Austin Police Department released surveillance video at a parking garage when BMW sedan fell 7 stories on Thursday July 13, 2017 at 8:31 a.m.
Austin police and firefighters responded about 8:32 a.m. Thursday July 13, 2017 to report of a car that crashed off an upper floor of a parking garage at 6th Street and Brazos Street and hit the back of an SUV at street level.
This week Austin police released surveillance video showing the crash involving the BMW, the street, and neighboring building, and a Chevy Tahoe.
A BMW was driven through retainer cables and fell 5 stories to street level and hit the back end of a large SUV that was backing up slowly. The sole occupant, a female driver, was injured and remained inside the overturned BMW with injuries that initially appeared to be non-life-threatening.
The driver of the large SUV tried to move forward after hearing the BMW strike the street, but the back end toppled onto the SUV after the front end hit the street.
In September 2016 another vehicle went over the top of the garage, but was suspended near the top of the garage. No other accidents of this severity have occurred, according to GTT — the owner of the garage that was built in 1979.
In the September incident, the small SUV that went over the edge was held by retaining cable at the axle of the vehicle. The male driver was able to climb through the sunroof back into the parking garage.
