In honor of rock icon Tom Petty’s passing we look back at his Super Bowl 42 Halftime Show in 2008. RIP Tom Petty.

On February 3, 2008 the New York Giants upset the New England Patriots 17-14 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale Arizona at Super Bowl XLII. The Patriots were favored by 12. Super Bowl XLII followed the Bears defeat to the Indianapolis Colts 29-17 in Super Bowl XLI in 2007 at Dolphin Stadium in Miami Gardens when Prince performed the halftime show.

On December 2, 2007, the NFL announced that the halftime entertainment would be provided by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Bridgestone sponsored the halftime show, which was produced by Don Mischer and White Cherry Entertainment in association with NFL Network, and was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2009.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers performed “American Girl”, “I Won’t Back Down”, “Free Fallin'”, and “Runnin’ Down a Dream” which also served as a kick off to their 2008 world tour.
