Arlington Heights Park District Installs Signs Warning of Coyote Sightings

#ad▼

Video from an unknown location that shows the speed involved when a coyote attacks a small dog in 2010. Fortunately for this Chihuahua-wiener dog, a strong and fast Rottweiler came to his rescue and chased the coyote away (The YouTube channel publisher said there had been no coyote sightings in the area).

The Arlington Heights Park District now uses Coyote Sightings signs to increase awareness of coyotes in the area. Coyotes have been active in the area for many years. Occasionally coyotes have been known to attack and kill small dogs in Chicagoland.

Park district signs that say “Attention: Coyote Sightings” are now located at Nickol Knoll Park and near a sand volleyball court just to the north at Creekside Park near Buffalo Creek on Schaefer Road. Both parks are about a half mile south of Lake-Cook Road near the Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve in Lake County.

The signs were installed after a resident spotted a coyote, and called the park district. A sign was previously installed after a coyote was spotted at Raven Park just north of Hintz Road and Arlington Heights Road.

Similar signs have also been used by the Arlington Heights Park District to alert visitors to Lake Arlington about protective red-winged blackbirds, and to increase awareness of the usually harmless Killer Cicada Wasps that prefer to burrow near many sandy baseball diamonds in the summer.

Coyotes are most often reported in four locations in Arlington Heights:

• Near Lake Cook Road and Schaefer Road near Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve

• Near Hintz Road Road on both sides of Arlington Heights Road, and just south of Hintz Road along McDonald Creek, and near St Edna Catholic Church and Camelot Park.

• Near Rolling Green Country Club and Memory Gardens Cemetery along Euclid Avenue and in woods nearby.

• Near Heritage Park and just north of Lowes near Kingsbridge Aboretum, probably in connection with proximity to Busse Woods to the south.
