Facebook Fail: Name a City, Recommended Places, Arlington Heights Sightseeing Needs a Lot of Work

Facebook does some things well, but here is an important example of a major Facebook fail. Let’s just say Google and Google maps does this much better. If you type in a city in the Facebook search box, you will find a result with a collection of photos and table of items: “Recommended Places: Eat, Drink, Sightseeing, Hotels, Shopping”

On the opening page for Arlington Heights, there is a picture of “Palatine Hill” — a photo which depicts a location nobody has ever recognized in the northwest suburbs. If you know where this is in Arlington Heights, or you want to comment about this article, let us know in a Facebook comment on the Facebook post for this article.

The grid of photo results from Facebook on Saturday August 26, 2017 is highly misleading — recommending a visit to Palatine Hill, Northwest Central Dispatch System, Arlington Heights Park District, and The Toy Shop & Motolounge.

After Palatine Hill, Facebook recommends sightseeing at Northwest Central Dispatch System and shows a picture of a tornado/air raid siren. Of course, there are these type of sirens every few square miles all over the United States. We’re not really sure what is so special about this Arlington Heights siren. We do know Northwest Central Dispatch System to be a highly secure 911 dispatch center, which is not really conducive to a drop-in sightseeing tour. But as Facebook recommends, at least it is free to visit. Enter the gate without an invitation and without permission this year and you might get free room and board, but it won’t be in Arlington Heights jail, because Arlington Heights doesn’t have a jail because it’s under construction. Your free room and board might be in Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove Village or Rolling Meadows.

Next, is the only visit they successfully recommend (one out of four on the front page) — Lake Arlington by Arlington Heights Park District. Also free, you can take in the beautiful sights at the Lake Arlington gazebo, like the photo shows.

Finally, there’s the gorgeous back door of The Toy Shop & Motolounge located on Algonquin Road in Arlington Heights, complete with beautiful yellow and black bollards protecting the back door, and a delightful beige overhead door. If you’re lucky, you might see some rust grow on the burglar alarm bell majestically placed above the firefighting standpipe connection.

What’s very surprising is that Facebook has no method to report these photos as misleading, incorrect, or in poor taste. Also, there’s no indication how these photos were chosen, and why they are there.

You can select “more …” and see more locations, but they are equally disappointing — at least for Arlington Heights, anyway. Many images under the sightseeing category are just businesses or government agencies, not sightseeing highlights.
