’ll always wish him the best of luck and I think he’ll do a great job. Niners are lucky to have him.”

— Tom Brady in Boston Globe Dec. 12, 2017

Garoppolo played quarterback for the Eastern Illinois Panthers from 2010 to 2013. In his freshman year, he started eight games, passing for 1,639 yards and 14 touchdowns and earning All-Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer Team honors playing under head coach Bob Spoo.

Garoppolo proceeded to start every remaining game during his time at Eastern Illinois passing for …

2,644 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2011,
3,823 yards and 31 touchdowns in 2012, and
5,050 yards and 53 touchdowns in 2013

His 2013 performance broke the EIU school record for career pass completions previously held by former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.

The New England Patriots drafted Garoppolo in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Garoppolo was the 62nd pick overall.

In his rookie season in 2014, Garoppolo played in 6 games in the regular season, but did not see any game time in the Patriots’ Super Bowl XLIX victory on February 1, 2015.

In 2015, Garoppolo appeared in five games as a relief quarterback.

In 2016 regular season play, Garoppolo was expected to start four games during the Deflategate suspension of Tom Brady, but he was injured with a sprained AC joint in Week 2. In Super Bowl LI, Garoppolo was active for the Patriots’ 34–28 overtime victory over the Atlanta Falcons on February 5, 2017, but he did not play.

In 2017, Garoppolo was traded to the 49ers on October 31 for a second-round draft pick.

When San Francisco 49ers’ starter C.J. Beathard suffered a bruised knee and a strained hip in the 49ers’ game last Sunday November 26, 2017 against the Seattle Seahawks, SF 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan immediately named Garoppolo the starter for today’s game against the Chicago Bears.
