RADIO AUDIO: Shots Fired, Chicago Fire Department Engine 126 Hit, Firefighter Grazed by Flying Glass

Chicago police, firefighters and paramedics responded just before 2:30 a.m. Thursday July 27, 2017 to a report of a crash with injuries at 79th Street and South Yates Boulevard.

An argument erupted near Chicago Fire Department Engine 126 between two people involved in the crash. A person involved in the crash allegedly called a man to come to the scene. One man grabbed a handgun from his car and started firing shots into a crowd. Engine 126’s windshield was in the line of fire, and a bullet struck the windshield of the fire engine. One firefighter was grazed by flying glass, and was then checked in the back of an ambulance.

The male suspect who fired the handgun ran into a nearby Subway restaurant. Chicago police were able to quickly apprehend the suspect and recover the handgun.

There are apparent minor injuries involving the firefighter, and not other people were injured.

Charges are pending against the gunman.
